Right, so my motherboard has a S/PDIF output, and I'd like to figure out the most cost-effective way of using it.
I don't own any kind of receiver or amplifier at all, let alone one with an optical input. It seems like I could use one of those small portable amplifiers with a 3.5mm output jack to get the sound into my (powered) 2.1 speakers. This is the part where I need help. What are some good hardware options? I can't tell just by looking on Amazon or wherever which ones are actually good+cheap.
Also, I'm not sure but I believe the speakers/phones are quality enough to hear a difference in a cleaner signal. They're the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 set I got years ago. The headphones I use are Audio-Technica ATH-A700's.
