    Soft touch is good.

If we are kidnapping someone maybe we should build the covert entrance so as not to march her in the front door?

Also, science robots give income and science, so we should do that.

So let's talk long term. First we should pick up the GERTY rresearch helper bots. Then we need to start on working out how to make persuadatrons, that could be down physics, biology or psychology, but it's essential to our goals of huge crowds of civilians to act as bullet shields. Then on to Mars, because on Mars you can literally sell people fresh air.

So far, we're sending 6 agents to kidnap one person.

For some reason I can't stop laughing about this.

The Viking Corporation today claimed a new record today with the destruction of its IronySoft competitor in less then 3 weeks. The former Norwegian company claimed self-defense after agents stormed IronySoft's offices armed with heavy weapons. A 6 hour battle followed, after which IronySoft's headquarters were left ablaze and by morning there was nothing but ash left-standing.

Anti-corporate activists are outraged over the 100 or more employees believed to have died in the attack, however the US Government is accepting the claim by Viking that it acted only in self-defense against threatening market forces by IronySoft.

Local business figures have applauded the state governor's stance that non-interference with corporate matters allows the freehand of the market to be properly directed...

There was an element of joviality as the Ubicon agents waited for the company car. The board was wired as they got ready for their first corporate snatch mission and no chances were being taken.

Reconaissance and revealed the OpenSystems campus to be little more then the relic of think tank - an archival vault and some administration. Minimal staffing. 1 full-time scientist.

It the scientist who had drawn the attention. Dr Kaisa Salvay's public works showed he was at least twice as productive as any of the scientists on Ubicon's staff, and the research division was desperately looking for more workers. Near as any one could tell, the man was under-employed in his current position. He could have been poached through legal channels, but the risks of an open offer were just too great - once made, another corporations agents would no doubt descend and grab him. Better to get their first - or so the logic went.

The raid was louder then it was eventful. The pack of agents stormed the archives directly. One tackled Dr Salvay, another bagged him, and then 4 more took up defensive positions as startled librarians and janitors looked on. As quickly as they were in, they were out.

For his part, Dr Salvay seemed calm about the affair. On the ride back to Ubicon's headquarters he asked a few questions about the company, what it did, and seemed generally amenable to the salary situation. Human resources noted in his file that he was a compliant "enhanced recruitment" subject, but that they didn't expect any troubles with him.

Almost a month later, a separate group of agents converged on the wharf where the Tellex relief effort was ongoing. The special issue briefcase explosives they carried sailed past Tellex's detectors. Some time had passed since the previous operation, and the VIP traffic was beginning to pick up again. The rail lines were still being properly repaired from the initial explosion. Shrapnel damage along a pressurized tunnel with a mile of water above it was no joke.

The OO-1 always created a sense of urgency to missions. The briefcases were built locally, by the inventory stockists of Ubicon, but the trigger mechanisms were paired with strong cryptography directly to the board room. Executives were never far away, and the people who signed up as Agent's were always suspicious - stories abounded of misdirect missions where an agent who thought he was planting a bomb discovered he was the bomb - at least for the few microseconds before he became vapor.

Tellex had opted to use larger, sturdier hydrofoils since the last attack. The vehicle the agents targeted was almost twice as large, carrying almost 500 people. The mission profile called for the act to look like a failure of security against terrorism, not an accident. There was still sporadic violence in Casiawa these days, the corporate partnership issue remaining a hot button amongst a populace who were now finding themselves very much trapped beneath the waves.

As the hydrofoil got up to speed, no one noticed the 5 odd briefcases on the hull. The massive vehicle was rising up out of the water at over 40 knots when the first limpet-mine briefcase exploded. A passing news sky-van caught the tail end of the explosion that ripped the front foils off and send the vehicle temporarily sailing upwards...only to come crashing down into the water, subnking the top face of its bow. As the hull began to buckle, multiple precision placed explosives caused a primary failure and the hydrofoil broke in to. People and cargo could be seen being thrown forwards into the water off the foredecks in footage which would be replayed repeatedly that day in the local news.

For the rest of the quarter it was believed that Tellex would somehow discover Ubicon's involvement, it was a quiet month leading into the next board strategy meeting. Ubicon enjoyed even more public approval then it did before, with an agent and a few employees making a big show of Ubicon securing the rail-link as repairs were finished.

