So far, what they've shown doesn't seem to make you look completely evil. Such as after the fight with Fist. Sure, he shoots Fist in the face instead of something less extreme, but the rationale doesn't seem to be that slaughtering people is a lot of fun and gets you some money.

"Too many people died here, Fist. You don't just get to walk away."

It doesn't sound like the same unrepentant evil. It's just one example from such a huge game, but it gave me hope. We'll see.

EDIT: I believe the bar scene from E3 06 is actually supposed to be there too. That wasn't unrepentant evil either, but it sure was intimidating and not quite the nicest thing you could do or say.

I just saw the trailers for this game as well as the interview where the game is played. I got a boner from it. Its the most beautiful game I have ever seen. I have one month to buy a 360 before the game comes out. No more beer and smoked for me. Life takes sacrifices, and if this isnt worth the sacrafice, nothing is.

I thought that line was amazing.

The only recent video I've seen is the Fist video. What others should I look at?

I also liked the two dudes who held you up. I mean, they kind of are pointing guns at you, so killing them isn't insane, it's actually one of the most sensible options. But it's nicer to just scare the losers off.

If they make being a saint difficult, at least sometimes, I'm cool with it. In KoTOR it was pretty much the only way to get the most out of the game.

This is certainly the most annoying part of moral games. Its almost impossible to see the most of the story being evil because you either just kill NPCs or your party are not inclined to talk with you. Some will because hteyre evil but theyre few and far between. The worst was how they have veins on their face because they're following my example and then give a good lecture on how im losing it.

I have a feeling that this time it will be much better. Look at the transition from Kotor to Jade Empire. In KotoR you realy were just an evil shit, but it was actually OK, because you were a Sith. That was expected, it was fine, believable. And besides all that, if you did take the evil path, then
it only made sense because you were an unrighteous evil bastard beforehand
    .

In Jade Empire it was presented not as the same old same old, but as more of a path. And it wasn't so much that you turned out to actually be evil, as much as that's how the story naturally progressed. Your character was never interested in killing his teammates, it was just what he had to do, and the closed fist isn't a path to allow obstructions. They could have given alternative choise, but I don't fault them too much for it. It wasn't too insulting. With Mass Effect it seems even more natural, and while it still might not be perfect, (in fact I'm sure it just can't be) I have great confidence that it will be amazing.

Mass Effect is months away, and I'm actually more psyched and excited for that game than Halo 3, and I'm really fucking excited for Halo 3.

Baldur's Gate 2 did almost as un-nuanced an alignment system, most choices being "pet/kick", but did very well with providing you with eeeevil people to party with. The only thing you missed was a romance or two, and a couple unique quests from the goodie-goodies. But yeah, shutting off areas of the game is silly. Splitting areas, making play different by pointing you in a different direction, that's fine. But make it at least equally rewarding to be evil. And not in a stupid "You get more gold" sense. I mean in terms of playtime, cool events, etc.

I see one you mean...like I can understand areas being locked off for being evil. I mean people aren't going to want to hang around you if you're a complete ass. But in the same sense you could have areas only available to evil characters. Kinda like a black market/crime underground-eqsue hangout/group.

If they can make the combat not suck so that there's replay value, I'd be fine with a similar game. Kotor's combat is so boring. There's little tactics, and fights are usually too easy to waste special abilities on.

    The environments.

I'm not sure there's really any other way to do a western 3d RPG. Unless you went back to the isometric perspective, like Dungeon Siege, but that is incredibly limiting. It's a bit like saying all RTSs control similarly. Well, yeah. You walk around and talk to characters and play with the equip screen and fight people.

I could go for more isometric games. As seen in Titan Quest, its really easy to make them look beautiful, since the camera is zoomed out. The combat is generally better, too.

In the intro you should hear Keith David, Seth Green, Raphael Sbarge, and whoever is voicing Shepard. No Baldwins.

I always just thought the slightly bland indoor areas was part of the look. ME's visual style is the very clean, smooth, high-tech utilitarian sort of style you see in a lot of sci-fi before (and after to a lesser degree) Star Wars, which was what they were going for.

I can see the KotOR similarity in that you're in space, you have a ship and you have 2 other party members with you; but the character interaction and combat seems vastly different to me. The environments also seem a bit more interactive.

Well, with the character interaction there's very little in the KotOR games that involved two characters interacting (shaking hands, hugging, pushing eachother), in the Fist and Bar scenes alone you've probably got as much character model interaction as both KotORs combined. Instead of seperate pawns having conversations next to eachother (but also lightyears apart), ME's interaction is more cinematic and physical.

