Darn, didn't get to watch Big Trouble in Little China tonight. Instead, watched Cabin in the Woods.

Why didn't I see that movie sooner? What other pleasures in life have I been missing out on?

    Tucker and Dale vs Evil
And another thing, Escape From New York is an excellent movie.

I forgot about that until I saw it on TV the other night. Then I felt shame. Deep, deep shame.

It's always fun rewatching these old action movies and seeing how much slower their pacing is and how they don't really have that many big action scenes compared to modern action movies.

Halfway through a screening, Kenpachiro Satsuma, who played Godzilla from 1985-1995, walked out, saying "It's not Godzilla. It doesn't have the spirit."

What's that about because I don't think they've even finished shooting the new Godzilla

    Godzilla 98
Roland Emmerich admitted that he did not like the original Godzilla movies - he only agreed to the project after being promised to be able to do what ever he wanted with the series.

and he ended up doing a fairly typical action movie thing that ripped off jurassic park a lot

if only his whims had been different, we might have gotten a surreal, avant-garde godzilla, or a godzilla football movie

Godzilla 2000 was pretty great if you guys didn't see it. Especially the ending, oh my god.

That's the only Godzilla film I saw in theaters.

Only five people in the whole screening.

    Loved that movie.

Yeah, 2000 had a limited run in American theaters but nothing since then has. Only other one I've seen in a theater was when Final Wars was aired at a film festival in town - also good but I'd seen it like ten times by then so it wasn't quite as cool.

There were also a couple limited release screenings for the rerelease of the original, I think.

When they’re getting their room, Gambit notices a sign on the hotel’s front desk that reads “Ask about our mutant discount.”

    Z2RdbTR.jpg

This by itself would be one of my favorite things in X-Men history, but Gambit’s reaction is to pick it up, show it to Storm, and say “what do you think? We save maybe 10%.” This dude is on an undercover mission to determine whether or not an offer of sanctuary for a persecuted race is genuine, and he is willing to sell out the entire thing for like forty dollars. That is literally the Gambitest move of all time, and I love it beyond all reason.

Back at the mansion, the X-Men are pitching in to help rebuild, complete with Gambit mixing up a barrel of roof tar while wearing his full superhero costume. Does he just not own other clothes? Or does he have a closet full of hot pink body armor and metal boots, including a slightly worn set that he wears for manual labor so that his good trenchcoat won’t get dirty? Animated Gambit, you are an endless garden of delights.

When Comics Alliance was shut down Chris and Matt started doing Movie Fighters. I don't think they're going to review movies together on CA anymore.

what is the deal with IP man? There was a trailer for the new one I guess that was like THE TRUE STORY OF IP MAN and one of the first scenes is him like kicking a car over

  • DragkoniasDragkonias That Guy Who Does Stuff You Know, There. Registered User regular
Ip Man was the guy who trained Bruce Lee in real life.

As far as "Based on a true story" goes its about as "Based on a true story" as most films are...meaning very loosely.

the first Ip Man has some great fight scenes, but it is kind of incoherent as a film and comes off a bit too close to anti-japanese propaganda for me

the second one is a better film in almost every way, also has some great fights, and the end message is pretty positive
