simon is your australian mobile gsm unlocked? if so it's as simple as getting a local sim card and tossing it in and activating it with whatever plan
if you don't have a gsm phone then yeah just buy a cheap prepaid phone (which comes with sim) and activate it, with an eye for what you value (data or whatevr)
