[Fighting Games] Discussion Round 3 - Fight!

edited July 2014 in Games and Technology
Evo is over, please resume your regularly schedule Fighting Game discussions.

What is Evolution 2014?
Evolution (Evo) is the biggest fighting game tournament of the year, the longest running tournament in the fighting game community, and the loudest crowd you’ll probably ever see watching two people play a video game. If you love playing fighting games or watching competitive game playing, you need to set aside some time this weekend and join the hype.

Here’s the Official Website http://evo.shoryuken.com/

Originally known as Battle by the Bay, the event that became Evo started in 1996 in California. At the time only featuring Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2, as the fighting game scene continued to explode through the 90’s the event grew and expanded. In 2002 it was rebranded as Evolution and eventually made its permanent home in Las Vegas.

Why Should I Care?
Many of the best players in the world will be on-stage at Evo and they all know things don’t get any bigger than this. You’ll see not only the highest level of play, but also drama, heartbreak, adrenaline, rage and the pure unadulterated joy of showing you’re the absolute best at something you love to do.

Evo is a place where some of the biggest and most iconic moments in fighting game history happen, the most notable being Justin Wong vs. Daigo Umehara in Street Fighter 3 during the 2004 tournament:
http://youtu.be/xSGW7CwD5GM

It’s not all in the past though, here’s some of the best moments from 2011:
http://youtu.be/s-hIDjh98Po

The hypest moments from 2012
http://youtu.be/wZTWXaLD274

And, of course, last year's highlights:

Who is Going to Be There?
About 5,700 players spread across 8 different games – with the biggest draws being for the latest version of Capcom's venerable Street Fighter series, Ultra Street Fighter 4. Other games at Evo include Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Smash Brothers Melee, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters 13, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and Injustice.

Where Can I See It?
If you’re going to be in Vegas this weekend, stop by the Westgate Hotel and Casino. For the rest of us scrubs, catch all the action on the official Twitch TV livestream:

Stream 1

When Does Everything Take Place?
Festivities start bright and early at 8 AM this Friday, July 11. Matches continue all through the weekend, ending Sunday night (usually late Sunday night).
Here’s the current stream schedule for the Main Stage, which is also going to be shown on IGN:

What a shame. No Virtua Fighter matches.

Divekick is on Saturday, 9 PM on Stream 2 :)

And as much as I love Virtua Fighter, you aren't going to see it anywhere outside of Japan and SEGA sponsored tournaments.
Fighting Fact: Fuudo the Japanese player who dominated SSIV:AE at EVO 2011 is mainly a Virtua Fighter player.

I know, I'm a Lion player (I kinda suck) so I have watched videos of Fuudo and Chibita for a while. I really thought Fuudo could win that tournament. He is the only one I've seen beat Homestay Akira. That guy is a beast.

    Some Updates:

    - The stream of Skullgirls on Saturday will be the Top 8. Winner not only gets $1,400 out of the prize pot, but supposedly will also have their likeness or a character of their design included in the background of a stage of the game in a future update. Pretty cool.

    - NRS has teased a new DLC character reveal for Injustice at EVO.

    - Yoshinori Ono is reported to appear at the 6:30 special presentation slot on Sunday. It's extremely likely they'll at least give a short preview of what to expect with the new 2013 SSFIV update. One of his tweets insinuates the update may be branded as Champion Edition. Will it be just a balance update or will we see new characters?

    - Here are the special panels for the event:
All Panels located in Palace room 1-5

    Friday:
    12pm Indie Game Developers
    2pm Meet the Skullgirls Team
    5pm Maximilian's 'Assist Me Season 3' & The Online Q&A

    Saturday:
10am Rebooting Killer Instinct as a Modern Fighting Game
    12pm Street Fighter Nation
Mad Catz: For the community, by the community!

Fighting Fact: Whenever you watch UMVC3 and you see a player caught in one of Zero's lighting loops, this is what's happening on-stage:

Evo stream one has been running old videos, things from B3 through B5(Battle By the By, the tournament series before Evolution) through stuff from last year's Evo. You've got combo and glitch videos by NKI, Mav, JamesChen, and more, B5 DVD matches, Past Evo matches, player interviews, movies like that Balrog movie that premiered at Evo, etc.

Pretty cool stream all day on Monday. Based on how Wizard and Pond3r were talking in the chat it sounds like this will run until Thursday or Friday when it will be replaced by stuff from this year.

Nintendo's lawyers just hit EVO with a wake-up Ultra combo. No streaming Smash at all.

Here's a statement from the Smash boards:

It's with a very heavy heart that I must report some bad news. I'm sure you're all aware that Nintendo is tightening it's policies around uses of it's IP by 3rd parties. We have just been informed by their legal department that we do not have permission to stream SSBM. We will, of course, honor both the letter and the intent of their request. All broadcasts of SSBM, both official and unofficial, will be forbidden at Evo 2013. Though I understand everyone is disappointed, please do not setup bootleg SSBM streams on your phones. Doing so would put the entire tournament in jeopardy. Anyone at Evo who broadcasts SSBM will be immediately disqualified from the tournament, their passes will be revoked, and you will be asked to leave the premises. You are, of course, free to take whatever pictures or videos you like for your own personal enjoyment at the event.

