In this thread we talk about exciting things like new careers, middle management, and flipping burgers.

We also find out that like 90% of the people on the forums work in IT, nerds.

I'll make a better OP when I'm not at work synergizing these diversificationisms.

Some fucker made coffee in the communal coffee machine without putting a filter in there.
This is the second time this has happened in a week.
I have left a stack of filters on top of said coffee machine and also attached a note to the front saying "did you remember a filter?"
Nobody knows who fucked this up. Or how they did so twice.

I feel like ass but here I am. Already missed most of last week, and it's not something you can catch, so I came in because technically I am capable of sitting upright now.

This is probably the least useful I've been at work in ages.

    Hi Jerb Thread!
I've had an interesting couple of months since moving to Seattle for work.
The client I moved up here to support has not come through with the orders they told us we had for this location. But orders, tonnage, and profits are up across the country for this customer.
So everybody's happy except me, who is sitting all alone in a small office with nothing to do except look at the internet and wait for an email to come in.
On the plus side, I've met some cool people and got to explore a little. But yeah, as transfer promotions go, being bored out of your skull is not what you want to do.

Ugh, that sucks. I'm hopped up on pain meds and oragel to get through until Thursday's dentist visit myself. On the plus side, I slept like a baby last night - I'd never had hydrocodone before and it certainly did its job.

I need to update my resume with all my projects and responsibilities but whenever I work on it, it just makes me more frustrated and I want to just walk out the door.

Also writing my first resume including a non-summer/non-student job is intimidating.

Seriously man, server admin is all the problems of development compounded by audit/security and magnified by lack of budget.

PS - Security/Audit/Compliance are for pissing off. If you aren't triggering their flags on a regular basis, they aren't doing their jobs or you're not pushing hard enough.

I can't help but wonder about how that fellow managed to keep his gigantic balls from getting in the path of the... Aforementioned poop.

Like, it take's some pretty big ones to drop your dockers to your socks, and just shit out a shit in the middle of the bathroom floor. Odd's aren't high some one is going to walk in, but...

"Um... Jim... What are you doing?"
"Huh? I'm just taking a crap, what does it look like?"
"But... I mean... There's no toilet under you..."
    "Yup. You got that right."

When I worked in a pub (a respectable country pub, not a grimey city pub) we once found a neatly coiled turd on the floor next to one of the ladies' toilets.

Did she do it deliberately or somehow miss? We will never know.

Oh also once a disabled person had an accident which resulted in the landlady later finding a pair of shit-soaked trousers stuffed in the bin in the disabled toilet. And there was poop everywhere. People are gross.

Bad news is I will likely be too busy to post much during work hours anymore.

Good news is I will be busy with interesting and challenging engineering work instead of all the bullshit I did before and I won't be half as bored as I was!

It seems my company finally got sold -- we'd been looking for a new owner.
I was not on the list of company-wide employees and didn't find out until today.
So I'm all alone in a new office, not yet close to generating profit, and now we've got new ownership. Grrrrreat...

It was shaping up to be another quiet end to the evening when suddenly one of the University of Michigan's Hospital helicopters gets escorted to our ramp by public safety and one of the fire trucks.

Apparently one of their hydraulic lines blew and it was coating the whole back of the fuselage and tail and was dripping off. The good news is that they didn't have a patient on board, but the bad news is they were on their way to pick one up.

Got the heads-up from my team-lead and one of the department heads that I'm one of two temps being actively notified of permanent positions opening up soon.

I'm of two minds about this:

Firstly, it's a pay raise, better benefits and a healthy bump to my resume; I'm already doing a majority of the work that the full-timers do, I just need a few classes to prep me for one of three different positions that are approaching proper availability. Both my team-lead and department head have expressed interest in continuing to work with me, mostly because my numbers are through the roof and the brief period of 'training-through-failure' I went through several months back ... well, they can't really hold that against me since I wasn't trained to proper standards.

On the other hand, my airline doesn't have a lot of positions open in the DFW metroplex and that's A Big Deal for me; I want to get back to my friends and family, I miss hanging with my peeps, I miss my regular tabletop gang, I miss my drinking/cooking/barbecue buddies ... I miss hanging with my brothers and watching them grow. I miss talking about life with my dad. On top of all that, life here in Houston is grating on me; apart from @rhylith , I don't know any forumers here and the current tabletop group I'm in is ... well, I don't know them all that well and the chemistry is somewhat lackluster.

As a final weight to be added to either side, I'd like to go back to school and nail down a degree in either mechanical or electrical engineering; practical, hands-on experience is something I don't lack, so the major factor is money and time.

And to think of last July, Payroll couldn't get rid of me fast enough.

You'd think a company that posts a 36% increase in profit YOY would be able to afford to give their managers more than a "Meets Expectations" review and a 4% raise, wouldn't you?
You would be so very wrong.

i have my first One on One with my new manager tomorrow.

This is going to be new to me. Simply because I have not ever had a one on one with a manager ever ever ever that did not also need to involve a union rep (Verizon disciplinary stuff), or... well ever.

I am of two minds about this. One, I am supremely optimistic and looking forward to the meeting basically being some version of "man i am so glad that we took the chance on you and gave you this job". I am leaning towards this being the result simply because, well I am fucking awesome.

I am also afraid that it will not be something like that because I seem to be going a bit against the tide of how things are being done or have always ben done, simply becuase they don't make any sense. And in doing that I'm creating a better customer experience, but I"m also making more work. But I'm trying to streamline, learn, and get myself as much knowledge and experience as I can, while still finishing things in a timely manner.

So yes, I am fucking amazing at my position, and I am flying through the work and i've only ever made like 2 mistakes that I didn't catch myself (granted one of them was almost charging a customer $129/month for their modem rental instead of nothing.... woops). And every time I give my manager an update on where I am with my daily tasks I am constantly being told how awesome I am.

But still, I want to exhibit cautious optimism about this meeting tomorow because while I know that i'm awesome, if I feel too awesome something will always break my bubble and I will dissolve into bitter bitter tears and self-hate.

Oh god please let this meeting go well.

You must've had some pretty decent school lunches.

We had canned peas and scoop full o' starch.

Pizza days were money makers for my school.

Eventually every day was pizza day. Even the poor kid somehow found $1 for pizza day.

We had pizza, plate lunch, or chicken patties with tater tots . My sophomore year they also added a stir fry (more expensive obviously) where you went down the line of items you wanted in it and the sauce you wanted, hand it to the lunch lady who dumped it into the wok, cooked it and handed it back.

We had two lunch lines at school, one that always had pizza and one that had a rotating menu. They both cost the same so it was just a matter of preference.

About every two weeks there would be a spicy chicken sandwich day and I swear to god they used the same spicy chicken breast that Wendy's uses. Spicy chicken sandwich day basically generated a cult around itself, all of us waiting for our poultry savior.

Damn that's definitely not how our lunches worked.
