I feel like the article--and, by association, this thread--is attempting to conflate two different points into one argument.
The first is that a startling number of mainstream reviewers appear to either be ignorant of or content to ignore the problematic elements of games like Bioshock and GTA.
The second is that the cult of personality around certain games encourages reviewers to not be completely honest about their true feelings.
Both are good points that I myself have argued before.
But there's something weird with how Tevis is combining the two. 'Cuz when he does that, it kinda sounds like, "Be honest with your reviews, but only in a way I approve of."
Which, obviously, that's not the message he intends judging by the latter half of the piece.
But those first few sections of the article are kind of a weird, muddled combination of multiple arguments.
"Oh, one more thing," Aonuma wrote. "I see many of you have been asking about a remake of Majora's Mask for Nintendo 3DS. It's nice to see such a strong response to this title, and we haven't forgotten about Link's adventures in that world. If you play A Link Between Worlds, you may better understand what I mean by that."

don't you fucking do this to me aonuma
My guess is the mask salesman makes a cameo in that game.
every second I am not playing it I am dying inside
Don't buy a 2DS.
I have pretty limited funds, most stores around here don't sell regular 3DSes unless they're the XL, which is $100 more than the 2DS, and I've heard surprisingly good things despite the dumb as hell design.
I'd like to point out that there are people out there right now criticizing the Giant Bomb crew for playing the Hatsune Miku game without researching and knowing the difference between Miku and Luka. Would bringing in a vocaloid expert really have made their coverage of that game better?
To someone who actually like those games?
Absolutely.
The thing about Giant Bomb is that Quick Looks aren't reviews, they are often purely for comedic purposes
quick looks get more hits than their reviews, and they absolutely help give an impression of both the game and the players/reviewers
I think Quick Looks are infinitely more helpful that reviews
But even then, some degree of familiarity is needed. The sports QL's, while funny, are completely useless if you're trying to decide whether or not to buy those games because no one on staff cares enough about sports games to be able to play them in such a way as to show the quality of the actual game.
I think my favorite part of the Stanley parable so far is when the narrator asks you to review his indie game and if you make him mad he goes and plays mine craft and makes you admire his dirt house

i think it says a lot about the stanley parable that people are willing to completely believe that's a thing that happens in the game and not farg making a joke
(i don't know which is which i think it could go either way)
today I entered a raffle at work for Monday Night Raw tickets, mostly because GB talks about wrestling so much that I feel like I should try to see this dumb thing in person

I stopped following RPS around the Sim City debacle
Their tone was so fucking smug and I told you so that it put me off them forever
no kinkshaming
So, that's different.
It was cool and different and good but I don't get the overabundance of praise
That is all I have to say, because saying more would result in me playing less Pokemon X/Y than my brain and body want me to right now ok bye

I am interested in seeing how that turns out + is received
assassin's creed revelations' walking simulation sections were not highly reviewed

Wait what? Burial at Sea has no shooting?
I mean I get that shooting isn't the draw in a Bioshock game but that seems... weird.
Which is crazy because I thought those sections were pretty neat
I'm going to simulate walking through Abstergo offices so hard in AC4

Well, maybe that busted Madden game...
Only the first half
Oh okay, then I guess that just makes that like the first hour of Infinite, which was fantastic.
Walking is controlled falling.
Not a lot of people know that.
Oh man that's out isn't it
...and it's only 11.99?
...damn it
hey not to do a thing but the jokes are kinda the entire game so can you spoil that
How is it so far?