Differences in the combat are vast and overt...(although similarities are pretty vast too, like character control, 'dead' party members, enemy locating, ability usage). The big thing seems to be that 'cover' is a bit more aparent and useful (although there were times in KotOR you could abuse the combat engine and run out of enemy range or hide in buildings/rooms).

The environments seem to actually be interactive, though, which gives the combat (and game world) more life. The fact that things explode and stuff flies across the room makes it seem more filled with action and ineractivity (such as the med-room shoot out and the exploding outdoor stuff).

...Hopefully the outdoor stuff gets better, though, because it seems kind of repetitive and bland ("I get to drive around and shoot people, again, you say?"). I'm also not really sure what they could put out there; I'm not familiar with the story in-depth, but it doesn't really seem like it would make sense to drop onto a planet to find a secret hidden chest with fantastic armor and weapons, and then to leave...and that seems like one of the only other things that could happen besides 'drive around and shoot while you look for something/someone').

One thing that I noticed in the gameplay trailers that I really liked, was the fact that the grenades that are thrown about are never thrown directly at a target (like they would be in KotoR for example). Instead, the player in the trailers seems to throw them at a designated point in space, allowing the splash from the grenade to do damage to targets behind cover. It's a small point I know, but I thought it was a nice improvement from KotoR's grenades.

Its funny, I had only been peripherally aware of this game until the other day. Now I have this odd feeling my husband and myself might end up pre-ordering it though we don't have a 360 yet.

The plan is to get either a 360 or a ps3 before the end of november, which we've been arguing about for a bit. Myself for ps3, him for 360 (he's more from the Sierra school of gaming I'm from the NES).

And as of when he saw the extended interviews/previews, he says that it now "primally owns his soul".

Because, I swear to you, it feels to him like a cross between KotOR and Star Control 2. And since those are some of his favorite games of all time, yeah...

Now I just have to figure out which 360 will have the least chance of dying in the long run...

Get the elite, because it's sexy. And it's black, so you can... pretend it's a PS3. Though I haven't the foggiest notion of why you'd want to do something like that.

Yeah, I think my plan is to wait for a better chance of getting a Falcon, so somewhere around the same time as Mass Effect comes out (if predictions are right). We're planning on getting a Hi-def tv for Christmas to replace the flat-screen tube tv we got as a present 5 years ago so either would look good.

We've got a PS2(silver) and an Xbox(LE canadian green) currently, and as long as we get one of the older models of the ps3 it would be less glitchy backwards compatible. I prefer the ps3 as an option because the 360 still doesn't play some of my favorite games for the xbox last I saw, so we'd have to keep our old console. Also I've been deterred by the rrod rate, and that it doesn't have wifi built in standard (I would have to get a wireless hub to prevent this). Also its got the blu-ray dvd option and upsamples the regular dvds.

But the 360 has XBLA which is a big draw. And this game, which, the more I see the more I like.

Though, I admit I'm loving the dialog reaction system most. And the semi-open planetary exploration hinted at. I'm worried about the menu-select combat where it keeps pausing, but that might not be representative of the complete ways of using the system in the end (may be a parallel, more fluid system).

All I know is I can't take my husband along when I get whichever system we do. I hate the stereotyping that happens whenever we go together. Its either like I'm not there or they have to hand-hold me through. Funniest was when I made him get up at 6 am to stand in line for the Wii on opening day, all the people in line seemed to ask me some variation of "are you upset that he made you get up this early?".

...or was it? Perhaps Bioware has teamed up with real-live aliens to perform random abductions, making people play-test Mass Effect, then returning them to their homes and altering their minds to think it was a dream.

If that is true, please put me on the abduction list, Bioware/Alien hive-mind people...
You only wish for it to happen until they reach for the anal probe.

do I even need to bother putting in the 'sounds dangerous...' bit here? Nah, I don't think it's necessary...

I prefer the 'someone up there needs by boot up their ass' line.

Jesus, Shepherd is both a complete fucking badass and the smoothest pilot in this galaxy.

Keith David had one of the most badass movie lines ever, in The Quick and the Dead. Someone asked his character how to spell his last name. His reply, in a totally badass Keith David voice was "Correctly."'

I caught Pitch Black again last night on cable.

Keith David can make even a holy man sound badass.
There is my God, Mr. Riddick!

    Let's see what IMDB says...

    Planescape: Torment - Vhailor
    Gargoyles - Goliath
Spawn (both bad live action and good animated) - Spawn

... okay I'll just stop there, since IMDB lists over 170 paying gigs since 1980.
