I've been listening to so much of the Arctic Monkeys. Trying to make up for the 8 years of my youth in which I ignored them. So here's this jam, which is fun and a tiny bit melancholy, for me anyway:

Sky Ferreira has some excellent stuff. Her latest album is much more consistent, though I still think the EP prior to it has my two favorite songs of hers

also my fave from her newest album (should not actually be NSFW, as I'm pretty sure it's the non-boobs edited album cover, but I don't want it to come out of nowhere for anyone)

I love the Arctic Monkeys. I didn't catch on to this until they were 3 or so albums right in, so I binged hard. What really stands out to me is how individually talened they are, and how good they are at bringing those talents together. Their songs are absolutely filled with little moments where everything just comes together perfectly. I also really like the lyrical style and imagery.

I wasn't really paying attention when Arctic Monkeys became a thing, I've got an album or two in my library... But I usually blow past it.

    Clearly I haven't been listening.

also! if you like girls with great voices, listen to Angel Olsen

    http://youtu.be/PinTAGbIsV4

this is one of the more garage-y tracks off her new album, itself a more garage-y album than her previous, which played much more in the delicate, acoustic, occasionally yodeling and also very good end of her spectrum

Here's another one for the folks who like stringed instruments and dudes singing.

Middle Brother, it's made up of three guys from three amazing bands. Deer Tick, Dawes, Delta Spirit (seriously, all three are gold cocaine for your ear).

Here's my favorite song, because it features all three:

Can someone explain Sleigh Bells to me

Is the production like a hook or do people actually really like how that sounds

I like their writing but its tough to listen to

    It's like Lo-Fi, I think.

Instead of being over produced and stuff, they just slide all the levels to 10, twist the nobs to 11, and break them off.

That, or they're purposefully using old busted processors. Which... Is probably just a style thing.

I mean, Autotune is a sound people like... So, anything is fair game.

I totally bounced off Sleigh Bells sound the first time I heard it, both for the intentially distorted production and the kinda overwhelming volume/intensity

I don't really have an answer for you though, it just kinda grew on me. I don't like it all the time, but it definitely fits certain moods (and helps shape my moods to fit it)

yeah, sleigh bells is purposefully blown out and distorted and people do like how that sounds

their later two albums have kinda droppe that super-blown-out-maximum-volume thing, though (and also are not as good as their first)

I fucking love Lake Street Dive. I think their whole first album, self-titled, is on Youtube. "My Speed", "Hello? Goodbye!", "Neighbor Song"and "Got Me Fooled" are my highlights. Their cover of Hall and Oates' '"Rich Girl" is also a good time.

I'm a huge fan of the Lo-Fi sound, which is has become kind of a rarity it seems, but even I can only take so much of it. Sometimes bands go out of their way to produce a certain "sound", and they forget that having some traditional "we record good songs and make sure you can hear all the parts" sounding stuff is also a good idea. Occasionally use a high end mic with great processing, so I can hear all the words in your song... Maybe?

I mean, most concerts are fuckin' criminal with their audio engineers. They balance that bass up to crazy levels, and washout the vocals. I have never been able to get a straight answer. It's like these guys never take off the headphones they have plugged into the board, and actually listen to the room.

That's def understandable; it's something I'd suggest trying to come back to intermittently if you like certain aspects of it, you might be surprised by what you find yourself able to dig into given enough exposure

for instance, I could not really handle Ty Segall for similar reasons (super distorted production, though in different directions) upon first hearing him, even though I'd liked things in similar veins. But after occasionally listening to his stuff for a bit, I'm pretty much totally into it now

I actually like that, I could do without the vocal distortion, the guitar was bangin', though.

I was sitting here thinking about where I've heard that sound before, Heartless Bastards. These guys really love their distorted guitar, and they definitely do something to the vocals, but not all the time. They also have a huge range... Lots of ballad work, rock and roll, grungy, beat driven, it's crazy... I have a hard time picking a good example because they do a lot.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAJOXrnPIUg

I also think she has a fuckin' awesome voice.

with Ty it's definitely the blanket vocal distortion that was tough to get into; the song I posted isn't the most egregious even, as he's singing in a lower register and at a lower volume

when he starts wailing and/or hollering it can pile up

but yeah heartless bastards are great, just solid rock n roll

    So

I am fairly into some German music, though I don't speak very much (enough to get directions, order food)

It has recently come to my attention that one of my favorite bands has started to re-release some of their songs in english, but the lyrics are not a direct translation

They've attempted to get across the same idea, but the words are changed to fit the rythm better

What are you guys' thoughts on song translations? Keep it in the original language? Do your best (as they appear to be)? Sing a direct translation?

I was at karaoke once and had a friend sing the entirety of 99 Luftballons in German. To his credit (?), he had memorized the German version and the lyrics that were provided were English. It was pretty amazing at the time but I was also really drunk.

You know, I don't listen to any foreign music. I've listened to some French punk, but not much and not for long. I'm also a little too familiar with Spanish (Mexican) hiphop and rap. I mostly just don't get it because I don't speak any language proficiently. I can say that I'd rather listen to the original version, instead of a translation. I mean, song's lose something when the singer isn't really singing the words they want to be singing. Might just be me though. Every translated German song I've heard has been really.... Not great.

I think popular perception of what french culture is like sets you up for a pretty big surprise with that track

it's easy to forget that these people torch cars in protest as a national pastime

After I got my job to unblock Google Play, I've been listening to SO much random stuff. It's done a really good job of making me branch out to some other stuff.

Of the stuff I've been listening to, most of it is usually Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, and Them Crooked Vultures. So mostly Josh Homme stuff!

You sir, have good taste. I'm a huge QOTSA fan, listen to them more than any other band or artist. Their last album ...Like Clockwork was my album of last year, fucking fantastic. The art and animation in the music videos leading up to it's release is goddamn great too.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFca32_7YUU

Also had much more sombre and softer songs, which were also great.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9-m0Vutqes

EoDM and TCV are also rad as hell, the Palm Desert scene in general is unique and fantastic.
QotSA is awesome. They faded into obscurity a little too quickly, I know they're still producing some music... But they're good enough to have stayed popular.

I grabbed Knife Man, Can't Maintain, and People That Can Eat... From AJJ. Really diggin' it. I'm a big fan of the "I'm so passionate I just shout into this mic sometimes, but most of the time I try to sing."

I'd also recommend grabbing their EP Only God Can Judge Me, has some songs on there that'll break your heart.