Since it cannot be broadcast, we will be moving the SSBM finals to Saturday immediately following the Semi Finals (est: 2:00 PM).

You guys worked very hard to get to Evo, and you should be proud of what you've done for your community and the millions of victims of Breast Cancer around the world. Even though there will be no stream, we think Smash is going to be one of the highlights of Evo this year, and we're proud to have you guys be a part of it!

lol, had to look up the Press Turn System to get that joke.

In retrospect, this really isn't all that surprising. Smash was consistently one of the bigger draws at MLG events, but Nintendo absolutely refused to ever let them stream any of the matches, so MLG eventually decided to just drop the Smash games. Then, of course, there's the more recent brouhaha of Nintendo shutting down Let's Play and Speed-Run videos.

It's pretty funny considering how much in a uproar the community was earlier in the week making insinuations about Warner Bros. and Microsoft sending moneyhats to Evo in order to promote their games more on the streams. If a company is going to take a heavy-handed approach to how their games are appropriated in these type of major events, I'm willing to bet that the community is going to be way more accepting of secret handshakes than iron fists.

  • MetalMagusMetalMagus Too Serious Registered User regular
Hold on to your butts, Nintendo just reversed course. The Smash stream is still on. I've re-updated the stream schedule to the original.

Sounds like the marketing and the legal teams at Nintendo don't share an office.

Gamespot's article on Evo reports that out of 6,097 registered tournament entries, there are 3,538 individual players. It's the largest EVO to date and also the most entries in competitive gaming / eSports history.

Don't forget that Pools start bright and early 8 AM Pacific Time - 12 noon Eastern Time.

Any guesses / predictions for winners?

After the run Infiltration made last year, he's the clear favorite in AE. If he doesn't get randomed out and makes it to Winners' Finals, I'm betting he takes it all.

Pretty same with Chris G and Mahvel. Though, Marvel is much more prone to surprise upsets and Chris G tends to flake out if things aren't going well. I'm sure he'll make it Grand Finals this year, but it might be through loser's finals.

I don't think KoF will be as hype as last year, but I hope I'm wrong. We'll probably see some crazy things coming out of the Smash tournament.

Just watched the MK final. A Cyrax player won after tearing through a parade of cheap ass Kabals. The final round was pretty tense, though.

Couldn't help but notice turnout was piss poor. Tons of empty seats. Wouldn't be surprised if MK9 isn't at Evo next year.

Come on...implying Cyrax isn't stupid himself in that horrible, garbage game. Numbers wise MK was the lowest of any game. Even anime managed to beat it, and anime never gets good turnouts for Evo. KoF dropped off too; they should've given away Mai in some form again.

Keep this in mind for tomorrow too. I'm not sure how much these numbers have changed or if any others have been posted, but if your game(s) got shit for stream time outside of top 8 check this list. Likewise with donation money; MK deserved zero stream time just like Tekken due to turnout, but NRS donated fat stacks to get Injustice into the tournament and MK an entire stream. It's pretty easy to see why the schedule was setup the way it was to maximize stream time for the top four games. At least the Evo staff did their best to help out all the side streamers get room to setup. Sadly the Tekken stream was ass every time I tried to watch it, but top 8 was solid with old man Bronson getting things done for such a long time. Mando got a nice ST stream going, so that's cool. Persona was a waste of time like it always is; both Persona and BB just wish they were GG, a game better for both playing and spectating.

Early entrance numbers for EVO 2013 by game

    1. SSF4 AE v2012 - 1,601 players
    2. UMvC3 - 1,297 players
    3. Smash - 696 players
    4. Injustice - 582 players
    5. SFxT - 545 players
    6. KoF13 - 433 players
    7. P4A - 400 players
    8. TTT2 - 355 players
    9. MK9 - 233 players

I'm not much of a Tekken guy but if you like watching and/or playing Tekken even in the slightest, or are just familiar in the slightest with who NIN and Bronson are, then it's worth finding and watching. Bronson should have never won that fight even if he has stepped his practice regime up from posting pictures of steak dinners on twitter to actually playing the game again.

I'm bummed they didn't have time for the team tournament. As exciting as SF4 was, probably the best Evo matches that game's had since it came out, I bet some of that would have carried over.

Like Wizard said though, trying to run a tournament this big with nine games means all the bonus, fun stuff is even more of an afterthought. It seemed like every tourney was running pretty smoothly and they still fell behind schedule by two hours give or take.

Be interesting to see if anyone other than Chris G can beat Chris G today. As much as he's whined about Evo being his own worst enemy like usual is likely even worse today. I would've bet on F.Champ being the one to beat ChrisG this year with his Dormammu but with Champ refusing to play it in tournaments you saw the results when he finally pulled it out the one time, then spending the past month or so trolling instead of playing outside the FGTV house, and not able to win anything like he should even when trolling with Phoenix, I'm curious if he'll even get top eight.

