I remember rocking out to some Prince that was on our store radio when I worked at best buy and some teenage girls started laughing at me, but I did not even give a single fuck. OH OH LET'S GO

Other Prince note: he did the soundtrack for the first TIm Burton batman movie, which is probably pretty hard to find online. I dug up a vinyl promo copy of it at a local shop, and aside from the torturous ballads, it goes real hard. Definitely worth seeking out if you haven't heard Batdance before.

Washed Out's new album was, I thought, a pretty serious leap forward. Maybe the whole bird and nature sounds conceit was a little hokey but the music was legit.

I enjoyed his new album, but I prefer the older 80s-influenced chillwave stuff more. Both make me wish for summer to come quicker, though.

Oh I've heard Batdance (and love it)

The Blu-ray for Batman '89 actually has two Prince music videos on it, one of which is for Batdance

I went and saw these guys two weeks ago (they opened for ZZ Ward). Wife and I got shit faced and ended up taking them on a bar crawl. They've got these two Swedish guys who aren't very confident in their English, but are brilliant musicians (they can also drink me under the table, which is no small feat).

Right now I'm into neo disco/80's and pseudo country. No, I don't know what the hell is going on either.

Remember The Refreshments, renowned in the 90's for having a song mentioning one Cpt. John Luc Picard? They've since reformed into Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers and sing songs mostly about doing things in Mexico.

After I got my job to unblock Google Play, I've been listening to SO much random stuff. It's done a really good job of making me branch out to some other stuff.

Of the stuff I've been listening to, most of it is usually Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, and Them Crooked Vultures. So mostly Josh Homme stuff!

QotSA is awesome. They faded into obscurity a little too quickly, I know they're still producing some music... But they're good enough to have stayed popular.

I grabbed Knife Man, Can't Maintain, and People That Can Eat... From AJJ. Really diggin' it. I'm a big fan of the "I'm so passionate I just shout into this mic sometimes, but most of the time I try to sing."

Electric Guest - This Head I Hold (featuring the brother of that guy from The Lonely Island)
This was my goddamn jam last year. Few things are as immediately engaging and relevant to my musical interests. Unfortunately the rest of their stuff doesn't groove quite as hard.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBZgHVXGyBg

The Capricorns - The New Sound
This song is probably the #2 song for the amount of time it was stuck in my head over the past year. 90s indie rock discovered via Kieron Gillen's Young Avengers playlist, I was super late to the party on this one, but I partied nonetheless
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1QAITbAkZ4

The Abrahammer - How Dubstep Music Destroyed My Life
Ridiculously catchy mashup album. My go-to music for something upbeat to listen to while cooking/cleaning
    http://mashupbreakdown.com/hdmdml

Ithaca Audio - Don't hold back, just push things forward
It starts by mashing up the Theme from Shaft and The Imperial March and builds from there.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiZXRZANYmA

also, as I'm the unofficial Hadestown pusher around here, I need to make sure that everyone is aware that a folk-opera retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set in depression-era America is a thing that exists and it is goddamn amazing:

I fell in love with Queens the second I listened to their Lullabies to Paralyze album in high school. Their new one, Like Clockwork feels like they've gone back to that sound and it's awesome.

+1 for AJJ. " People II 2: Still Peoplin' " is one of my favorites.

I've been on a weird pop/popcountry girl kick lately. I think since I've been pretty burned out at work and it's been a stupidly long winter I just find the pop bubble gum aspect of it a bit relaxing and escapist...right now Kacey Musgraves and Ashley Monroe have been my go to along with the new Nickel Creek album. Also I've been going back to the stuff I heard growing up so John Prine and Jim Croche keep sneaking into the mix.

Another vote for Jason Isbell. Just saw him play a bar a couple weeks ago and "Southeastern" has been in personal heavy-rotation since it came out nearly a year ago.
This is "Elephant" from an XM/Sirius performance thingy he did and my favorite track off Southeastern, "Relatively Easy".

And today's cube drudgery is sponsored by Burial's "Untrue," which has absolutely nothing in common with Jason Isbell except for the fact it's presently being pumped into my ear-holes.

Yes! @Fearghaill! Another Electric Guest fan! I showed them to a radio DJ friend of mine, and he just about lost his shit. I've heard The Capricorns before, but didn't write down their name at the time. This time I did. Hopefully I can find an album.

    It will be.

About 15 minutes in, someone is going to throw him a sledgehammer from off stage and he'll sing you songs while violently smashing the piano to very small pieces.

Then he'll light the pile of a piano on fire, and invite you up onstage to dance on the ashes with him.

White Lies is a band who I really enjoy or kind of despise on a song by song basis.

The first album was mostly the former, the 2nd was mostly the latter.

Have you given their newest one a listen? Big TV. Start with "Getting Even" if you can. Great song and it gives you a good idea of what most of the album is going to sound like.

my music listening has been all over the map but here's the best new song i've heard lately
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89A_nh9EtZ4

their latest album came out a little while ago and it's pretty dang good

e: also goddamn i still can not get over that moustache, it's a work of art

e2: granted i'm not as up to date on new releases as i'd like to be but the lines

'if only the good ones die young, i pray your corruption come
swift like a thief in the night, right eye pluck my right eye right out

if only the young ones die good, i pray your corruption would
slip like a slit in the wrist, hack the hand redeem the rest'

are the top contenders for best lyrics i've heard this year

@miscellaneousinsanity, I knew a guy who looked just like that guy. Except he had a thin mustache and was missing the hauntingly beautiful voice.

Have you heard of Deer Tick? Similar vibe, with a tendency to rock out at least a couple times an album. I know these are off the same album, but... They're both so goddamn good.
