Well, I heard ADV has released Yotsuba& 4 in July, but I forgotten about it or haven't seen it. Does anyone know if this means ADV Manga is back on track with thier other series or is this just going to be a one shot deal?

I dunno, but I have a question about manga: why is it so damn expensive? I was going to get one for a roadtrip, but those things are $8-10 each! Call me crazy but that's too much for one little book that I'll finish in an hour of casual reading. I wound up getting a trade paperback of Philip K. Dick short stories for about the price of 2 manga books (also: why can I not find The Man in the High Castle in a normal paperback? $12-15 for the trade paperback is more than I really want to pay for a short novel).

Well, its because I assume, of translations, the price of the licence and other factors included. For the price of one of my novels (Hardback, historical/alternative historical/dinosaurs) I can get 2 or 3 Manga for the price of my book. I think its about what you can afford and stuff. I pick up the novel and the manag anyway so it matters not to me. I think the price is quite right because of the work involved.

All they need to do is translate it which has got to be far less work than actually writing/drawing the manga to begin with and from what I've heard manga is dirt cheap in Japan.

Don't they also need to change every page so it reads left to right instead of the original right to left?

    Well for my understanding is:

    1) They need to pay a licence fee for the product which they intend to get
    2) They need to get the orginals (or semi-orginals) to translate
    3) They need to get a good translater and translate everything accordly and properly. (For example "Kore wa Mizu Desu ka" is translated to "This water is?" which means that the translation would need to be translated as well).
    4) They need to print and draw the english works in the bubbles provided
    5) *Optional step* Censoring parts (ala CMX)
    6) Designing the cover page page which is different than the Japanese ones
    7) Sending it/Publishing it to the proper format, right to left
    8) Error checking it the final time
    9) Packaging it and sending it out

All these steps require that people be involved, artists, translaters, publishers and probably are more than one since manga publishers here might have many titles in the works. Also the price of shipping it to the destination and such also increase the price. Thus the price increases.

Of course, it will be cheaper in Japan because they don't need translaters, the artists and thier workers drawn, ink and do the title for themselves and then send it out to the publishers who only look at it, either make changes or publish it. Most of the work is done by the artist/writer themselves. Plus I don't think they get paid for every day, just when their books are selling. Hence the idea that they aren't well off (I might be wrong on this, but correct me).

Anyone a fan of Goodbye, Mr. Despair (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)? I'm liking it so far. I know not many are harem fans here, but this has a tiny bit different spin on it, in the same sense that Elfen Lied is a harem anime. Not in the bloody guts way, since this is more of a slice-of-life- ish comedy, but um. The main character constantly attempts suicide.

Yes, yes, a million times yes. Best comedy this side of Azumanga, and the only anime comedy I can think of off hand that appealed to my long-neglected sense of dark humour. Chiri and Kafuuka gained huge potential for character development in the last subbed episode, too (the bathouse one). It's also got the best OP (and to a very slightly lesser extent, ED), both in terms of music and animation, this season by far.

It saddens me though that exactly one person's subbing it, and it seems incredibly unlikely to get licensed.

It seems like AFK was the only group subbing it and I think they said they're going to drop the project because the translator didn't want to do this and Lucky Star at the same time. :(

Anyone know what the deal is the Gurren-Lagann subbing situation? I remember like 4 groups were subbing this when it started and now nothing since episode 13. I've been watching it from the speedsubs that some members of 4chan are putting up but I'm wondering why none of the big guys are into this project. Is it because it licensed?

edit: Dennou Coil was definitely the pleasant surprise of the season. A very original show and the world is this offhand mixture of extradinary and mundane that is incredibally Miyazaki-esque.

This is what gets me. Manga gained popularity as a cheap thing to read on the train during a commute. Over here it's a niche product so I guess they can charge more.

I might get into it for $4-5 per volume. Some series have scores of volumes, so getting an entire series is a big investment.

No, because Manga here is formatted differently.

Manga in Japan, an I have a copy to prove it, is in maganize form. Its a collection of different Chapters (ala Chapter 1) of different series. For example, I might find (example, remember) Claymore Chapter 1, Azumangah Daoiah Chapter 20 and so on in one maganize. So picking one up in Japan from anywhere from 300 to 900 yen ($3 - $9 roughly) is cheap.

