So the Xbox One reveal at E3 left a lot of people confused. they came out with a vision for how the next generation was going to play out, and the community at large made their voices heard with regards to not liking this vision. Since then, Microsoft has changed almost all of the policies in question, but there is still some confusion regarding how it all works. So if you are concerned about the ability to play used games or if the NSA is going to watch you eat Doritos in your underwear, check these points, straight from the horse's mouth.
Play Xbox One games online or offline. - Your Xbox One doesn’t need to be connected for you to enjoy offline features of games. In fact, you can take the Xbox One anywhere and play any disc-based Xbox One game on it. The only times you need an online connection are for initial set-up of Xbox One, and to get the latest system and title updates before you start playing some games.
Share, trade-in, resell, gift, & rent game discs to your heart’s content. - Use Xbox One’s disc-based games just like you do today – there are no limitations to using and sharing them: it works like it does today on Xbox 360. If you’d rather get your games digitally, you can purchase from Xbox Live and get instant access to playing.
You control your privacy. - You decide how personalized Xbox One is to you and your family, including privacy settings, manual or automatic sign-in, and how data is used. And when you play games or enjoy apps that use sensitive personal data, such as videos, photos, and facial expressions, no one except you can access it, without your express permission.
Easily turn Xbox One and Kinect on or off. - To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” This puts Xbox One into standby mode where it’s only listening for the voice command, “Xbox On.” 6 You can also turn off your Kinect through the system settings, or you can simply unplug it. Xbox live on the Xbox One is a much refined, much expanded descendant of the Live service on the 360. The friends list has grown from a restrictive 100 to a much less confined 1000, and the ability to "follow" people without making them a friend also exists, allowing you to keep an eye on high profile people who may not have room to fit all of their fans on their friends list.
Xbox Live also has deeply integrated sharing features, leveraging social media streaming site twitch.tv to allow people to watch you play and give commentary over the Kinect. You can also do asynchronous sharing as well by telling the xbox to record the awesome thing you just did, which will tap into the "always running" DVR feature of the console (it goes back five minutes), letting you go to the editor later, modify the clip to your liking, and upload it to be viewed by other friends on xbox ones, or people at their PC/Mac/Tablet/Phones.
Probably the biggest upgrade to xbox live this generation is their deeper use of Microsoft Azure; a cloud platform used for "big data" operations by business entities. Xbox live has been running in Azure for some time now, but developers are now able to create profiles for their games that can spawn dedicated servers inside Azure, as needed, for their titles. What this means is that As long as the developer writes for Microsoft Azure, Peer to Peer gaming, Host Advantage and NAT/UPNP issues are a thing of the past. All games gain the benefit of having a dedicated server for online multiplayer; an even playing field for everyone connected and increased performance.
These dedicated servers are not only limited to online multiplayer, however. A dedicated server could be spawned simply to offload processor-intensive calculations, such as calculating AI algorithms or massive dynamic physics responses, and send the data back to the console to run with it, allowing the processor on the console to focus on the game you are playing and not the stuff you will be running into eventually. Clever use of this could reduce or eliminate load times for many games, or provide far more compelling enemies to square off against, who learn from your actions and respond accordingly.

It also will let you compete against friends who are also using it. This may very well be a "killer app" for a segment of the household who are not console gamers, but want a way to exercise at home.
It also does a good job showcasing how much more powerful the new Kinect is from the prior generation. Speaking of which...
Kinect 2 and the UI

