The nacelles on the black version are canard-style, with the front end integrated into the saucer. And, yeah, you can see the clipping plane slanting from the inside to the outside of the saucer - it's the cruiser's nacelle just awkwardly cut in there.

Item upgrading. I was very worried they would go deep into pay to win territory here, since some MMOs have just obscenely monetized upgrading systems, but, well...

    TL;DR version:
Upgarde packs give TP and RP. TP is a straight up level bar that increases the items mk level up to XIV. RP increases the chance each upgrade of increasing quality as high as Epic (a new level above ultra-rare). Mk upgrades are guaranteed fixed goals, and quality upgrades are random, but become more likely with attempts rather than the sort of crap I'm used to seeing in F2P games.

Upgrade packs are craftable (right now on tribble they're basically *the* way to level crafting - cheaper than crafting an item, 10 minute timer, and almost as much xp as a 20 hour research project). On tribble they're currently dropping on elite difficulty standard content and in advanced/elite queues.

Could be better, but not awful (tentatively depending on how RP works). Also the upgrade pack crafting on tribble has basically fixed the R&D leveling thing.

Hrm. I am not a fan of the new ships, they're blocky and ugly. I am also looking to buy a cool ship and i dunno if these new level 60 ships change anything on that front. I don't want to buy the galaxy bundle and find it's made obsolete by the new ships and the level cap rising.

The best advice would be to not buy any ships now or for the foreseeable future. Until the other section type ships, unless intelligence is really what you're gonna want, and fleet versions of the tier 6 ships are a thing.

Right now, they're not really obsolete. A 9-console tier 5 ship upgrades to be identical to a tier 6 ship minus one boff power, and a fleet ship upgrades to minus one boff power but plus one console and +10% hull/shields. There will be tier 6 fleet ships with those pluses and the extra boff power, but supposedly not at launch.

The big thing that keeps upgraded tier 5 ships in the running is versatility. With only 8 tier 6 ships, half of which are Fed, there's just not a lot of niche coverage with tier 6 ships. They're in the same position that the Odyssey and Bortasqu were back when they were the only 10 console ships - technically superior, but not covering most roles. They never really broke out of that until 90% of other ships just got a 10 console version and took away the "technically" part.

I'd wait until we have the Guardian-class cruiser stats on the Galaxy bundle. The description of it is as a traditional Starfleet cruiser (so probably no hangar and no cannons) but "versatility" could mean a lot of things, like "tac LTC" and "4 tac consoles," both of which are things the Galaxy-X really wishes it had.

Here's something fun... At level 56, NPC frigates on elite difficulty have almost as much hp as level 50 elite battleships of the same faction. I had a Malon frigate eat my entire alpha strike without losing a shield arc... then pop RSP and hazard emitters and wipe it back out. I figured it was just Malon, they're bulkier than Voth ships but without the invincibility shields. Then I tried the same thing on a Kazon ship that has no special powers, and barely dented its shields with a 30k beam overload.

This is how you fix power creep.

Edit: After dropping to normal, the crazy power curve seems limited to elite. Repeating a mission where I dealt with three 175k frigates I run into battleships with less and frigates with 60k or so that pop to a good beam overload. Getting battleships topping out at 200k, which is a far cry from the 450-500k Hazari fuck-yous I was running into on elite.

Edit 2: There are not enough facepalms for this screenshot.

Yeah, they should have thought of that before bringing Neelix back.

Also, after meeting him on the Kobali homeworld, Harry Kim looks a fucking LOT like Kim Jong Un. As a nice touch, though, even though he's the main allied contact in the zone, he deferred to players in dialog rather than giving orders, even asking permission to speak out of turn. In one conversation, you can even tell him no. It makes him talk a lot more, but at least you tried.

Shipwank! Just in case the 4:2:2 ratio didn't make sufficiently clear that Feds are getting way more ships as always, a new tier 6 ship was added to the Operations Pack making it 5:2:2.

Cryptic's new LCARS thing for blog images is apparently integrated into the images just to ruin these shipwank posts of mine.

But, yeah, we kind of knew this was coming, and their explanation is... Not the worst it could be. The specifications of the original were recovered from the ruins of Species 116 and recreated to play with the whole particle synthesis thing.

Now HERE'S some proper shipwank. Sneak peak at the Guardian-class Cruiser:

Resembles Probert's Ambassador from the Ships of the Line calendars, mixed with some Odyssey stylings in the nacelles and the sweeping V shape on the saucer.

Apparently this is either not the awkward top-heavy ship briefly seen in the last FE, or it's seen a lot of design iteration.

All the non-intel ships seem to be in the default styles Cryptic uses for each faction. Now it's just waiting for that Romulan ship, which looks like it could be pretty awkward looking.