Here they sell tankoban which means, book form which is basically all the chapters collected from the maganizes and publishes it in that format so you don't have to look at various backissues to see the whole story.

If you want the magazine form, then Shonen Jump, Shonen Jump Advance or Shojo Beat is one series of Magazines you can pick up. I don't sure about the prices for this so have a look yourself. The most common one is book form which is the primary selling source here.

If you can read Japanese picking up backissue from used bookstores in Japan is cheaper, if not, you have to buy the takoban's.

Also I forgot to mention, that the manga magazines carry Manga chapters, but also have other articles and are in essense proper magazines. They sometimes give free ones at corners of streets (along with paper towels) to passbyers to bring readership in. The one I got is appearently a historical magazine since most of the stories are historically based. I have begun translating a bit of them, but since there is Kanji I am stuck as I haven't learnt Kanji yet.

Oh, and I picked up Yotsuba& 4. So hopefully ADV Manga is started agian.

I'm not exactly sure what your trying to say as you can buy volumes of manga in Japan as well. They normally sell for about 1/2 the cost of what you could buy one for here and if you buy used its way way cheaper.

Lets have everyone put aside their differences (destroying any potential of conflict between Kittan and Rossiu), and lets have Simon own the Anti-spiral forces in the blink of an eye, turn GL into Arc-GL which is some superbadass, own the fucking moon, saving mankind, and.. oh what the fuck, lets have Simon turn the fucking moon into some other superbadass spaceship (everything he touches transforms into a spaceship?). All without breaking a sweat, and with no prior knowledge or planning of anything. Simon was having trouble fighting a goddamned Mugen a couple episodes back. Now he's single-handedly won the huge space battle in a single episode. Did we miss anything?

I fully expect Simon to destroy several planets in the next episode.

Yes, that is called Takoban. Collected chapters of a series. As I explained to you before, there are multiple steps that determine the cost. The cost of translating, licence and paychecks increase the price. Companies have to have that to make a bit of profit so they can aquire more licences so they don't stop publishing.

err... lucky star is kinda slice of life... ish.

    right?

    assume you've seen it though...

I honestly don't know what to think about Lucky Star. The first few episodes were terrible, but then it shaped up, turned into a weekly Haruhi commercial, then a bunch of otaku meta-humour that I didn't understand at all, then a yuri show, then it became really disconcerting because at that point the show knew it was popular enough to generate porn and catered to that audience. I think it's a bit settled down now and is really more of a slice-of-life thing.
I'm torn between liking it and thinking it's pandering fluff. It's apparently super popular and whatever weird energy it had actually kept me watching even though I first thought it was horrible. I think what's kept me around is that the show is the most unstable thing ever and I'm morbidly curious as to what the studio is going to do with it.

you just need to learn to love pandering fluff.

I don't hate any of the characters, and that really helps a lot with my opinion of an anime.

I also read American/European comics and the switch from right->left to left->right or vice versa is confusing, especially after reading one format for a while.

I don't think very many companies flip their books anymore due to the extra cost in doing so, though it used to be common practice. I have some old Viz manga that are flipped and it's weird to see breast pockets on the wrong side and everyone is left handed (though everyone was driving on the right side of the road, which was great). I think TokyoPop was the first to do it on a large scale, and while they're 100% authentic manga thing was a gimmick and not accurate, it sure was nice.

Dark Horse is, I think, the only publisher to still "flip" one of their books, and even then it's not really flipping. For Blade of the Immortal they cut and paste and reconstruct the panels to flow left->right, as well as getting Samura to redraw some panels. Most likely this is because Blade of the Immortal is also released in a standard monthly comic pamphlet format in addition to being by volume. It's nice because you get more real estate to admire Samura's work.

The wiki is pretty unhelpful, actually.
I don't have any books with me, so this is from the Dark Horse site:
    1) Blood of a Thousand
    2) Cry of the Worm
    3) Dreamsong
    4) On Silent Wings I
    5) On Silent Wings II
    6) Dark Shadows
    7) Heart of Darkness
    8) The Gathering
    9) The Gathering II

By this point someone at Dark Horse realized the mistake of not numbering the volumes, so 10 and up are numbered on the spine. The lack of numeric volumes is usually not a problem for their other books since most comic book trade paperbacks are meant to be read in arcs wholly divorced from other storylines. Believe me it was a pain not knowing which one to read first because I only buy manga a few months at a time. The slooooow release schedule made me forget about this series until I saw it in a book or comic store, at which point I didn't know if it was the next one I should read or if I missed an entire volume. The numbered volumes were a godsend.

