In Japan, ESC is the common "quit immediately to desktop button."

So this is less a console/PC culture clash, and more a Western/Eastern culture clash.

But why would that be a button you want? I want to take that function and rebind it to absolutely nothing.

Boot Hill Heroes is up for sale on Steam. I'm hoping it's good because I backed it on kickstarter. It's a wild west themed retro RPG.

The daily is FRACT OSC, which I have heard is good, and have also heard it's best to go into it with as little knowledge as possible.

Most PC games I've played have the in-game menu as tab and the options menu as escape. So when I want to look in my inventory or pick some spells I hit tab. If I want to change graphic settings I hit escape.

    It has become ingrained now.

I'm rewatching Aliens. SE, of course. For all the "action movie" talk, it is worth bearing in mind that, at an hour and seven minutes in, we have not yet seen an alien. (Besides a facehugger in a jar.) That's actually longer than Alien goes before showing you the xeno, although of course Aliens is a significantly longer film.

But, ye Gods and little fishies, it's still so good. Tense as hell.

    Also, Apone is awesome.
"We've got tactical smart missiles. Phased plasma pulse rifles. We've got knives, sharp sticks..."

Sadly it took me ten years to get @mrs croaker‌ to watch Aliens, so it's going to be a while before we see it again. Alien on the other hand, is moving rapidly up my viewing queue.
That was Hudson. Who is also awesome for different reasons. "Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you!"

Oh I know, I was just going with it.
Apone wins for "Look into my eye"

Now I want an Aliens game too. Not AvP mark you, which is a good game, but a unique property. Is that too much to ask?
    "Stow that shit, Hudson!"

Yeah, it's sad there hasn't been an Aliens game for years and years.

    Right?

I just... by the time you're playing a porn game you either need to a.) secure that room or b.) you're okay with it. There's no way somebody is walking in on you and you're hitting the escape key to casually be like "Spreadsheets, right? That's why I'm pantsless right now. Excel is just, whoo, you know? God it's hot in here. Are you hot? I'm hot." and have everything be okay.

I guess the escape straight to desktop is quicker than most games nowadays where you open menu, select quit, game asks ARE YOU SURE?, say yes, puts you at start menu, select exit to desktop, asks again ARE YOU SURE?, select yes, hope game actually closes (some games like to add an extra step by adding a PUSH BUTTON TO CONTINUE at start screen).

Of course you could just tab out and force close it, but who has time for that? :P

    I actually would have expected enter . . .

Why? Your hands are nowhere near the enter key in any modern PC control setup. Escape is at a nice spot where it's not close enough to WASD to accidentally hit it but it's just a short jaunt away if you need to pause quickly (like if your phone is ringing or the cat just broke something or whatever).

Specifically for console ports, and based on button labels, Enter is the best analog for Start (which should have been relabled "menu" years ago).

Left-hander. My movement is usually with the arrow keys not WASD, if I am using a keyboard at all as I am using my left hand to control the mouse.

I prefer to use a controller, even if that means using a game profiler program. But if the game is something mouse-based, like a 4X game, I usually use the on-screen options menu button instead of a keyboard one. The keyboard is usually used for typing and not much else.

I give the Sega Master System props for getting this right nearly 30 fucking years ago by labelling the button Pause.

Of course, it put it on the console, not the controller, but meh, details.

Ah, yeah, make sense if you're a lefty. I do find it a bit strange that you prefer controller, since I quite enjoyed the jump to the keyboard and mouse when I switched to PC gaming about a year ago, but that's just a personal preference thing. Dual sticks just feel so clumsy to me when compared to the mouse.

Well, to be fair, as I mentioned before 95-97% of my gaming since the Atari 2600 has been console based. So always an abstract controller of some kind. Thus the Mouse makes more sense to me than the keyboard.

Hell, the Wii controller with Nunchuck feels more intuitive to me than KBAM, and that shit is honestly esoteric in most simple platform games . . .

You left-handers who do mouse with your left hand: do you prefer a left-handed mouse, or an ambidextrous one? Or even a right-handed one although that would seem weird? And do you switch the buttons?

I was left to do what I wanted as well. It just turned out that for some things I preferred my dominant hand, like throwing or any kind of fine control, and other things I preferred my right, such as using a mouse. Mostly using a mouse.
