    ug, I have...become an asshole :(

I just had a conversation with a friend in which I had a fucking answer for everything and reasons to back up my answers...

    I am a horrible person :(

nah, don't kick yourself too hard.

Sometimes people want answers and sometimes they just want someone to listen.

Who knows? Maybe they appreciated it.

she was pretty irritated by the end of the conversation, and I can't blame her...she wasn't asking for help, I was just one long source of unasked for advice

So I'm playing DA Origins, because.

    And I'm not a mage.

Why would anyone ever do this? Not using magic is the worst.

I don't even get to be a blood mage eventually!

Blood mags is both OP and really breaks the narrative. Everyone should want to kill you the first time you use blood magic.

That part acutally bugged me in DA2.

Nobody acknowledges that you're a mage. Walking around in a robe with a staff. Casting spells everywhere. Humming "I'm a mage, I'm a mage, fuck you I'm a mage" under you breath.

    No one notices.

applying this to the specific instance, it means that the constant stream of entertainment penetrating all our orifices 24/7 isn't due to individual expressions of psychic pain but is instead a method of delivering edibles (made by the cultural elite) to those whose hunger has been created by other organs of the elite

a more reasonable person might explain it using both (top-down and bottom-up creation of demand), because they are integrable to a point

“To me, at least in retrospect, the really interesting question is why dullness proves to be such a powerful impediment to attention. Why we recoil from the dull. Maybe it's because dullness is intrinsically painful; maybe that's where phrases like 'deadly dull' or 'excruciatingly dull' come from. But there might be more to it. Maybe dullness is associated with psychic pain because something that's dull or opaque fails to provide enough stimulation to distract people from some other, deeper type of pain that is always there, if only in an ambient low-level way, and which most of us spend nearly all our time and energy trying to distract ourselves from feeling, or at least from feeling directly or with our full attention. Admittedly, the whole thing's pretty confusing, and hard to talk about abstractly...but surely something must lie behind not just Muzak in dull or tedious places anymore but now also actual TV in waiting rooms, supermarkets' checkouts, airports' gates, SUVs' backseats. Walkmen, iPods, BlackBerries, cell phones that attach to your head. The terror of silence with nothing diverting to do. I can't think anyone really believes that today's so-called 'information society' is just about information. Everyone knows it's about something else, way down.”

DFW had some serious issues and i actually disagree with his thesis here due to my subscription to cultural elite theory

i agree with him in part, in that smartphones are a great way to make absolutely sure you don't reflect on the essential meaninglessness of your life while you're on the bus

but the horror of Muzak and tedious dullness is not that

at least if you're grappling with existential horror, there is a kind of authenticity and nobility to it, a romantic struggle with the defining questions of human existence

tedium prevents you from doing that without letting you experience anything actually diverting or pleasurable instead

it traps you in a horrible purgatory of existentially oblivious dissatisfaction

will i like dragon age if i loved mass effect but generally don't dig rpg's

Dragon Age: Origins is an RPG's RPG. It feels like a refresh on what they were trying to do with Baldur's Gate back in the 90s, in their own world, with some KOTOR game sensibilities.

Dragon Age 2 feels like fantasy Mass Effect 2-3. Defined character with a set one-word name that everyone calls you by, varied romance options, highly narrative-driven.

Dragon Age: Inquisition looks to be taking the best parts of those two fairly different games and making something better than either one. And it looks to be MASSIVELY long.

So from a $ to time ratio, its a good investment.

Everyone says that DA:O was a modern day BG (including Bio) but I think that is really not correct. It shares superficial similarities (tactical camera is similar to the view of IE games, you can pause and issue orders to all party members, including move orders, which is a big break from KotoR or NWN1, there is party banter, which is admittedly vastly superior to the banter in BG1 or even BG2) but the feel of the games could not be more different. BG1 is a game about playing as a low level adventurer exploring a huge, dangerous world filled with secrets and locations of interest. It is pretty light on story. DA:O is essentially a political story based game with easy combat lacking in danger and small, pretty linear locations. There is very little freedom in terms of exploration. It's really just the order that you choose, unlike in BG1 where you can set out in a direction and just keep going.

This doesn't mean that DA:O is a bad game. Not by any stretch. But it is not really a spiritual successor to BG, so much as it is a competent but limited example of modern Bio design that happens to borrow some aspects of infinity engine games.

    well

i don't really have another option there

    that's when he's available

it's that or go to the emergency ward, which is kind of dumb since i'm not really having a medical emergency?

like yes, seizures suck and they're awful but provided i do not injure myself in the act of having one they are not in and of themselves life threatening at this juncture and as a result do not represent a clear and present medical emergency

i can go to a walk-in clinic and see a walk-in doctor who is not my doctor and doesn't have my medical records, which allows him to go.... yes, you sure are having seizures, that sure is... a problem? here, take some ativan

oh, you already have a prescription for ativan

    hrm

like basically this is something i need my GP to refer me to a specialist for which i can't really expedite

a specialist needs to look into this issue and figure out what the dick

to be frank the grim reality is i probably need to come off the Wellbutrin and that is like, almost without a shadow of a doubt the cause here or at least a very major factor

and i am responding to this idea like a fussy toddler kicking his feet because Wellbutrin is basically the only anti-depressant that has worked on me without mondo awful side-effects like psychotic episodes or colossal weight gain and shit so

so coming off it is terrifying and i don't have a psychiatrist right now, my previous psychiatrist is in Ontario and i haven't acquired a new one since moving to BC (although my new GP is trying to hook me up with that) and i can't come off the Wellbutrin without being on some kind of other functional anti-depressant, that would be badtimes

so i'm in a shitty place on this entire issue
