Hello, Xbox One Thread!

As this thread nears 100 pages, I must take the rough task of carrying out my threat in the OP: it is now January, and the Xbox One Thread will soon be a memory.

However, it would be cruel to pop in and say that you have just five pages to go, so there will be one final thread to chat about the new system. After that thread reaches its end, the plug shall be pulled on Xbox One threads for good. However, given how long this thread has managed to last even during launch day hysteria, the thread will likely be sticking around for a few months unless something crazy happens to drive up posting, so don't be too sad.

Are you getting an xbox one? Would you like a community of classy folks who are less likely to scream racial epithets at you while you are shooting mans or hacking zombies?

Click here and add your name to the list. Also, send friend requests to everyone on the list.

Xbox One: The Facts
So the Xbox One reveal at E3 left a lot of people confused. they came out with a vision for how the next generation was going to play out, and the community at large made their voices heard with regards to not liking this vision. Since then, Microsoft has changed almost all of the policies in question, but there is still some confusion regarding how it all works. So if you are concerned about the ability to play used games or if the NSA is going to watch you eat Doritos in your underwear, check these points, straight from the horse's mouth.

Play Xbox One games online or offline. - Your Xbox One doesn’t need to be connected for you to enjoy offline features of games. In fact, you can take the Xbox One anywhere and play any disc-based Xbox One game on it. The only times you need an online connection are for initial set-up of Xbox One, and to get the latest system and title updates before you start playing some games.

Share, trade-in, resell, gift, & rent game discs to your heart’s content. - Use Xbox One’s disc-based games just like you do today – there are no limitations to using and sharing them: it works like it does today on Xbox 360. If you’d rather get your games digitally, you can purchase from Xbox Live and get instant access to playing.

You control your privacy. - You decide how personalized Xbox One is to you and your family, including privacy settings, manual or automatic sign-in, and how data is used. And when you play games or enjoy apps that use sensitive personal data, such as videos, photos, and facial expressions, no one except you can access it, without your express permission.

Easily turn Xbox One and Kinect on or off. - To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” This puts Xbox One into standby mode where it’s only listening for the voice command, “Xbox On.” 6 You can also turn off your Kinect through the system settings, or you can simply unplug it. Xbox One does not require a Kinect to be plugged in for the system to function.

Exclusive Launch Titles

Ryse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnce_mKlmpw
God of war-ish QTE filled beat-em-up title. Early previews are crazy mixed on this title on everything except the visuals, which are supposedly right up there with Killzone as the best of the new generation.

Dead Rising 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZwKGeutyUw
Tons of Zombie, crazy weapons, bizarre costumes. It is every bit as ridiculous as any prior Dead Rising - don't let the e3 reveal fool you.

Forza Motorsport 5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYTx9DFWMSI
I mean, what more is there to say? It's Forza. With cloud-powered generation of an AI "drivatar" that makes money for you and races for you while you aren't playing, and very pretty graphics.

Killer Instinct
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4twGs2TGQM
The old Rare fighter resurrected. The people in charge seem to be very much in love with the original, and have been getting lots of feedback from the fighting community during development. It's a free to play title, with "seasons" of characters to buy individually or in packs, and a rotating free character, like League of Legends.

Crimson Dragon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_GDszac6X0
Did you like Panzer Dragoon? Well, this is more Panzer Dragoon under a different name, made by the same guy who made the original titles. 20 bucks, digital-only title.

Lococycle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1UmbczCnls
Twisted Pixel, maker of Splosion Man, the Maw and Comic Jumper, makes a zany digital-only title that looks like fast, mindless fun.

Zoo Tycoon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFbodaDC9R0
The PC series revived, now with kinectimals.

Powerstar Golf
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raIUGJ3P5a0
This one might be a surprise launch hit. What appears to be a cute, Hot-Shots Golf knockoff actually has a deep RPG style system for character and caddy advancement, downloadable cloud saves so you can play against your friends' best, and a "loot system" that takes cues from Diablo and Borderlands to create custom clubs, balls and other items to give you special abilities in-game, like skimming lakes and causing your ball to split into 5, and taking the best landing spot.

Peggle 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-cKwZyLlwA
Timed Exclusive. Clearly the game that will win the console war, and worth the money hat.