In the wake of the Tellex sabotage, Casiawa Council reacted even more positively to the official overtures by Ubicon to share silico-peptide development initiatives. Ubicon's board was invited to tour the city under the Mediterranean sea as a gesture of good faith, with private suggestions that the robotic expertise of the company would find ample application in perfecting the high-pressure biological synthesis.

    Agent Activities
You can perform individual actions against any contacted corporation.

    GUARD <campus department>
Normal security duties around the campus require alert guards to prevent sabotage, reconaissnace and ward off attacks. The presence of executive agents puts employees minds at ease.

    e.g. GUARD Manufacturing

    RECON <corporation>
Any contacted organization can be reconoitored to acquire additional information about it. Reconaissance can help plan further missions, or improve the odds of success in other endeavors.

    PR
Send agents to act as volunteer security for passengers and repairmen around the Casiawa undersea rail link.

    THREATEN <organization>
Send agents to threaten a corporations employees and executives. Grants a small chance of recruiting new staff on the spot.

    ASSASSINATE <organization>
Send agents to remove elements of a corporations work force. Will greatly alarm corporations and the public, but reduces the size of security responses and raises the chance of other operations succeeding through demoralization.

    HEIST <organization> <amount>
Send agents to steal funds from an organization. Difficulty scales with volume as a function of totals. Corporations in debt will be robbed of their quarterly profits.

    SABOTAGE <organizaton>
Further disasters to the Tellex vehicle fleet may help push Casiawa your way.
Burning down OpenSystems archives will probably put them out of business entirely.

    DISCOVER
Exploring the reachable areas of the world will allow contacting new organizations.

    KIDNAP <organization>
Attempt to kidnap a scientist from another corporation, and put them to work in your own labs. The scientific community has become surprisingly accustomed to this manner of recruitment.

    ESCORT
Deploy an agent as a personal escort of the Casiawa undersea city. This will raised Ubicon's PR profile and lead to new revenues, but will antagonize the Tellex Corporation greatly.

Just a reminder, Tellex is super watchful right now and worried about further sabotage. Unless we get a really good roll and a lot of agents, I don't see how a sabotage will get through without Casiawa finding out we blew them up.

But assassinations, that's just business. Might be good to change sabatouers to killers this round.

zekebeau invalid action request. Not counted.

In response to the positive news about Casiawa, the board of Ubicon planned a bevy of publicity events for the coming quarter. Or at least, those board members who bothered to show up did. With only 3 active voters, including 1 newly onboarded member, there was little depth in numbers to agent operations for the quarter.

It was perhaps with some irony then, that the new executive was the only one who correctly noted that Ubicon had thusfar been getting far too lucky. Tellex were bigger and older - they could and would push back just as hard.

Perhaps the only positive result of the quarter was Ubicon HQ itself still hadn't fallen under attack. That couldn't be expected to last much longer with the way things would turn out.

The quarter's disasters began with a simple public relations exercise, of the type that had been done fairly commonly by now Ubicon's agents. An agent showed up at the Casiawa repair site - an auspicious day as full speed activity was beginning again on the undersea train line. The board had felt suitably confident in the mission that the agent deployed without a personal sidearm, just one of the new ED-210 Security Attache's for protection and advertising. A PR slamdunk from every perspective...

The crowd that had been slowly pressing in on Agent Figgis had initially just seemed like transit bustle. But as the brush pasts became increasingly forceful, he began to suspect trouble. Who they were was never clear to Agent Figgis, judging from recovered EyeScope footage but the ensuing gun battle was depressingly one-sided. The ED-210 drone fired 1 shot, and then was hit and completely disabled. Agent Figgis was subsequently stared down by a single gunmen and shot until dead. Ubicon's unstoppable, invincible - to the public - agents, had been put down by a single man with a YY-6.

    Public: 1 agents present.

    PR decreased to 38%

There was some good news as the quarter wore on however. Ubicon Dynamic' headquarters survived the month unscathed, and yet another sabotage team aimed at Tellex successfully blew up the last of their naval shipping assets effectively putting an end to Tellex's Casiawa relief effort. There were no signs that Tellex detected the team on the way in or the way out, and the briefcase bombs netted their highest casualty count yet. Even with the PR surrounding Ubicon endangering public safety, Tellex's PR was worse: the various news organizations delighted in belittling their security, their concern for the public, everything about them. Somehow, they were becoming public enemy number 1 even as Ubicon agents got away with literal murder.

