"Get the Rope," The Knick. Vital, vital television. Horrifying, tense, enlightening, inspiring. Television at its absolute best.
Favorite Television Episode of the Year, Comedy:
"Pancakes, Divorce, Pancakes," Review. No contest. A masterwork.
Favorite Album:
Deep Fantasy, White Lung. Focused, mile-a-minute punk, with thought-provoking songs and amazingly unique guitar riffs. All killer, no filler.
Best Album By A Horny R&B Ghost Trapped in a Computer:
LP1, FKA Twigs.
Best Soundtrack to Some Rather Trying Times, Culturally:
RtJ2, Run the Jewels. This record also has the best song title of the year, "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)"
Favorite AAA Game:
Dragon Age: Inquisition. It's buggy as hell and has some nitpicky flaws, but the writing and characters are top-notch. And it's the first big, meaty video game the ladyfriend's ever gotten into, which certainly earns it some bonus points.
Favorite Indie Game:
Never Alone. Gorgeous art and animation, amazing interviews with native voices, and a wonderful look at a culture that a lot of people haven't been exposed to. Beautiful game.
Favorite Book:
Not for Nothing, Stephen Graham Jones. 2nd-person Texan noir, that manages to wring equal parts pathos and commentary from its odd conceit. A weird, fun read. (Note: I actually haven't read too many books that came out this year; most of my reading this year has been older books, research, or both. This is still a great lil book, though)
Favorite Movie:
We Are the Best! Probably the punkest movie of all time. That it's also super adorable and a universally relatable of life in 7th grade is just gravy. (Note: I also haven't seen a lot of 2014 film, yet. I tend to catch most of the "prestige" releases when my friends loan me screeners, so I'll be seeing a lot of stuff come January/February. This movie is still a massive delight.)

One of my favorites. That was the one that got me into him, back in the day.
I found out yesterday that he snuck out two books this year I hadn't even heard of. The man is sickeningly prolific.

I don't actually know my overall favourite things for this year though, lots of cool stuff happened and I read and watched a bunch of fun things!

I'm really impressed with how breakneck it is
I feel like it's kind of a genre book for people who've already read the rest of the genre books
So when it gets to a scene that you've seen before because you read books about rogue cops and serial killers before, it can choose to just skip it
You know what happens, and nothing changes here
And it allows it to keep up its pace by ditching all those boring scenes
I don't think I'm articulating that very well, but like, I feel you spend the first section as exhausted and fucked up as Jim Doe because of the way it is written
And really the only reason I read that as soon as it was published was because one of my best friends wrote it

You will note I said "Favorite" :P
That's actually a recurring (and great!) facet of Stephen's writing. He trusts his audience implicitly, including trusting that they've read a shitload of stuff before. He always skips over the boring, the staid. They hold no interest to him.