Cross Platform Launch Titles
Assassin's Creed 4
Battlefield 4
Call of Duty: Ghost Doge
FIFA 14
Just Dance 2014
Madden 25
NBA2K14
NBA Live 14
Need for Speed: Rivals
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

Xbox Live and "The Cloud"
Xbox live on the Xbox One is a much refined, much expanded descendant of the Live service on the 360. The friends list has grown from a restrictive 100 to a much less confined 1000, and the ability to "follow" people without making them a friend also exists, allowing you to keep an eye on high profile people who may not have room to fit all of their fans on their friends list.

Xbox Live also has deeply integrated sharing features, leveraging social media streaming site twitch.tv to allow people to watch you play and give commentary over the Kinect. You can also do asynchronous sharing as well by telling the xbox to record the awesome thing you just did, which will tap into the "always running" DVR feature of the console (it goes back five minutes), letting you go to the editor later, modify the clip to your liking, and upload it to be viewed by other friends on xbox ones, or people at their PC/Mac/Tablet/Phones.

Probably the biggest upgrade to xbox live this generation is their deeper use of Microsoft Azure; a cloud platform used for "big data" operations by business entities. Xbox live has been running in Azure for some time now, but developers are now able to create profiles for their games that can spawn dedicated servers inside Azure, as needed, for their titles. What this means is that As long as the developer writes for Microsoft Azure, Peer to Peer gaming, Host Advantage and NAT/UPNP issues are a thing of the past. All games gain the benefit of having a dedicated server for online multiplayer; an even playing field for everyone connected and increased performance.

These dedicated servers are not only limited to online multiplayer, however. A dedicated server could be spawned simply to offload processor-intensive calculations, such as calculating AI algorithms or massive dynamic physics responses, and send the data back to the console to run with it, allowing the processor on the console to focus on the game you are playing and not the stuff you will be running into eventually. Clever use of this could reduce or eliminate load times for many games, or provide far more compelling enemies to square off against, who learn from your actions and respond accordingly.

Xbox Fitness
No seriously, watch this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPyjvfLZdF8
This is completely free for all of 2014, has thousands of dollars of workout videos and programs in it, and uses the new Kinect to inform your posture and speed so that you get the most out of your workout. It also will let you compete against friends who are also using it. This may very well be a "killer app" for a segment of the household who are not console gamers, but want a way to exercise at home.

It also does a good job showcasing how much more powerful the new Kinect is from the prior generation. Speaking of which...

Kinect 2 and the UI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhe6jV-APwM

So the first Kinect was a bit of a mixed bag. It had a lot of promise, and as a hacker/homebrew tool it did some amazing things... but it never really meshed with the whole xbox experience. There were a small pool of games that were good, and otherwise it was a bit of a fad that burned out well over a year ago. The voice commands were spotty, the sign-on capabilities were limited, and it never realized its potential.

This new Kinect is a correction of almost all of the flaws of the original. It is fast and responsive, the microphone array can place where the voice command is coming from to within five inches (basically, your face), and the voice commands are much more comprehensive.
kinectcommands.png

The Kinect also allows for quick and easy entry of promotional codes.

Beyond just the Kinect and the easy voice commands, the user interface allows you to run multiple tasks at once. Popular examples include having a walkthrough open on the side of the screen while you are playing the game, or putting a football game you are watching off to the side while you are playing a game with friends. And how do you have that football game in the window? glad you asked...

HDMI In
The Xbox One is designed with an HDMI passthrough port. With a simple voice command of "xbox watch TV" it will switch to that port, and allow you to use whatever is happening there as an "app" on the xbox. Furthermore, if you live in a region they are supporting (Only US/Canada at launch, with additional countries forthcoming) you can control the entire TV experience with voice, using a slick guide overlay that knows what shows are airing and where. Saying "xbox watch archer" will show you not only the netflix option, but also what channel it is airing on and when, and the ability to tune in right from that screen. And when your friend invites you to play a Titanfall match, you will see the notification overlayed over your live TV, making switching back to gaming as simple as telling your xbox to "play Titanfall".

SmartGlass
smartglass.png
Xbox SmartGlass turns your smartphone, tablet or laptop into the perfect companion to your Xbox for unique second screen experiences. Unlike on the 360, where the SmartGlass application had to connect to Microsoft's servers and then communicate with your xbox through them, you can directly connect up to 16(!) SmartGlass devices to one Xbox One over your local wifi or wired network.

