i'd say that particular Broken Bells leans synthpoppy, but it's still less electronic and more acoustic-sounding than, say, Freezepop. i believe most of their stuff falls into general indie pop.
i have been listening to Amon Tobin. i love how evil this song is, but it's more ... an aural experience. while there are interesting melodic progressions, it's more contained cycles -- more akin to micropunk than a symphonic movement.

God I love White Light/White Heat so much, my favourite VU album for sure. As much as I love The Velvet Underground & Nico, I just do not like Nico's voice at all, any of her songs just make me wish Lou Reed was singing instead, which drags the album down for me.
Nico, and her assorted ventures, are fantastic. She's definitely... An acquired taste. But, she's pretty good musically. Able to make great songs, and such.

Yo music thread, did anyone else go out for Record Store Day yesterday? There was some pretty great stuff to pick up. I think one of my favorites was the 10" Tears for Fears cover record. Their cover of Animal Collective's "My Girls" is amazing, I think it's better than the original. It's a lot cleaner, and it just feels so fun and lighthearted:

This song by the Malian band Tinariwen is very very cool.
They also has one of the most incredible origin stories of any band.
Tinariwen was founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, who at age four witnessed the execution of his father (a Tuareg rebel) during a 1963 uprising in Mali. As a child he saw a western film in which a cowboy played a guitar. Ag Alhabib built his own guitar out of a tin can, a stick and bicycle brake wire. He started to play old Tuareg and modern Arabic pop tunes. Ag Alhabib first lived in Algeria in refugee camps near Bordj Badji Mokhtar and in the deserts around the southern city of Tamanrasset, where he received his first acoustic guitar from a local Arab man. Later, he resided with other Tuareg exiles in Libya and Algeria.

In 1980, Libyan ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi put out a decree inviting all young Tuareg men who were living illegally in Libya to receive full military training. Gaddafi dreamed of forming a Saharan regiment, made up of the best young Tuareg fighters, to further his territorial ambitions in Chad, Niger, and elsewhere. Ag Alhabib and his bandmates answered the call and received nine months of training. They answered a similar call in 1985, this time by leaders of the Tuareg rebel movement in Libya, and met fellow musicians Keddou Ag Ossade, Mohammed Ag Itlale (aka "Japonais"), Sweiloum, Abouhadid, and Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni. All sang and played guitar in various permutations. The musicians joined together in a collective (now known as Tinariwen) in order to create songs about the issues facing the Tuareg people, built a makeshift studio, and vowed to record music for free for anyone who supplied a blank cassette tape. The resulting homemade cassettes were traded widely throughout the Sahara region.
In 1989, the collective left Libya and moved to Ag Alhabib's home country of Mali, where he returned to his home village of Tessalit for the first time in 26 years. In 1990 the Tuareg people of Mali revolted against the government, with some members of Tinariwen participating as rebel fighters.
Sometimes music can just be too weird for me. Probably just the wrong time of day or something. But that was really close.

So I was sat outside writing, and was suddenly struck by the incredible sight of dawn over the sea, always a magnificent sight, but especially today. The spectrum of the light was amazing and more stratified than normal, to the point that it reminded me of a Tycho album cover! Specifically this one!
Now, while a normal person might take this as a cue to listen to Tycho (which I seriously will do, too much music, too little time), my mind does not work in normal ways, so I instead was drawn to some great Ethiopian soul(?) from the 1970s.
It makes me wish I was in an Addis Ababa hotel in the 70s, the only sounds around being this guy's voice and the sound of ice chinking in my glass. Seriously good obscure stuff.

Not that I have a record player, but I was with a friend who's just starting to get into vinyls and I wanted to support a local business so hey, went ahead and picked up Amy Winehouse's Back to Black for $17
We went to a few places, searching for the Anamanaguchi soundtrack to the Scott Pilgrim game that they put out for RSD
Had no luck and neither did my other friend in Boston, apparently they were going for crazy prices on eBay almost immediately
Coachella was very fun, very hot, very anthropologically interesting. Bands everywhere, stages for days, and then fifty people in line for hours to charge their phones, presumably so they can tweet about how great Coachella is. Perhaps just turn your phone off and enjoy the shows?
I'm pretty bad about paying attention to when bands I like are about to release new stuff, but I'm only like, a month behind on this new song sooooooooooo
Right? There isn't a single song I dislike on this cd. And its got some pretty cool guest appearances. Elton John on Fairweather Friends, Dave Grohl on over half the songs, Trent Reznor, Mark Lanegan (sang a bunch of songs on Songs for the Deaf), and I'm pretty sure they brought back Nick Oliveri to do bass for one of the songs.
I'm going to miss a Tycho show on Tuesday, because of work.

@Anon the Felon I don't think your feelings about Tinariwen are that unusual! I know that about 75% of the time, I find something I love and deliberately don't recommend it to my friends because they'll just be like What the FUCK.
Damaged Bug are out of Castle Face Records, which I got into thanks to the besssst radio show ever, when the DJ was like "Castle Face are the Burger Records of now." (I love Burger Records.)
And also if you guys weren't following it, there is a NEW TUNE-YARDS ALBUM coming out.
i haven't listened to these guys beyond this song, so i can't pick out the main singers, but i can tell you the spotlight dancers -- 's a good routine!
also, i am digging SNSD's "I Got A Boy", i'm guessing in much the same way that i liked "Starships."
