I've only ever bought and worn 2 different pieces of clothes from games. Heavy and Spy TF2 Shirts and ME Hoody. At the time, TF2 changed my life but I don't really flutter back to that in my mind about a story and galactic conquest.
My house is, was, and always will be a House of Quake.
However, I can appreciate some of the things that UT did that set it apart (things like ootb mutators and secondary fire for all weapons), and had some fun slumming playing UT with filthy heathens Unreal fans back in the day. I'm excited to see where it'll be headed in the future now that id is a remnant of its former self, a shambling corpse wandering dark hallways clad in nothing more than a dirty and torn Doom T-shirt.
If anything it'll be nice to see a tournament shooter in UE4.
I have less faith in Epic and a new UT than I do in ID and Doom 4.
Just to be clear that's not even a thimble full of faith.
I am living in the dystopian hell where arena shooters go to die.

I agree with the general "meh" sentiment, though at least the Gears of War games had some fun and industry influence to them (how many games followed suit and introduced third person cover stuff?), while iD's last game was...Rage. Yeah. Not to mention iD's leadership reportedly judged Carmack's continued employment less important than the costs of implementing Oculus...that doesn't inspire confidence in their decision making abilities, even if they did astutely see Oculus support as premature.
(Also, random aside: Chrome wants to autocorrect "dystopian" to "utopian." Optimists, those guys!

Well, to be fair, id did realize that the Doom 4 they had in the oven was a Call of Doomty turdfest and scrapped, then started over.
I enjoy tightly focused maps, but sometimes I wonder what an arena shooter from Croteam would be like. Imagine an enormous Serious Sam style map with 32 people running around blasting at each other.

Oh man speaking of Serious Sam, someone noticed this the other day. Since it's free for people who own the classic Serious Sam games on Steam I downloaded it and jumped in. It is wonderful and joyous. The classic Serious Sam games feel different than the Serious Sam HD versions, with completely different physics. There are even levels in the classics that just wouldn't work in the HD versions because the engine just wouldn't do the crazy shit the level demanded. So it's totally killer that this is a thing because these games deserve to live on in their original glorious incarnations. So grab it, if you have the classics, you already own it. If you don't, what the fuck is wrong with you? It's five bucks until the seventh, go get it!
I forgot I made these cause I got caught up in Dark Souls 2 last night.
@Jeix wins. Glory to the fresh blood! Be sure to install the unofficial patch to make the game 100x better.
Thanks for this @koopahtroopah, going to make sure I get that patch. I have a friend who used to talk about this game non-stop, really excited to try it.
I just found out that my parents are going to be able to make it down here next weekend to visit for my birthday, even though it's a few days beforehand. We're going to Cheesecake Factory for lunch as a combo Mother's Day/birthday thing.
Now I have to get the place cleaned up especially well though.

So I've been jonesing for some sports titles on Steam lately, and I know 2K pulled their older MLB games off Steam due to the license expiring. Anybody know if there's an easy way to pick up one of these older baseball titles that isn't 600 dollars on Amazon?
edit: Maybe I'll pick up Golf Club when it releases for real.
Oh man. I didn't know that. Nostalgia punch. I got that game on disc with a magazine. Boy did it get pretty hard when you only had a tenuous command of English, but it was so fun.
Huh, I was looking for something to play. Not sure why I thought The 39 Steps would be a good choice, but it's not actually a game. More of an interactive novel, which is fine and probably a cool way to read a book. But the control scheme is also a bit odd: you go forward with a clockwise movement of the mouse, and backwards with a counterclockwise movement. So I guess it's supposed to simulate the flipping of a page in a real book but it just makes me feel like Daniel-san.
Well DoctorArch and @Broncbuster. Steam thwarted our attempt at multiplayer last night but I'm up for trying again tonight if you are. It can't fail twice in two nights, right?
Anyone else welcome to join us, of course. Probably for Sanctum 2 at 9est
@Ed Gruberman, if you don't mind my possibly not being mic'ed and having never played any Sanctum or Sanctum 2 before, I'll throw in with you lot this evening.
Many thanks to Broncbuster and Ed Gruberman for good coop times last night. Many towers were placed and damn dirty xenos murderized while trying to steal our precious cores. Sadly Ed's baby was uncooperative (babies, what are they even good for?), but he was still able to get in some solid FPTD with us.
Good fun, although I don't know how you would be able to pull off some of these levels without one or more people helping you, especially where mobs are coming from multiple sources.
FYI to those buying the Star Wars pack this weekend - there is currently an issue with the keygen for Battlefront II. No one is able to play after purchase. Apparently this happened last year and took several days (and sometimes longer) to resolve.