The quarter also saw a new strategy employed for several agents: the assassin team. The board had little information on how exactly this strategem was implemented but the goal was simple - thin the ranks of your rivals staff and capitalize on their reeling from it later.

The 3 agent team which burst through the doors of the Meridian building had one simple objective: kill everyone in sight. And DO NOT shoot any scientists who could be useful. A hail of solid gunfire slammed into Meridian's employees. The team tore through the offices and EyeScope footage confirmed multiple solid hits on low level staff members. What it did not confirm was as many bodies as was expected. Out of almost 100 possible targets, Meridian's evacuation measures showed only 5 without vital signs by the end of the assault.

The analytics department was tasked with pouring over the footage to figure out what had gone wrong, and came up with a few suggestions. The key problem, as they saw it, was that there simply weren't enough agents, without powerful enough weapons, to kill any employees. The YY-6 was a decent self-defense weapon - it had a large capacity clip, rapid fire, and would put a man down for good with 3 decent shots by an average marksman. But civilians didn't stand their ground - they ran. There was a fixed time in building for agents to take them down, and that, it was theorized - called for a very different approach. A bigger approach. Area effect weapons, or heavy caliber ballistics or something. One of the team scientists with a biology background suggested that there were certain pathogens and gases which might be able to guarantee a higher killrate against unarmed targets - but, noted that Ubicon lacked the expertise in those areas at the moment.

Ubicon Dynamics assassin team kills 5 Meridian employees.
Meridian staffing levels reduced to 95.000000%
    Meridian alertness has increased.

The final disaster for the quarter was the long-await tour of Casiawa. Modern metallurgical techniques meant the city was one giant transparent dome beneath the ocean, pressurized to reduce the structural requirements. Only the newest board member of Ubicon opted for the expedition, and tensions were high as the light rail pulled in. Executive zekebeau's agents rode in the now refurbished car of SA Manly, and couldn't help but wonder if it was a message. All were happy that they hadn't been asked to carry documents in OO-1 cases - failsafe mechanisms being another use of the overpowered explosive charges.

With the dark blue of sea pressing in from above them, the Casiawa councillors explained in detail about the silico-peptide revolution that was coming. The scientific briefings would have to go back to the boys in the surface labs, but the punchline was that the age of the mind-interfacing cybernetics might be about to begin, and Casiawa would lead the way as the only seafloor city which would be able to mass-manufacture them for the consumer market.

"The ocean, you see!" exclaimed a councillor, "it forms the perfect pressure vessel. The right salinity, the minerals. A little iron seeding and presto! Silicon and biology become one!"

Later in debriefing Agent Smyth-Jones would speculate as to who the aggressors were affiliated with. He believed Tellex, though it was impossible to be sure. Casiawa had had plenty of violence. But the first bullet hit the enthusiastic councillor in the shoulder, and narrowly missed the excutive. Smyth-Jones didn't give the assassin a second chance with his return fire. EyeScope footage and executive testimony accounted for the short, vicious gun battle which ensued in close quarters. Smyth-Jones' partner agents were both killed by multiple bullets which went underneath their armor, as were the unknown assassins.

Publicly Ubicon somehow avoided blame for the event. Privately, Casiawa made it clear that they believed Ubicon's executives had been the target, not their councillors. Even with only a minor wound on their side, 3 months of relations and public outreach was destroyed by 15 seconds of gunfire and 5 dead bodies.

    PR decreased to 37%

With their leads dried up, and low level staff contacts not talking, Ubicon was going to need a new public strategy. One of the agents on the Meridian operation floated the idea of the moment: wipe out the Casiawa Council. It was written prominently on the executive whiteboard as an action item for the next quarterly meeting. Before it started someone else had added below it "how hard would an undersea city really be?"

    Agent Activities
You can perform individual actions against any contacted corporation.

    GUARD <facility>

    e.g. GUARD Manufacturing

    RECON <corporation>
Any contacted organization can be reconoitored to acquire additional information about it. Reconaissance can help plan further missions, or improve the odds of success in other endeavors.

    PR
Send agents to repair damage to Ubicon's profile regarding the recent public attacks. This might be a bad idea if other corporates are suitably desperate.

    THREATEN <organization>
Send agents to threaten a corporations employees and executives. Grants a small chance of recruiting new staff on the spot. Reduces corporations alertness and the probability of attacks.

Damage the reputation of an organization by causing accidents. Success chances greatly improved by equipping agents with sabotage-devices.

