unless I am missing something in all his obituaries... it's ridiculously impressive that Clancy was never actually in the military, at any level
the level of detail seems almost impossible

he was obsessed with military traditions and culture and hardware
and the military loved him for it and gave him all sorts of crazy unrestricted access to bases and personnel that was pretty much unheard of in cold war era america
i'm pretty sure he knew the US military better than most of its members
For some reason cnn had Clancy in as an "expert commentator" I just wanted to be all. Guys, you know his books weren't real right?
They had him on cnn as an expert commentator on 9/11 because his most recent book, Executive orders, had someone crash a plane into an important building. I kind of got the feeling CNN was trying to blame him for giving the terrorists the unique idea that driving something massive and explosive into something may destroy it.

I need to pick up some Clancy books again--not least to see why The Bear and the Dragon was so reviled (I rather liked it, but I've always been rather stupid and inattentive when reading fiction)

The Bear and The Dragon was where I real noticing Clancy's prejudices shine through.
The racism, for one thing, plus these wierd conspicuous homophobic asides.

And Rainbow 6 is my favorite book ever.
I have sad face now.

Satans..... hints.....
Debt of Honor / Executive Orders are Jack Ryan books
While I agree with all of this, Operation: Mystic Tiger can burn in hell for all time.
Oh that level was a punishment from God for our sins to be sure
Along with Raymond "Tuco" Cruz as Ding Chavez!
I can't even remember the plot anymore thanks to a memory like a sieve, except remembering that that book was my favoritest thing ever back when

Also superpresident Jack Ryan was silly.

it looks awfully generic, but I trust Kenneth Branagh as a director and I like Chris Pine a lot, so we'll see
super tired of the whole, someone is dating a secret agent and then gets mad they didn't reveal it to them, thing
lady of course he can't disclose all kinds of shit just cause you're dating