Ever since that nasty Friday night Steam downtime, Steam's stats page have been really out of whack. Currently it only shows two hours' worth of statistics and claims it's from May 2nd:
I've been playing a lot of Star Wars: Empire at War lately. Such a good game. So to that end I've compiled a list of mods of I've been ripping through trying to find my favorite. Here are my thoughts on some of them:
Thrawn's Revenge: One of the largest, seemingly most popular mods for Forces of Corruption. The mod is run by a very professional team and it shows - from the visuals, completed maps, and even intro videos to galactic conquest campaigns. It's frankly incredible. These qualities are undeniable. Where it might lose you are some of the gameplay changes. It favors faster paced combat overall, but in space this can manifest as huge walls of laser fire. Just because a star destroy had 1000+ turbolaser batteries doesn't mean they need to fire in-game. It also has some stuff I'm not a fan of, like most planets max out their space station at level 3, and it has a huge pet-peeve of mine where certain planets, and only those planets, can build certain units. Still, this mod has a lot to like, so I recommend all give it a try. It wasn't my cup of tea thanks to a large departure from vanilla gameplay but you can see the craftmanship that went into it. Also, it still updates as of 5/4/2014! Score! http://www.moddb.com/mods/thrawns-revenge
Republic at War: Another very professional, well done mod. Between detailed models and custom voice overs(!) it sucks you right in. If you love the republic era you'll be engrossed immediately. However, the mod is far from complete. If you check its moddb page, you'll find it suffers from PPS: Preview Picture Syndrome. It's a condition where a mod will post preview after preview of new content and game updates but never actually release anything. Nary a hotfix or test release in sight. I kind of got suckered, because I saw all these awesome pictures but the last release was June 2013... and it shows. Thankfully the mod team is still alive and posts news, but of new pictures of stuff not in-game. Hopefully we will see a June 2014 release.
Sketchy development aside, there are some gameplay issues. First, very significant game balance issues. CiS is completely overpowered. They start GC campaigns with Lucrehulk super carriers and can build smaller carriers right away and there is no counter to them until the Republic hits tech 5. It's really frustrating to see a swarm of droid fighters and realize that there is no counter to them. The only anti-fighter corvettes you get are atrocious. Also, annoyingly, space stations in GC everywhere only go up to level 3, even though in skirmish they can go higher. The team has mentioned balance changes, such as making the acclamator (default ship for the republic) better. But, because there hasn't been a release (even a balance one) the issue persists. This mod is a nice showcase but I'd give it a pass for now. It's too much a WiP. http://www.moddb.com/mods/republic-at-war
Absolute Corruption Mod: This mod adds a ton of new units to your basic Forces of Corruption game without affecting gameplay or changing it. Perfect if you just want a truck load of new units. Some of the models are iffy, but this mod does what it says on the tin - it's the same FoC you love just more of it! My only issue is that it does the same thing where a lot of units can only be built on certain planets and its not always clear. On the flipside, most of the units can be built by all the factions if they hold the planet which is a nice touch. Unfortunately I can't play much of it, unlike other mods I am plagued by tons of graphical issues and crashing. But if you want FoC++ give this a shot and see if it works! http://empireatwar.filefront.com/file/Absolute_Corruption_mod;97499
z3r0x's FoC Addon: Very similar goals to ACM, and my personal mod of choice for FoC. It adds around the same amount of units as ACM but with slightly better implementation on the galactic map (fewer planet specific units). Unlike ACM is also has a lot of independent planets, like Corellia with a huge corellian fleet and Naboo, which is guarded in space by nothing but 50+ squadrons of N-1 starfighters. There was also a pirate planet defended by multiple golan platforms and a motley collection of ships and fighters. There are also two planets to the galactic north taken over by the Yuzzahn Vong, although they are not playable and will not try to take territory, which is really nice because they make good tests to your typical end-game galactic super power (they are scary strong) and would probably destroy everything otherwise.
My only complaint would be that the Zann Consortium lacks good capital ships to start. Its not a purposeful design decision on z3r0x's part but it does seem thematically appropriate for a pirate organization to struggle to get capital ships. Crusader gunships and skipray blast boats are really good though, so it evens out. Unfortunately the mod is no longer being worked on. A real shame. This my favorite FoC++ mod. http://empireatwar.filefront.com/file/z3r0xs_FoC_Addon;77903 http://empireatwar.filefront.com/file/z3r0xs_FoC_Addon;77993

Or they could be doing a straight port of 2k4, and just upgrading the shinies to be all HD in the new engine.