It had a lot of promise, and as a hacker/homebrew tool it did some amazing things... but it never really meshed with the whole xbox experience. There were a small pool of games that were good, and otherwise it was a bit of a fad that burned out well over a year ago. The voice commands were spotty, the sign-on capabilities were limited, and it never realized its potential.
This new Kinect is a correction of almost all of the flaws of the original. It is fast and responsive, the microphone array can place where the voice command is coming from to within five inches (basically, your face), and the voice commands are much more comprehensive.
The Kinect also allows for quick and easy entry of promotional codes.
Beyond just the Kinect and the easy voice commands, the user interface allows you to run multiple tasks at once. Popular examples include having a walkthrough open on the side of the screen while you are playing the game, or putting a football game you are watching off to the side while you are playing a game with friends. And how do you have that football game in the window? glad you asked...
HDMI In
The Xbox One is designed with an HDMI passthrough port. With a simple voice command of "xbox watch TV" it will switch to that port, and allow you to use whatever is happening there as an "app" on the xbox. Furthermore, if you live in a region they are supporting (Only US/Canada at launch, with additional countries forthcoming) you can control the entire TV experience with voice, using a slick guide overlay that knows what shows are airing and where. Saying "xbox watch archer" will show you not only the netflix option, but also what channel it is airing on and when, and the ability to tune in right from that screen. And when your friend invites you to play a Titanfall match, you will see the notification overlayed over your live TV, making switching back to gaming as simple as telling your xbox to "play Titanfall".
SmartGlass
The SmartGlass interface mimics that of the Xbox One Dashboard, and allows you to control many of the console's capabilities directly through the app. It also provides a great deal of interesting "second screen" functionality in games, including but not limited to:
- There will be a "Help" button available in many games that will open up a combo manual/strategy guide, that can be contextual, based on where you are in the game and what you are doing.
- You can be in a matchmaking lobby on the Smartglass while continuing to play the single player game on the TV.
- Developers can build custom game functionality and control into the device, which is extremely responsive and low latency due to the direct wifi connection. An example at launch includes Dead Rising 3, where your Smartglass device becomes the characters smartphone from which you can call NPCs, get text messages from people in the world, use "apps" and get world info on it directly related to the game.
SmartGlass can also browse through the media services and Live TV guide, allowing you to see if there is anything good to watch without leaving your game.
Without a doubt, the most impressive demo of what SmartGlass is capable of is Project Spark.

This forum tends to be better about fan-silliness, but a lot of you tend to get all hot and bothered if anyone besmirches the House of Plumber. - As an addendum to the above, there is no guaranteed lifespan to this thread, and how long it lasts is inversely influenced by how bad behavior gets. We will not hesitate to take this thread away if people cannot act like adults.
- Please cut down on the "witty" image macros. Chances are someone else has posted it (probably multiple people) and it doesn't add much to the discussion.
- Report bad behavior. I am stunned at how giant spats can break out and not one of you goobers think to report it. Do not try to handle bad behavior on your own: let the mod team handle it.
- Don't use general insults against groups to describe those who disagree with you as a method to get around the edict. People who like the One are not shills or idiots, and critic of the One are not virginal neckbeards. And general use of these terms will be treated as an edict infraction.

- This thread is not permanent. You will definitely lose at some point after January 1st, 2014. While exceptions have been made for hardware that's been struggling and cannot maintain a lot of active threads on specific games. Reviewing the console itself seems stupid to me.
with all the extra bells and whistles that consoles come with these days its worthwhile i have a run down of what the machine can do and how well it does it. updating it as it grows and more features are added.
putting a numeric score on all that is dumb though. even more so than review scores in general.

But I agree with Wraith... the new systems are not just "put the games in and go" with a couple of tacked on extras (cd/dvd/br playback). They do a hell of a lot more now. Even the 360 was, at launch, nowhere near the machine we have now... but the ps4/xb1 come standard with a whole slew of extra stuff you can do without even touching a game... not to mention a bunch of things tied in with the games themselves (capture, sharing, etc).
So I think a review is actually fairly well deserved on them.
I do think putting a number on the console is silly though.
Yeah, I was just going to trade them in at Game, but my partner convinced me to Ebay them, would have got £110 altogether at Game, so getting nearly three times that is a win!
That much I agree with overall.
Although I suppose you can assign numbers in certain areas. IE: If the console is unreasonably loud, or obvious crap build quality, etc. Things like that can be rated. But a console's "worth" is defined by the games on it... so you can't really "score" a brand new console that just launched.
