On the vampire stuff, the visual representation of the lady possessing the body is really strange and confusing. I feel like there is too little exaggeration going on there, because I just sort of thought she was getting slung over his shoulder or something of the sort. In context you know that that is what must be happening, but without a proper read through there's nothing really helping me understand whats happening there. I feel like that's a missed opportunity to something a little less ridged and go for something that's really visually interesting.

Thanks. That wasn't in the script, it just said "she possesses the medical examiner," so that's what I came up with to represent that. I was trying to do something cool-looking that I'd never seen before. What would you suggest I do?

By the way, I notice I didn't post the final page of the vampire pitch. It's here:

That Final page is pretty cool. I guess I would just be interested in seeing you "play" more. Her wrapping around the dude is a good idea, but visually I don't think you are selling it. The top panel of that page has a lot of motion and stretching, and you gave the moment a lot of good breathing room. In that possession panel, You could push that taffy effect in that to really emphasize it, maybe get some strands coming off of her, or her arm going in an different direction to make another loop.

When I'm looking at a comic, its panels like the one of the dude getting sucked into the ground that tend to grab me. I realize that you have a bit more of a slice of life comic going on with The Sundays, but I feel like you tend to hold back even on some of your supernatural comics. This falls in line with my personal aesthetics when it comes to comics, though, as I like highly visual and experimental things.

Its a biased crit, but I figured it may be a useful thought anyway. Some slightly more crazy/interesting/unique panels would probably benefit you, when it comes to getting your work out there. That's the kind of thing that looks good by itself on tumblr and tells a little of the story all on its own. I would just consider pushing yourself into more experimental directions, but how that actually translates into your work would be up to who/what influences you.

Thanks, I'm aware of it myself, because I consciously try to push myself to do something I haven't done before on every page, or at least work outside of my comfort zone on something. The warping effect of the woman around the medical examiner took me weeks of roughs, drawing, erasing, re-drawing, and tweaking until I got something I was comfortable with. It was definitely one of the most difficult panels I've ever drawn but I'm happy with how it came out.

There are more "possession" panels in the three-issue miniseries, so if it gets picked up by a publisher I'll try and push myself even further with those shots.

    Page 12 roughs:

    the_sundays__3_page_12_roughs_by_scottewen-d666mh7.jpg
    PAGE TWELVE

    Panel One
RICHARD and CHERNOSE are in the club. It’s dark, full of people, painfully loud music.
RICHARD : So where’s the DJ?
    CHERNOSE: Dude in the sunglasses.

    Panel Two
    RICHARD looks annoyed.
RICHARD : That guy? He doesn’t even have turntables!
    CHERNOSE: So?
RICHARD : Well what’s that about? We waited in line for half an hour and paid ten bucks to listen to some guy hit play on his iTunes playlist?

    Panel Three
CHERNOSE spots an incredibly attractive black girl in hotpants and a bikini top. He is putting a sticker on her as RICHARD talks.
CHERNOSE: Yeah, sure. Hey little lady. You just won Chernose’s star prize!
RICHARD : I mean how does he scratch? Is he going to wiggle the mouse about?

    Panel Four
CHERNOSE puts the sticker on her top.
GIRL (Reading): Fittest girl in the club? That’s funny.
CHERNOSE: And you know that! Want to dance?
    GIRL: Sure!

    Panel Five
RICHARD walks over to the “DJ”, we can see Chernose grinding against her ass in the background.

    Panel Six
She has pushed CHERNOSE away and is shouting at him. RICHARD in the foreground has made it up to the DJ.
RICHARD : You really should be ashamed of this
    DJ: Sorry, Grandad. No requests.

    Panel Seven
Again in the background we can see the girl throwing a drink in Chernose’s face. Chernose has his hands up in defense.
RICHARD : I mean I’d feel bad. Do you feel bad?
    DJ: I’m sorry?
RICHARD : Well at least you’re sorry.

Colors in progress. There are a ton of layers on this page because I'm separating everything by foreground, middle ground, and background colors. So this is going to take me a lot longer than most pages, I think. Does this look work?

It looks a lot more coherent so far. If colors are not you main concern, you could really get away with something as simple as this, too. I don't know how much further you plan to take it, but you could work pretty well under some restrictions, doing some monotone panels, and having very limited pallets.

Thanks. I'm so relieved that I'm starting to get the hang of colors (at least, starting to understand why what I was doing before wasn't working).

The previous image was just a work-in-progress. I did the pinks and purples first to separate the different foreground, middleground, and background aspects of each panel; and then converted it to grayscale and adjusted the saturation of each layer to maximize the contrast. Each of those pink or purple layers is an overlay, with the normal colors on a layer underneath it.

    Here's some more progress:

    PAGE THIRTEEN

    Panel One
The girl who’s party it is is standing up. She’s the fifth element girl. For the script’s sake let’s call her AMBER. People are wandering over and sitting round in a circle. STU is walking up.
AMBER: Okay everyone gather round. We’re playing a drinking game. It’s called ‘I have never’. We go around and everyone has to say something they’ve never done and then you drink if you have done that thing.
LAURA: Are you allowed to lie about the thing you’ve never done?
    AMBER: Of course!