Also, major tribble spoiler on the "real" big bad:
The Vaadwaur don't work for the Iconians, they've been taken over by the Bluegills, who actually appear as an enemy group.

I have to say, this was a really big shock to me. I figured with seasons 8 and 9 both being departures from the Iconian storyline, and the big Iconian reveal in the last FE, that they'd take a more central role in Delta Rising, and the Vaadwaur's similar history makes them a no-brainer as a Servitor. But, nope, they dug out the abandoned original form of the Borg and brought it back.

Kudos on you, Cryptic, just a big ol' gold star. Unless the level 59 mission pulls an M Night Shyamalan twist and it turns out that the Vaadwar are enslaved by the Bluegills who are enslaved by the Elachi who are enslaved by the Iconians because.... just... goddamnit it's going to do that isn't it? The Elachi were in the trailer, they've got to be in here somewhere, right?

Everything's very tac heavy. Though I guess with two LTC stations, that's a lot easier to do than it used to be.

I'm getting worried about the Aelahl's looks, though. This picture isn't too bad:
    7246a0af39f7a683c0a8e76a82a80c961411409135.png

But it's hard to see how goofy the wings look from this angle (the way the top wings join the hull at the back, while the bottom wings join it just behind the neck), and the other two pictures are of its trait and console powers and don't show the ship.

It... kind of feels like Cryptic doesn't want us to get a good look at this one, which makes me worry.

Still, stat wise it's pretty sexy. A warbird cruiser with a decent turn rate. Probably on the smaller side, too, but 1000 crew is still a hefty ship. I don't mind huge, though, as long as it doesn't come with immobile like the Ha'apax.

Honestly the look of the Aelahl doesn't bother me. Maybe that will change once I get a look at it from other angles, but this screenshot and the concept art certainly appeal to me. Plus that automatic warp shadow ability when it cloaks sounds like it could be fun.

She's pretty good looking from the back as well! Really like the nacelle design, but I wish they had more ships with the Thunderchild-style ones.

Yeah, I actually like the design of the back portion of it's hull. Makes me think of a galaxy class ship with a hull that is more proportional to the size of its saucer section, and the nacelles actually look better to me from this angle than they did in the previous screenshots. Also, is it just me, or are those some sort of mini-nacelles on the wings connecting the nacelles to the hull?

They are. In the earlier teaser pictures, I thought those were impulse engines (a few ships have blue impulse glows instead of red in the shows, and STO has picked up on that a few times), but in the newer shots you can see there's red impulse glows on each side of it, and the red glow visible from the front isn't just shining "over" the pylons, but at the front.

Dev blog is up for the post-50 leveling system, and... Well, I like it.

Goes past level 60, you keep gaining exp and filling the level bar, you just don't gain levels. When you've maxed all the specializations available* all new exp you gain is converted into dilithium.

    http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/7007273

*- at launch, that's 60 level bars worth of exp (~2.5 million after the 350k or so needed for 60), based on some assumptions that I can't test until the system is on tribble) for the one primary and two secondary paths - you can only have one of each active at a time, but can switch. Like reputations, this is a moving goalpost, since they're planning to add more of these in future seasons.

Post-50, mission exp is tanked, too, so this comes the hard way: Killing shit. Killing shit exp was not nerfed, and was actually buffed on advanced and elite (except fighting battleships on elite feels like giving yourself a root canal while chewing ice cubes).

I suppose if WoW is going to steal Doffing and starbases (at least at a personal level) then it is only fair to steal Paragon levels from Diablo :)

I hadn't really noticed those little nacelles on the back of the Guardian, seems a little odd, but I think other ships have them? Maybe the Vesta...or I am just thinking of something else.

Item upgrade is going live tomorrow (only partially - you can upgrade as far as mk XIII and ultra-rare, XIV and epic are gated until the expansion), and they're doing three weekend events in a row to give a free head start.

Each weekend for the three weeks until the expansion, there'll be a contact on ESD/Quo'nos/NR Command, who'll give you a batch of free tech upgrades and a major accelerator for free.

The cynic in me sees this and thinks Cryptic is trying to get us to blow some dilithium before the expansion. The rest of me is arguing about whether I should upgrade my DBB or my cannons first.

Yes. It basically negates the lobi upgrade. Everything from reps R&D or holdings, all randomized stock loot, all unique mission rewards, most level-scaling items (the automatic scaling stops at mk XII). No kits or kit modules, no hangars.

Hmm... i wonder how much the upgrade from XI to XII will cost... will it be comparable to 200 lobi? probably not... oh well, although i could've brought the ground set for the costume unlock instead but thats apparently going to be sold in the future anyway...