The SmartGlass interface mimics that of the Xbox One Dashboard, and allows you to control many of the console's capabilities directly through the app. It also provides a great deal of interesting "second screen" functionality in games, including but not limited to:
  • There will be a "Help" button available in many games that will open up a combo manual/strategy guide, that can be contextual, based on where you are in the game and what you are doing.
  • You can be in a matchmaking lobby on the Smartglass while continuing to play the single player game on the TV.
  • Developers can build custom game functionality and control into the device, which is extremely responsive and low latency due to the direct wifi connection. An example at launch includes Dead Rising 3, where your Smartglass device becomes the characters smartphone from which you can call NPCs, get text messages from people in the world, use "apps" and get world info on it directly related to the game.
dr3-sg.jpg

SmartGlass can also browse through the media services and Live TV guide, allowing you to see if there is anything good to watch without leaving your game.

Without a doubt, the most impressive demo of what SmartGlass is capable of is Project Spark.

Project Spark
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGcAkK5h9fo
Project Spark is Little Big Planet on Steroids, with massive social engagement and using every tool in the xbox one's bucket. Record voiceovers and motion capture animations using the kinect, design landscapes and terrains using smartglass, develop complex puzzles that rely on touch or controller input... the sky seems to be the limit. Below is from an interview where they discuss how Project Spark makes use of SmartGlass.
What we have created is not really a “companion” app as much as a mirror of the Xbox One experience, and more. It delivers the full power and visual fidelity of Xbox One with the additional benefit of the Windows 8 touch interface and a virtual keyboard on the device connected via SmartGlass. This means that you can play, create, and share on SmartGlass devices.

Anything you can do on your Xbox One in “Project Spark,” you can do with “Project Spark” on SmartGlass. This even includes playing games built with, and designed for, touch input.
ps-sg.jpg

SmartGlass infinitely expands the possibilities of “Project Spark” user-created games on Xbox One. For example, someone could create a touch-only based game and, using SmartGlass, Xbox One players can play, remix, and share that game without platform limitations. Creators could even create games where there is a mix between the two – a shooter or action game where controller works best, and then puzzles that require touch input to solve.

Our goal is to open players’ imaginations and give them the tools they need to create anything they can dream up. Combining SmartGlass with Xbox One lets us deliver on that promise. Team Dakota is extremely excited to see what you can create with these powerful tools.

Project Spark will be entering into beta mode in January on Xbox One - click the below link to sign up and get in early.

The Rules Which You Better Read
  • This is not a thread to defend your favorite hardware maker, nor is it one to shit over other hardware makers. This forum tends to be better about fan-silliness, but a lot of you tend to get all hot and bothered if anyone besmirches the House of Plumber. Appropriate and sincere comparisons are fine, but we don't need any dramatics. This includes tired memes like "lolsony" and the dreaded "M$".
  • We're not going to tolerate people being shit with one another. Expect to be jailed if you go flying off the handle over DRM or something.
  • Yes, DRM talk is allowed.
  • As an addendum to the above, there is no guaranteed lifespan to this thread, and how long it lasts is inversely influenced by how bad behavior gets. We will not hesitate to take this thread away if people cannot act like adults.
  • Please cut down on the "witty" image macros. Chances are someone else has posted it (probably multiple people) and it doesn't add much to the discussion.
  • Report bad behavior. I am stunned at how giant spats can break out and not one of you goobers think to report it. Do not try to handle bad behavior on your own: let the mod team handle it.
  • Don't use general insults against groups to describe those who disagree with you as a method to get around the edict. People who like the One are not shills or idiots, and critic of the One are not virginal neckbeards. And general use of these terms will be treated as an edict infraction.
  • These rules are to be posted in every subsequent thread.
  • This thread is not permanent. You will definitely lose at some point after January 1st, 2014. While exceptions have been made for hardware that's been struggling and cannot maintain a lot of active threads on specific games. The XBox One is likely not going to have that problem, and you have proven that a long-term thread would be a nightmare anyways. So, don't get too comfortable.

so glad this month has gone by quickly. I finished up DR3 for the second time the other day. I still have to finish up AC4 and dip my toes back into Forza. I think I may try to pick up Tomb Raider HD next month if I actually finish AC4.

the conspiracy theorist in me wants to think that ISPs are purposefully moving your request to netflix / hulu / etc through a middleman that uses QoS to diminish bandwidth priority.

All I know is... with both AppleTV and Xbox 360, switching to 8s worked every time.

But setting to googles DNS is only going to effect.... DNS. Its not like you proxy your stream through whatever DNS server you are using.

I'm not denying it doesn't work, it just makes zero sense. Once my computer/device asks the DNS server what IP to goto for penny-arcade.com, the actual content does not pass through the DNS server at all.

