London is special in that it's the only place in the UK where it's easy to get to Cambridge. Sadly, there's no reason to go to Cambridge and every day more and more groups of tourists get trapped here. Stuck forever on walking tours of the colleges.

I've yet to see a single business man in cowboy boots. Not one.
Lots of cowboy hats though. And the hotel has a little sign letting people know that it has special dispensation to deny access to people with concealed firearms. Which is reassuring.

Well, when I say the art was bad I mainly mean that the character models looked hideous. Really just some of the worst stuff to come out of an AAA game in a while.
The colors were good and the non-character models were generally good, but god damn, the character models were awful. The big-hand thing kind of worked in Fable where it was part of a deliberate uniform cartoon style, but I thought it was an exceptionally bad decision to juxtapose cartoonish hands and faces with normal bodies and normal, gritty, semi-realistic everything else.
The idea of the universe is cool but as you said, EM, it's too hollow. They had a few kind of interesting ideas in the abstract but none of the implementation was good or deep.
you are talking about dishonored, right? i couldn't disagree with this sentiment more. the universe was novel and the art style was incredibly expressive and interesting. the color pallet was great - reminiscent of a watercolor. the creepy talking heart conceit was cool as hell. the gameplay mechanics were a good mix of stealth + action that clicked for me in a way that stealth games rarely do. the characters were fairly interesting and way better than VG standards. the story structure was rather interesting and at times had some emotional gravity.
man if i had to pick a goty from last year it would probably be between dishonored and bioshock infinite. both were really great examples of the art form moving forward.
imo fyi hth etc
I guess part of my problem was that I enjoyed BioShock Infinite quite a bit and then when I played Dishonored later it mostly felt similar or worse across the board.
The colors and gameplay were good, I agree.
I made a game! Hotline Maui. Requires mouse and keyboard.
Update on XCOM:
ronya was killed in action, may his brave actions and poor choice of cover live on in our memories Mim is a monster with an assault shotgun, she basically carries her team on her back
Mya keeps bringing Mim back from the brink of death
Organichu has just been turned into a mechanical monstrosity, more machine than man
Cass is a crack-shot with a sniper rifle and keeps surviving against impossible odds
i feel like this is true to life
Well, duh

i would say they're more examples of the industry competently standing still.
eh
i mean look - the key aspects in which video games fall far short of other traditional narrative arts are in:
character development
narrative competency
emotional depth
distinct visual style
both BI and dishonored moved the form forward in these four aspects IMO
like, you might criticise the industry for bloated budgets and the studio system and a lack of auteur vision in AAA properties or stagnant gameplay or democratizing difficulty levels or something and that is all fair enough, but what I'm centrally interested in right now - narrative development - made some real strides in these games.

Sadly, 21st and Syndalis didn't make it out alive.
Rather, Vanguard went down immediately, and Syndalis was repeatedly accosted by suffocating tentacles, meanwhile 21st epically saved Vanguard's life by stabilizing him and then mowed down waves of aliens, only to be taken down by the last hostile remaining.
Organichu was, predictably, a mechanized murder machine.
I guess the specific objection to BioShock Infinite might be that even in terms of narrative quality it is fairly hard to distinguish from the core formula of System Shock 2, aside that there is a much shinier layer of polish.

i guess i found the kind of vaguely grotesque character models really great. reminded me of a thomas mann book or something. thought it added a lot to the setting.
I mean BS:I did the same concept - big hands, exaggerated features - only somewhat less grotesque and i thought it pretty successful there too, only maybe not quite as contributive to an unsettling milieu.

For serial though:
London: there is fucking loads to do. Depends what you're into, but the usual touristy things will probably do you well. Go to Camden, Covent Garden too, Southbank can be fun if the weather is nice.
Edinburgh: Royal mile is pretty decent, if a bit of a tourist trap. Same with the castle. Umm, drinking. Seriously, loads of great pubs all over the place. One of the ravens lives there, i believe. They might be able to give you better ideas.
Dublin: If you're drinking, stay the hell away from temple bar, terrible tourist trap. The Long stone near the back of trinity is a nice pub and fairly central but there are loads of tohers. Tourism wise, the Guinness tour is pretty fun, Phoenix park is nice (once again, weather dependent), it also has a zoo and Aras an Uachtarain (where the Irish president lives, it's currently a leprechaun. I am not making this up) The viking splash tour is meant to be fun (never done it myself). Tav can probably tell you more, it's been years since I lived there.
Glasgow: Lashings of the old ultraviolence. (I have never been)

Houston is only tolerable before April. From then until November it is a hellswamp.
In my life I've found that April through September to be my least favorite time of the year.

i never played SS2. like, the gameplay of BS:I has been, i guess, rightfully criticized as being samey when compared to the other BS games and presumably the SS's too. i guess i didn't find it irritating but gameplay-focused people like schex probably would.
do you mean that the story was the same as SS2? i guess that would be surprising to me, but maybe SS2 was just way ahead of its time?
if i had to name the key innovation from BS:I it would be elizabeth. wherever else they might have taken the easy or obvious route in developing that game, they spared no expense or attention on the elizabeth character and she felt more real and fleshed-out than any other VG character i can think of right now.
dang man i should have waited a few weeks on thief and tomb raider

still i am heartened that ms is being aggressive in pricing down their games. i predicted it would happen and was met with waves of jeering skepticism and derision on g&t.

i have not gotten far on thief before catching titanfall fever. i'll eventually get back to it.
