So, there's a negotiated proposal to fit Boston PD cruisers with GPS units, allowing for them to be tracked in real-time. This would not only promote effective deployment of units, but would add a new layer of accountability.
Needless to say, some officers have a problem with this. While there are some legitimate concerns, there's also a sense of opposition to being monitored in any form.

I will say that there is a long tradition of having completely inadequate security configurations on vendor provided police equipment and this could put police lives at risk and allow the technologically savvy criminal to monitor police presence in an area remotely. The computers with publicly facing IP addresses and wide open ports being installed on squad cars comes to mind. You could remotely jack the signal from the dash cam among other things.

Some freight truck companies track their vehicles via GPS. (edit - just to provide an example of GPS tracking being implemented and nobody fusses)
I see no problem with this. There is no privacy being invaded. It's your work vehicle, not your private vehicle.

Granted they often don't work that great.
But yeah. That should have them. For their own dumb safety at the least.