If an ISP is doing some QoS shit, then the fix would be to encapsulate the traffic via VPN so they don't know what it is and can't fuck with it. I have fios and there are sometimes downloads that I see going only 50k, I put them through a VPN and then magically get 3-5 megs instead. Clearly my ISP having some sorta restriction there.

Also for DNS, my PS4 is using whatever DNS that my ISP is assigning to me. And my PS4 streams fantastically on netflix, full HD and never buffers more than a second at the start. Try the exact same thing through my Xbone and its going to use the same DNS that the PS4 was, but the quality is night and day. So if there was something wrong on my ISPs DNS server, it would cause the PS4 streaming to suck just as much.

unless the PS4 is requesting a different server than the one your xbox one is.

Here... think of it like this.

    streamexample.xbo.netflix.com resolves to 1.2.3.4

    streamexample.ps4.netflex.com resolves to 1.2.3.5

Your ISP propagates their own custom DNS which their DHCP server will default you to that points:

    streamexample.xbo.netflix.com resolves to 5.4.3.2

5.4.3.2 is run by them, and points you and all your requests to netflix's 1.2.3.4 server, only that it only allows for a 2Mb/s connection through the hop.

And the PS4 one? maybe they haven't gotten to it yet. With Hulu Plus, you used to watch it on the PS3 web browser until the services realized and patched it off. These consoles are still new, and it is possible Microsoft is using the same path as the 360, hence why it sucks from the start.

That's not how DNS works though. You are basically saying the DNS is being used to route or proxy a connection along a different path. If an ISP was going to do something like that, they wouldn't use DNS to do it, they would have some static routes going to 1.2.3.4 pointed to a lower priority path or they could simply have a packetshaper in place.

Also, ISPs don't sit there and manage all the entries on DNS servers, its queried from a larger DNS server if it doesn't have a record already. It would be a pretty insane job for an ISP to manually add every DNS entry to every website their clients goto.

Any issue I've ever had with my ISP (fios) limiting a connection or something, I solve by just setting a VPN to a major hop nearby.... instantly anything I do is at the maximum the source will give it to me.

I wouldn't just rule out my ISP by any means, I'm just saying it would nuts if they bothered to fuck with some DNS entries just to limit netflix. There are far better ways to limit that if needed.

i posted this over in the industry thread, but figured why not get this new thread off to a good start so i'll share it here too.

it looks like MS may have sold more Xbox Ones than initially reported. they're now claiming to have sold a staggering 3.9 million next gen console during the financial quarter which ended on December 31st. while that's still a few hundred thousand short of Sony's 4.2 million PS4s it does drastically shorten the gap between the two and is further proof of the industries health.

they are also reporting sales of 3.5 million Xbox 360s. all in all, a very merry Christmas for MS i'd say.

    http://www.polygon.com/2014/1/23/5339080/microsoft-reports-24-billion-revenue-q2-7-million-xbox-consoles-sold
Microsoft reported record revenue earnings today for the company's second quarter, with $24.52 billion in net revenue and $6.56 billion in net income.

During the quarter, which ended Dec. 31, Microsoft sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles and 3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles, the company said.

  • DehumanizedDehumanized Registered User regular
Those numbers are sold to retail, not sold to customers. It's not any sort of trickery, this is a financial report and Microsoft's revenue is dependent on the number of consoles in retail, not the number of consoles in homes.

The only way that number doesn't end up as "sold to consumers though" is if the ones sold to retail go long enough without selling that the stores return the inventory to Microsoft, which IMO is unlikely. Especially this close to Titanfall. I mean you're right, but when Sony reports their sold number it means the same thing. The internet at large is just acting like the Xbox One must be doing so much worse because when they go to the store they see XB1s on the shelf and not PS4s and get all anecdotal all over the place.

  • DehumanizedDehumanized Registered User regular
Yeah, there's a 0% chance that any of the stock on shelves right now never sells to customers. Even Wii U units are generally moving through from manufacturer to consumers. It will just take longer than it does for PS4 units to sell through.

IMO it's honestly pretty remarkable that XB1 has only shipped like 400k less units or whatever to stores than PS4, considering the combination of the bad press XB1 had after E3 as well as the fact that the system is $100 more expensive and at this point plays almost all the same games outside the few exclusives each system has.

I'm glad both systems are doing well honestly.