    DISCOVER
Exploring the reachable areas of the world will attacking new organizations.

    KIDNAP <organization>
Attempt to kidnap a scientist from another corporation, and put them to work in your own labs. The scientific community has become surprisingly accustomed to this manner of recruitment.

Gentlemen, it has come to my attention that we have a serious lack of firepower for our employees on the ground. I suggest we amend that pronto.
Security is paramount after all of our success was upended during the Casiawa escort debacle. Even though Tellex may not know who sabotaged their
ships, the mere fact that we are profiting from good PR from them is proof enough in this day and age to invite attack.

We have the troops and the robots on the ground, now we need to get them the power to enact our will out in the field.

Fully agree, we need to know Tellex's abilities. But the undersea city has clearly some great benefits or they wouldn't be fighting for it, so I think some recon there is also good. Find out how Tellex is keeping their loyalty despite their failures/sabotage.

Question to Game Master: Is it possible or probable to buy weapons and armor from other corporations that specialize in those areas? Obviously we don't want to use their drone tech because that's what we do, but being able to equip our agents with market rate weapons could give us a much needed competitive front (and something else to spend cash on). Obviously we wouldn't get Ares' Predator MkV pistols(that's for internal use at the moment), but I'm sure they have a bunch of MkIII's or MkIV's that they'd sell.

This is a thing which will become possible. But Ubicon is a young corporation with inexperience team leads at every level, and high level arms deals require certain improvements to it's management.

Question for game master- what happened to the other stuff we could build, like the security guard dormitories and the sentry guns? Also, how does the corporate inventory work? Can we equip agents with both an ED-210 and a handgun? Does each board member only receive 1 ED-210?

You equip any item exactly once. Multiple items can be equipped up to the limit (3). Behind the scenes at the moment the techtree is changing just a little, but the security dormitories need a recruiting office. The guns should have been there - I'll put them back in for the next round.

All your agents can have ED-210s if you want but there will be tradeoffs later due to the item limit per agent (if you try to vote beyond the limit I'll just take the first X items regardless of what they are and equip those).

Also remember, the ED-210 might just not be a very good robot. Your company doesn't have a strong tactical backgrouns to know these things begond EyeScope footage.

So, that means that Agent 006 can only have 3 items, which limits him to either the ED-210 or the OO-1 briefcase as optional devices in addition to his sidearm and ballistic vest. Right now, UD doesn't have a lot of optional items which lets us give every Agent a robot, but we might get some more useful stuff out of R&D which will force the Board to choose.

The vote limit means that Agent 006 gets his gun, vest, and robot, but 007 won't be able to take along a gun, vest, robot, and briefcase, and will only take along the first three.

    Is this correct?

Correct. There may be options in the future which allow you to increase the item limit.

A bunch of fixes to the combat system happened behind the scenes here. There is a mechanic change happening: campus buildings are now just buildings, and can confer bonuses to your organization. But they are geographically dispersed (which will be represented on a map when it becomes relevant).

4 Agents recruited for new board member NotoriusBEN

The quarter opened with the induction of a new board member "Captain" Marcus who promptly issued several orders to his signing bonus staff which parsed as meaningless gibberish. As a result, a pair of elite corporate agents spent 3 months in an undisclosed location still drawing company pay cheques.

The ongoing situation with Casiawa had been decided to require more information about the organization Ubicon was principally dealing with - the Casiawa council. Although it was a public entity, the council was effectively just another face of the corporate world - and could be surveilled and indeed treated like one.

The problem of course, was that Casiawa was an undersea city. It was difficult to access, and the council was not easily reached. Surface-wise though, a few bits of information were turned up - the Council had a testing facility top-side, staffed by a single full time researcher and a support staff. Moreover, members of the council appeared to routinely sit in board meetings at this surface base - which meant there was a window of vulnerability for intimation and subterfuge which had not previously believed to be present.

Another quiet quarter at Ubicon Dynamics' various departments was beginning to spook the agents tasked to it somewhat, and the employees as well. The staff were beginning to realize that the misfortunes that befell Ubicon's competitors were probably originating - at least as they believed in some small part - from Ubicon itself. But they never seemed to bounce back on Ubicon. And that was worth being concerned about. Rumor and opinion spread from staff to agents to the board itself that a maelstrom was coming - even if Ubicon agents were never detected, corporations lashed out randomly - and violently, frequently.

    Ubicon Dynamics: 5 agents present.
    Guard : 5 agents.

