Yeah...how AMURIKAH America is usuallly depends on where you're vvisiting

I guess Boston was more "BOSTOOOON" than "AMERICA" though. Arizona was fairly interesting, I was in Tucson which has a pretty strong left counterculture. Some friends were wild pro-Warfare anti-socialists, and some were spending their lives utterly perplexed as to why people thought that way.

Yeah let's not make people think Boston is the same kind of "AMERICA!" that someplace like, say, Texas is. Boston is more like "You're walking through the history of the birth of our country! Check out these sites of where we fought the redcoats and sewed the seeds of independence!"

It's not at all the kind of "AMURIKAH!" where they glow with pride over the way they stomp on the non-Christians or own like 50 light machine guns and spout jokes about France or some shit.

In elementary school us Canadian kids learned about some First Nations practices and that we did Terrible Things to them, without much elaboration.

It took a college class before they actually gave some details.

90% of the natives in British Columbia died to European diseases. 90%! We (mostly) weren't even trying to kill them off at that point and we still managed it somehow!

Now I know why people were scared of moon germs when the astronauts came back in the 60s.

It's more 90% of natives everywhere. One of the reasons why the east coast was so hospitable to new people (and a whole bunch of place names have brook, field etc in their names) is because the land had already been cultivated and worked, it's just that most of the people who had lived there were gone.

the vast majority of said first nation people died without ever seeing a white person - you know, the origin of the virulent plagues

turns out they had a sophisticated trade network going on, which allowed the diseases to spread so effectively

I think the predator was the only one from that movie who didn't get a job in politics.

Kind makes me sad because his "hunt humans for sport" platform is something I could get behind

Even Sonny Landham, the actor who played Billy, ran for governor of Kentucky. He was so crazy that a body guard followed him around, to protect the rest of the cast from him.

Watching Orange is the New Black has me thinking about prison a lot.

Overall I'm really glad that I've never been but there's almost nothing else going on in our country that makes me madder than the state of the prison system.

basically, ask a guard where the gang zones are so you don't get stabbed, find your ethnic groups zone, introduce yourself and ask the rules, don't break them and don't piss people off

done, you are now very likely to not get stabbed or raped ever

I've never been in prison but one night I was in the holding cell right before seeing the judge. This one guy is pretty distraught and flustered about the whole thing. The officer retrieves him to go see the judge and as he gets up this kid says, "hey"

    The guy looks back.

    "Don't drop the soap!"

Now this kid is one of those shitheads you see all the time. A high self-promoter, backwards hat, expensive clothes. A malicious grin that signifies he's trying to hide a perpetual smile born from his own insecurity.

This old man looks at him. A thick piece of leather with a shaved head and covered in black, bleeding tattoos. The kid makes eye contact and nods, as if to say, "you know what I'm saying, right?"

"You think you're funny?" The old man says. The smile on the kids face barely breaks before the old man retorts, "shut the fuck up."

And the kid did exactly that. With the added perk of staring at the floor for the rest of the night.

History is best when taught about subjects rather than time periods, I think

That way you don't get the splitting up of the past into discrete chunks which is very inaccurate

It teaches kids that there is a continuity of history which is closely connected and also gives more useful skills when it comes to actually studying the subject

If we're going to have a ridiculous competition between Arnold and Ventura, I'd say Ventura's got his work cut out for him.

Arnold nearly had an animated action show, just to throw out an example.