Man Peggle is the ultimate "I'm waiting for something to download/install" game. Worth the price just for that.

Also a tiny but if advice Johnny chopsocky, put points into health and guns first. That makes most bosses a breeze.

For those thinking of getting the dead rising dlc, if you're only going for the single mission that's out I'd say it's not worth the price tag. If you absolutely must have every dead rising 3 scrap of gameplay (like I do) then you're probably better off getting the season pass, as in terms of content for cost that'll probably be better value, since you save on each of the dlc packs.

Its short and sweet, has a few nice extra weapons, a solid looking (and hard to flip) new vehicle, and fills in nice little touches and detail about the world (ever wondered how that crashed helicopter got there? This isn't really a massive spoiler, it turns out it crashed). The character is isn't remarkable but he's also not grating, thankfully, I'm more excited to play the female character in the later dlcs.

All the new weapons and vehicle are available to nick as well. You can play it on nightmare mode too, but there's no achievement for it.

Why aren't there any reviews out the for it yet? If anyone has any other questions about it let me know.

@Prohass I grabbed the season pass but haven't had time to play just yet. I heard that the xp earned in the DLC transfers to Nick. Is this in fact true?

Yep. You access the mission by a menu called "untold stories". Your level and skills are the same as whatever your nicks character is, and they transfer over, it's similar to how nightmare mode and regular mode are the same nick, if that makes sense.

Only annoying thing is you can't screw around as the dlc character after the mission, which ends abruptly, but collectables carry over when you start the mission again, so you don't have to grab them all again.

The mission seems to be set the night before you get control nick, so it's got lots of little things like being in the helicopter that you later find crashed, setting up the ZDC base at the taxi place, etc.

Also it has a minigun. Which, yay. Also some badass dual-wielding knives.

the lastest iteration of 'resolution-gate' is that the tomb raider port, which was handled by two different companies (one for xbone, one for PS4) is that the PS4 version runs at 60-45 FPS and the XB1 version is locked at 30. prepare those dicks for waving, gentlemen. we have a contest a-comin'.

I just got Tomb Raider: DE, and it's pretty great, though with a little jerry rigging I can see this very easily turning into Hunger Games: The Game.

Also: Am I playing Lego Marvel Superheroes wrong? I think I'm on the last mission (Asteroid M) and I'm only at like 21 percent completion.

    1) Do more missions / side missions open up the more bricks you collect?
    2) How do I get Ant Man?
    3) What is a Red Brick, and how do I get one, and what do they do?

    1) explore in free roam, there are missions all around the map.
    2) also on the map, many characters are unlocked by completing a task given to you in free roam.
    3) about red brickz

The game is based of all completion so if you are just finishing your missions you are about on target. After that you can go back and use the guys you didn't have unlocked to get hidden items and the Stans you couldn't save cause you didnt' have the powers. There are Deadpool tales that are gold brick blocked. After that just wander around town unlocking everybody.

Didn't know that they were done by two different companies. Actually was milling about why it came to be in my head as I played the original a few minutes ago. Still unsure if I want to buy it either way though, stupid ranked wins achievement is in the new one too.

Also, are all the map packs included? Can you use the hitman silverballers in MP?

Pretty positive all the DLC is included

That won't make the multiplayer any good, sadly

So, I don't have a One, but my brother does. There's this game we like to play together. Well... I like to play it with him. It's called "Netflix Trollin' ".

We've played it twice, both times great fun.

1st time: *poke head in* Watchin' Netflix, huh? Ah, Always Sunny. Hah! Kitten MittensXBOX TURN OFF!

    "! Xbox NO!"
    YES!
    "NO"
    YES!
    "XBOX stop listening!"
XBOX LISTEN TO MEEEE*had to run away cause he was gettign out of his chair...*

2nd time: *poke head in* What the hell is so funny? Oh, watchin Netflix? This that prank show?
    "Ha ha, yeah."
*pretend I'm watching it, while slowly turning to look at him, he finally feels me staring at him*
    "...What?"
    :3
"What? Oh.. don't you fucking-" XBOX REWIND! *take off running, cackling like a mad imp*

Ah, it's fun. I'm kind of dreading my eventual One purchase now, though.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

I feel like we HAVE to see a "gears trilogy" HD release for the Xbox One at this point, along with whatever Black Tusk makes next.

It would just be silly of these guys to not do a Halo 1-4 Collector's Edition, and a Gear 1-3 Collector's Edition, with a new set of achievements.

    They would sell like gangbusters.