This sense carried over to the mission at Tellex for the quarter. Fully 9 agents were deployed to Tellex, and it was felt that in some way this was probably too many. When Tellex security looked a little too nosy, the call was made to clear out of the reconaissance mission, and the evacuation of surveillance posts was narrowly completed before military-grade explosives demolished several stories of the hotel the team had been operating out of.

No Tellex security ever gave chase, but it was clear this was a narrow miss from disaster. But not without a silver lining. Although the alert Tellex security responded quickly to the reconaissance mission, they only succeeded in detecting that Ubicon's agents had already turned several mid-level managers with little more then vague threats to their families and loved ones.

The Tellex response was not an understanding one - contract termination could mean many things. In this case it meant Tellex removed fully 2% of suspected compromised staff members, but their skills did not show up in the locally available workforce later.

The mission at Oberon, with a smaller agent team, was far more successful. The Oberon corporation was a mid-sized manufacturing concern for the consumer appliance market. Tangentially related to robotics technology, but definitely close enough that they could be perceived as a market threat in the near future. Consumer companies were dangerous: their expertise at coralling low skill workers frequently gave them plenty of moving power when they decided to enter a sector. Their research team in particular was notably dangerous - with only 4 lead scientists they were almost matching the output of Ubicon's larger staff. The cash reserves of the company were also notable - holding no currency at all, but also no debt, they would be an enormous risk for launching theft missions.

The final business of the quarter was general. After much debate Ubicon finally added a company owned helicopter to its holdings: the TR-91 series was a superb acquisition. Ethanol fuel cells with fully electric propulsion made it quiet, while stealth construction allowed unrestricted airspace movement.

The Ubicon agents who spent 3 weeks driving around the country side cursed when they finally returned from their official scouting mission. They had certainly turned up a few new competitor firms, and a deeper understanding of the local lay of the land had created some interesting new possiblities in dealing with the public. But it all would've been a lot easier from the air.

Despite their grumbling, of particular note the agents had turned up something important - the anarchists who had launched their attack on Ubicon's headquarters did not appear to be interlopers. The agents returned with a discovery that out in the sparsely populated areas of Southern France, a powerful anti-corporate movement had formed - the Human Institute.

You can perform individual actions against any contacted corporation.

    GUARD <facility>
Normal security duties around the corporate facilities require alert guards to prevent sabotage, reconaissance and ward off attacks. The presence of executive agents puts employees minds at ease.

    e.g. GUARD Manufacturing

    RECON <corporation>
Any contacted organization can be reconoitored to acquire additional information about it. Reconaissance can help plan further missions, or improve the odds of success in other endeavors.

Damage the reputation of an organization by causing accidents. Success chances greatly improved by equipping agents with sabotage-devices.

    DISCOVER
Exploring the reachable areas of the world will allow attacking new organizations.

    KIDNAP <organization>
Attempt to kidnap a scientist from another corporation, and put them to work in your own labs. The scientific community has become surprisingly accustomed to this manner of recruitment.

Gentlemen, it has come to my attention that we should be investing in security. Unless more board members devote more agents to security, we are practically laid bare to our enemies. Giving some thought to research Ms. Mojo may be onto something with psychology. If not in military applications, we can use the data researched to help us create better autonomous systems for our robots and drones.

That was a close call with Tellex. I still think we need to get more info on them. I will attempt to recon them again, but I will so with my own cell of agents. Other board members should apply their agents elsewhere.

Since we are dealing with corporations, I would think it easier to make deals with some of them.
I would think the Uruk hai weapons inc would be someone we'd want to establish relations with for better arms and armor. We should specialize in superior bots and drones

I apologize, fellow members of the board. Agent control at Lunar Industries Inc. was... different, and I was unused to Ubicon's handling protocols.

That being said, my vote is for an increased emphasis on our core product. We're highly dependent on our Public Relations department for increased cashflow, and this situation could change at any time. Advanced Teachable Robotics should help both our Immigrant and ED-210 product lines generate more revenue.

Two questions- a, what happened with the weapons manufacturing vote, and b, if things have a time of 0 quarters does that mean we can research multiple projects in one quarter?

You can't research multiple projects in 1 quarter. So stacking your research deck doesn't necessarily let you go faster at the moment.

The weapons manufacturing vote got eaten by my vote parser. You'll have weapons manufacturing next turn. Call it a temporary delay in concept actualization.
