Brian Vaughan's Pride of Baghdad

I guess I'll just make this the Pride of Baghdad thread.

So.

pride_grand.jpg

Graphic novel by Brian Vaughan. You may have heard of him. It's "inspired" by a news story about some lions that escaped the Baghdad Zoo during the invasion of Iraq by the United States et. al. in 2003.

So, uhm. Brian Vaughan's going to be on NPR's Talk of the Nation tomorrow, talking (chiefly) about Pride of Baghdad.

    ...Discuss?

Hey, don't look at me. Manifest told me to make a thread.
I'm looking forward to reading this when it comes out. Also Tomorrow. BKV hasn't disappointed me yet.

Awesome. Talk of the Nation also had a Civil War segment a few months ago. Methinks host Neal Conan likes the funny books.

Well, it looks like they're also talking about Ex Machina and Y: The Last Man.

Nothing about Runaways or The Escapists, though.

Edit: Wow. I knew there was going to be a Y: The Last Man movie, but I didn't realize Vaughan was writing it. One for Ex Machina too.

Vaughan also had a short interview with Whitney of usatoday.com's PopCandy.

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/popcandy/2006/09/new_podcast_y_t.html

There's a discussion about the end of Y: The Last Man with fans. Its pretty interesting, and not too long.

you should hear diane rhem (who i love). her voice, like many of NPRs talent, takes a little time to get used to. she has some terrible voice-debilitating disease.
anyway i heard this interview on NPR today. it was pretty much what you would expect. but it got me interested in this book.

One time I was listening to Daine Rhem, and she had on the guy who was the conceptual artist for Blade Runner (among many other things.)

She said "...people are always so surprised when I tell them Blade Runner is one of my favorite films of all time..."

    It was awesome.

A review of Pride of Baghdad that's pretty good, even though he compares Identity Crisis to Maus and Watchmen.

I got the book this morning and read it twice.

There are a couple things that bother me (mostly some linguistic issues)

[spoiler:e440a30abc]Like Zill making that comment about how "you don't look a gift horse in the mouth, you eat it" and then didn't recognize horses when they ran into some[/spoiler:e440a30abc]

    But overall it's good.

    ENDING SPOILER

[realspoiler:e440a30abc]Man, the ending was sad. I mean, I was expecting that, mostly because Neal Conan hinted at it in that interview (and Brian Vaughan made a comment to the effect of "shut up you idiot, other people haven't read it", only much more politely), but I was expecting Ali to survive if nothing else. I guess if I had read the news story I would've known better.[/realspoiler:e440a30abc]

You have set the bar above pretty much anything I've bought in a long while.

If you have exaggerated in anyway I will make it my mission in life to burn everything you have ever loved and make you wish for the end long before it is gifted to you.

But if it is that good I'll send you a very nice wedding present.

I didn't really read it. I never said I "got the point" I said it was sad. It was. Sad ending. I said four words and you had to jump all over me for some reason. And that reason was because I missed the point of the book.
