My view is that the greatest thing about RPGs is that they give you the opportunity to create a character who has a real existence in his or her world, as opposed to the pure surrogate for the player featured in a game like Halo or Mario. To this end, I prefer games that are stat dependant because when the PC's actions suceed or fail based on his stats that makes him seem like a real part of his world, as opposed to an action RPG like Oblivion where the most important determinant in the success of failure if the character is the Player's skill with the controller (so that a highly skilled archer can miss all the time if the player is bad at aiming, for example). For me, nothing breaks immersion like hwving a character who is supposed to be good at something based on state fail a lot or succeed all the time at things he is bad at based on his stats, in each case because I am good (or bad) with a controller or mouse.