Japanese manga use a different paper grade than american, too. Also the books are usually smaller in size and amount of comics per volume.

    Ugh.
Looking at the prices for Dark Horse's books just reminded me how expensive this hobby used to be. $15 for one volume no matter how badly done, so I view the current $10 per volume as pretty cheap in comparison. Blade of the Immortal is, funnily enough, one of the few titles that have actually gone UP in price to $17 a volume. The quality in translation, fidelity, paper, and the work itself may actually be worth it though.

I'm not exactly sure what your trying to say as you can buy volumes of manga in Japan as well. They normally sell for about 1/2 the cost of what you could buy one for here and if you buy used its way way cheaper.

Yes, that is called Takoban. Collected chapters of a series. As I explained to you before, there are multiple steps that determine the cost. The cost of translating, licence and paychecks increase the price. Companies have to have that to make a bit of profit so they can aquire more licences so they don't stop publishing.

Dude. It's practically the same way here (Semantics aside, of course Japanese Volumes are going to vary in size, etc.). Different series are published in newsprint-style magazines, and then slapped into volumes for those who want to collect only a specific series/those who've missed the original prints.

Difference being is that over here, a ton of series have been published straight into Volume form because... Well, it just came out here first that way. It wasn't until a few years ago that mags like Shonen Jump and (now defunct) Raijin Comics brought that format over. That, and, well, many of the series brought over have already finished their runs, and with the Serial format all but relegated to a few experimental magazines, it's easier to simlpy just release them as Volumes.

Even Shonen Jump series published monthly here are a little behind the Volume releases. It's just the way things are here. Many of these series are months, if not years behind their Japanese releases, so the timing of Volume/Monthly issue deals is incredibly erratic for series that are published on such magazines.

For those that ARE caught up? Good lord. Battle Angel Alita: Last Order for instance. Volume 10 just came out in Japan, and it continues to run in Business Jump, I believe. America isn't getting volume 9 until sometime in September. The US run "Caught up" with Volume 8, with Volume 9 due out in Japan in only a matter of months. Instead of trying to be as caught up as possible, Volume 9 was pushed back almost an entire year, with Volume 10 most likely not coming out until mid-2008 at least.

Unless publishers put forth the extraordinary effort to bring every last serial magazine out here and keep everything constantly up to date and translated with only a couple weeks' worth of delay..

Wait. What was I talking about again?

Oh, right. No difference except for the fact that Volumes are the preferred format here because they came out in the US before serial publication, which was Japan's original format. It's like say, buying those big Calvin & Hobbes and Penny Arcade compilations.

Japanese manga use a different paper grade than american, too. Also the books are usually smaller in size and amount of comics per volume.

I don't know about the paper grade, but I do know that the amount of chapters is exactly the same in every single manga I've looked at or read. The number of chapters in a volume is set by the publisher when the Japanese volume is first released and then copied by the American publisher. Obviously this is anecdotal evidence, but thats my experience.

I think you're right, khain. I'm just remembering how things used to be. And about paper grade, magazines are newspaper quality, but collected volumes may be different. The one's I've bought are usually inbetween newspaper and normal paper.

I feel the same way. I've been avoiding it because, hey, giant robots, but the way people go on and on about it I'll have to check it out at some point.

And something about a heroic rock?

    My point still stands.
Simon shockwaves half the enemies, one shots the moon, and just about everything else. I just want them to work for their victories. I want there to be conflict. I hate it when the good guys are overpowered.
It's just to make up for the lack of over-the-top fuckawesomeness of episodes 17-21

    Also he broke space-time.

Funnily, I just sort of completely stopped giving a shit about it around episode 16 or so. The power creep was painful then, and has apparently only gotten even more stupid, and evidently 16 episodes is the most I can consume of "if you believe in yourself, your mech powers up and then you win" shoved down my throat. I can often stomach it for mystic handwavey magical powers, but magical robots... not so much. My suspension of disbelief wears out around the time that willpower is considered fuel for your giant mechanoman.

In truth many viewers seemingly are just waiting for Simon to become the guy seen in the beginning of the first episode.

Because holy shit that's awesome goddamn.