    Panel Two
Everyone has gathered round. All the kid characters are there except Cool Tommy B, Edward and Rupert. They are mostly drinking with glasses from the large pitcher in the middle.
GIRL: Okay, I’ll start as it’s my party. I have never... drunk alcohol. Okay? So everyone drinks.

    Panel Three
MARY: Okay so I could say like... I have never had sex?

    Panel Four
Most people drink. Stu and Sarah don’t and look at each other.

    Panel Five
LAURA and VORENICA laughing and Stu.
LAURA: Yeah, we knew YOU wouldn’t be drinking, Stu.
VORENICA: Ha. Of course not. Virgin!

    Panel Six
LAURA: Okay... I have never had sex... in the last week!
GIRL: Oh god, I’d better drink.
    LAURA: Me too!

    Panel Seven
LAURA and ROB are both drinking and smiling at each other. STU looks bored. TEDDY and MARY are drinking.
AMBER: Oh my God! Laura and Rob! Are you guys back together?
VOICE (off): Okay, so whose turn is it now?

    PAGE FOURTEEN

    Panel One
CHERNOSE is standing at the table RICHARD is sat at, grinning. RICHARD looks depressed.
CHERNOSE: Come on, Richard. I’ve already pulled three girls! You need to get out there.
RICHARD: I didn’t realise it was a competition.

    Panel Two
CHERNOSE still stands. RICHARD reaches up trying to take the stickers off him.
CHERNOSE: Really? I thought I’d made that clear. Aight, I’ll spot you three points.
RICHARD: Jesus, alright. Well give me one of those stickers.

    Panel Three
CHERNOSE sits giving RICHARD some of the stickers. RICHARD still sat, looks at the stickers, still looking sad.
CHERNOSE: Aight, now you’re talking. So just go up to some fly honey and slap one of these on her tits.
RICHARD: Seriously? That’s how you’re talking now? I’m not sure I like this my-soggeny.

    Panel Four
RICHARD is pointing and laughing in CHERNOSE’s face.
CHERNOSE: It’s pronounced misogyny, Richard. Also it was ****ing steeped in irony so get over it.
RICHARD: I was totally ****ing with you! It was ME who was the ironic one!
    CHERNOSE: How ironic.

    Panel Five
RICHARD is standing and slapping a sticker on a brunette girl. She is wearing a wedding veil and an L plate (Learning plate from a car)
RICHARD: Hey sugarpop! Have one of these.
GIRL (Reading it): I’m one of the fattest girls in the club?

    Panel Six
The GIRL slaps Richard hard in the face.
    GIRL: Prick!

    Panel Seven
RICHARD sits back down, his hand on his face where he was slapped.
CHERNOSE: Ha! I’ll give you half a point cause that was funny.
RICHARD: Well... at least I’m winning.

No, I can. I've been doing them for eleven weeks now, and posting them on my deviantART, it's just that the illustrations are supposed to be simple and childlike so I never really ask for critiques on them. It's for an orthodox Jewish magazine called Ami... they have a children's section called Aim. I've been lettering a weekly comic strip in that section for about a year and a half now, and a few months back they offered me some illustration work. The feature is a family of four kids from age 5 to age 19 writing diary entries, and I illustrate the entries in the style of the four children.

    Some recent examples:

Even without really having the full context behind them, the magazine illustrations are kinda neat. Having a bunch of little glimpses in different styles for the different people is cool.

Here's the cover for Corktown. We're almost at a point where we can start pitching it. Dave Ganjamie is doing the colors for the cover (he colored the other pages as well), however, when I was drawing the cover I had a specific idea in mind for how the colors should look. Rather than try to explain it to him I did a mock-up and sent him the PSD so he could just use my flats and change around what he wanted to. Here's the progression:

Looks awesome! Only thing that jumped out at me was that it looks like the gun is too high up, as if she's just cupping the bottom of the clip. Looked at it for a few more seconds before I realised the thumb on her right hand isn't coming around the grip, which would help a lot.

Hey guys. I've been busy the last few weeks as I got hired to ink a comic book and haven't had time to work on anything else, really.

But I wanted to update this thread with what will probably be the last page of The Sundays.

I only had time to color the first panel because I have pages to ink. I started up an Indiegogo campaign to help raise money so I can complete this issue, but there's only 5 days left and we still have $700 to raise, so it's doubtful we'll reach the budget. Oh well, you guys helped me out a ton with this issue and I don't think I could have improved as much as I did over the course of the last four years if it hadn't been for this forum and Penciljack as well.

If you want to help out, here's the Indiegogo campaign, but don't sweat it if you can't. I'm not posting here looking for donations.

Thanks, I will continue to post stuff here, I just need something to work on. The vampire comic I posted earlier ("Corktown") is currently being pitched to some comic book companies, and if no one picks it up we're going to put it up on Kickstarter. So hopefully I'll have those to post someday.

The inking job is for a comic called "The Hardway." It's being penciled by someone I went to the Kubert School with, named Don Kunkel. It's a book about high school wrestling. I don't think I can post finished pages yet but I took some photos of individual panels a few days ago to compare the pencils to the finished inks.

Seems like you deserve a penciling credit as well, considering how much you've improved/changed/fixed from the originals. The originals seems more like storyboards or layouts than finished pencils (at least to my eyes, but I'm no comic book professional.)