Pool play is as fun as always so far. Two Ghost Riders in a row and a guy with a custom keyboard style stick; haven't seen one of those since the hitbox got popular.

  • ColumnColumn Registered User regular
I'm all about longer sets regardless of game. I love that Marvel switched to 3/5 everywhere but Evo...but come on, way to shit on the guys who drew early pools. Tell people it's going to be 2/3 no exceptions since Evo announcements then change it in the middle of the tournament?

  • BigJoeMBigJoeM Registered User regular
Yeah that is complete bullshit and anyone that got put into losers before that change is justified in being mad salty.

That's sad. The SC5 tourney is dealing with the same issues Tekken had yesterday. Stream has periods of no lag, then gets lag and/or low FPS. Everybody fighting for venue internet and 4G.

Here's a link to the ST stream. Stream was smooth all day yesterday, and what little I've turned off and on for today has been solid too. They're doing 3v3 teams at the moment. The ratio tourney was yesterday.

For the potential lurkers, if Smash is your thing I hope you've been watching it as much as possible. There's been some upsets, some low tier play, and clutch matches. A lot of energy around the stations yesterday, even more today. I wish I could get into it since Marvel pools have been okay but not great, but Smash may be the most boring game in the world to spectate. I'll never understand how they raised enough money to get to Evo. But they did, and if you can get into it, this is a tournament you need to watch.

I know the MvC scene is all about hype and kind of pretend beefs and stuff, but his antics at curleh mustache (when in front of infrit he called him a "washed up motherfucker") just made me feel like he's trying to pretend he's actually a person people give a shit about.

I know it's controversial when you come into a video game thread and purport that "video games are dumb". I LOVE Marvel and genuinely do follow it, but there's a level of egotism that I just can't really abide and Champ definitely crossed that line.

Even for the people that disagree I think it's a fair criticism. I'll never get the heel bullshit; this isn't wrestling and it will never be wrestling. Fake drama is always dumb, whether you know it's fake before it's confirmed fake (Mike Ross and Jago) or people like FChamp that pretend to be this colossal dick when they really aren't. You just cringe watching them try to keep up the facade.

That's why I'll take Marn over every other wannabe shit talker, heel, troll, whatever. Marn deserves every ounce of shit he gets, he knows it, and he fucking feeds off of it like a demon. If you need drama and personality you know it's real and will always be there as long as Marn's around. And because none of it's forced you get beautiful things like the Marna nd Champ gif in this thread.

If you don't want drama and personality I think there's an argument for that too. It makes things pretty bland and boring, and people constantly believe the Japanese players aren't the colossal shit talkers a lot of them are just because so few of them speak English, but I get the argument you should just shut your mouth, play your game, and move on even if it's too extreme in the other direction.

Also love the user and sig pics; never found football fun to watch unless I'm at a stadium where I can get into it a bit, but thanks to that show I've actually looked forward to football season the past few years.

I'm fine with personalities. I like that some people love Yipes and some people think he's a clown. There's an inherent competitive spirit and I'm totally fine with that. When Champ wiped the floor with Infrit I was like "oh shit dude just made a huge statement". And he did.

Then he ACTUALLY made a statement.

And it was just stupid and made it look like it was an act. They aren't GOOD actors. He and Yipes commentating and taking shots at each other was a mess.

This is a larger discussion, and I know that we're never going to be in a world where EVO is on tv or anything, but if these people want to be taken seriously in any capacity shit like that hurts their chances of being looked at like anything other than children.

Your even better argument there is see donation drives to get twenty somethings to the very tournament we're watching and talking about. You have a year to plan your finances accordingly. If that's not enough time playing games in one of the most expensive cities in the world that is also built on money stealing vices is not your largest concern.

As for the tourney itself, for all you people out there that enjoy smash you need to be watching this tournament. The amount of yelling and chanting coming from the smash stations makes we wish I could get the hell into watching it.

So, the Street Fighter panel just announced that the next update is going to be pretty big.

    Rebalance for all existing characters
Hugo, Poison, Elena, and Rolento added
1 new character making their debut in a Street Fighter game, to be revealed later (SDCC?)
    6(!) new stages
    All existing DLC is included
Pre-orders get Udon designed costumes for the newcomers

Name and trailer will debut before SFIV grand finals tomorrow night
$15 for digital version, $40 for disc
    Release date early 2014

  • BigJoeMBigJoeM Registered User regular
I will laugh if those 6 stages are from SFxT and the fifth character is Asura.

Might pick this up if i can use the $15 update on a new copy of AE.

  • MetalMagusMetalMagus Too Serious Registered User regular
Upgrade path appears to be $15 will upgrade AE. You'll need the $40 version to upgrade straight from SSFIV. You could buy the digital AE version and then the $15 new update to save $10, but the $40 version has all the DLC outfits.

This blog just posted pics from the panel, includes character art for the SFxT characters and concept art of their Udon costumes.
