ok so i pay them 35 dollars and then on safari (on my mac) and on chrome (on my pc) i have a plugin. i create a master password that is hard to guess but that i can remember, and then from now on whenever i'm prompted to create a password i hit a button or whatever and 1password invents one and stores it. how is the file with all this stuf maintained? i keep it on my dropbox or w-e and point the application at it?
how is this different from say keychain
The main thing I think is that it generates new passwords for you.
You could also use something like Keepass that is free, but without the interface refinement.
I don't use either, because changing 15 years' worth of passwords is something I don't feel like doing.

because it is a well thought out, solid piece of software that unifies everything about your life that needs to be secure.
I mean, if you have reservations I can demo it for you at PAX, but its gonna cost more by then.

and i want to log into my bank on ios
you need to buy it on all platforms you use daily.
That's pretty essential.
Especially iOS/Android, where typing in 20 character passwords with symbols and shit is a massive pain in the ass, and you can just copy/paste from the app into another app.

If you're looking for free, the various Keepass ports now all have support for pretty robust remote-syncing. The Android MiniKeepass app is basically perfect.

Step 1: change your mission critical passwords, like banking, email, facebook, etc.
Step 2: every time you go to sign in to an account (or run into one you are already signed in on), change the password, then store it in 1password.
After a couple of weeks you will be done, without turning into a massive day-swallowing chore.
