Pre-PAX SOUTH Lobby game night @ Hilton Placio Del Rio - 1/22/15

s3prototypes3prototype Houston, TXRegistered User regular
edited January 2015 in PAX South
We have the OK from the Hilton Placio Del Rio I spoke to one of the floor managers and they are aware of our group.

Where: Hilton Placio Del Rio lobby. (200 South Alamo Street, San Antonio, TX 78205) https://goo.gl/maps/SJVLH
When: 1/22/15 @ 5-5:30 I'll setup shop around 5-5:30 with the games I have. We have the lobby bar (located on the first floor) then spill into the meeting space for us.

Here are the catch 22's....
- The bar area doesnt serve food, they suggest using room service or the local bars/restaurants and bring it in.
- The bar itself will stay open if people keep buying drinks. Bar normally closes at 10PM.
- Lobby area bar is open to us all night. We can stay after the bar closes.
- No gambling (I think that is a no brainer)
- Being good guests is critical to this event's welcome at the hotel. Don't be a dick.
- Please make every effort to game in the area they've set aside for us (listed above).
- If you get asked by the hotel staff to move, please be respectful and honor their request.
- If you are drinking alcohol or eating food around the games, please be careful. Some of these games cost $50-60 or more. Others are irreplaceable.

Food by the Hotel

Once Present at the Hotel
1. Your coordinators for the night JD (S3 Prototype) & jj4th. Let me know if you'd like to help.
2. If you've got a game and are looking for players, put the box top of the game vertically on your table. This is the universal sign for "I don't care who you are, please join us"
3. If you're looking to join a game, look for vertical box tops.

PLEASE BRING YOUR GAMES! Got a game you'd love to play? bring it with you. I'll edit this post, reply in the thread or PM me with games and I'll update the lists.

Is this is sign up kind of deal? Or is it cool to just show up whenever?

Count me in! I can bring Ascension if anyone is interested (base game only), or Cards Against Humanity, but I see that is already on the list. I'll be traveling light so I don't want to pack anything too be ... I need room to take cool stuff home!

What is the max occupency? If this is the only "official" Thursday night meet up I could see it turning into a huge gathering and get us kicked out because of fire hazards.

I know at other PAXes, the board game nights seem to happen every night in hotel lobbies. I only assume this will be the case here as well?

Count me in as well. I will bring Munchkin, King of Tokyo, Smash, Bang, and anything else I can find lying around.

@CptFancyPants‌ - I wouldnt turn down any gamer from having a fun night.
@Josh5890‌ - I said 25-30 to them. That was the scale of PAX EAST before and thats a much bigger event. Its lobby area so we may leak into the rest of the floor.
@koleypunch‌ - I assume every night. But I am only helming the PRE-PAX.

  • bartapbartap Registered User regular
I'm interested in coming, but wouldn't be able to show up until around 8/8:30 or so, but I can bring DC deck buidling game.

@s3prototype‌ - 25-30 is a gross underestimation. PAX East has never, ever been that small. I suggest you expect 50-100 for this first one.

hmm...the one ninja and I were hosting at the Long Warf was upwards of 30-50....I shall report back in a bit.

  • LexiconGrrlLexiconGrrl Registered User regular
True, Long Wharf is a little smaller, but it's also a secondary game night intended to be smaller than the huge one at the Westin. Since this is (ostensibly) the only official game night for this first PAX, you'll likely get way more people - somewhere between the two.

    Old Coot Question.

I have not heard of any of these games mentioned  . I'm going to Google em to check it out though. I have played D&D about 25 years ago but have only gamed on the PC since. Is their gonna be and D&D going on this or any other night? Also can a newbie like myself join up if there is? I need something to do at night to keep me from being walled up in my hotel room ordering porn and drinking all the pretty little plastic bottles of giggle juice!

The Westin one has been with an attached hotel though, and I don't think there was an organized game night for the first pax east (2010) nor for the second (2011), so it's possible that it might be smaller-ish? But yeah my initial reaction to 25-30 was "that seems small."

  • LexiconGrrlLexiconGrrl Registered User regular
This is a friendly group and people are always happy to teach a n00b. Don't be shy about joining a game! Don't spend your money on the minibar, spend it in the lobby, with other peeples and fun games!

Happily on Sabbatical. Don't bug me.

Yeah, I'm figuring attendance counts will be somewhere between the two nights at East. Hence the guesstimate of 50-100....

Geekdom apparently lost my e-mail. But the staff said they like our event and are going to get back to me with room information, so if the Hilton is too small, that could still work or work as a backup. Nothing definite yet, but the conversation was promising.

So either as a backup or overflow.

Echoing what other people say, our normal monthly game nights and weekday game nights around San Antonio are 25-30... and most if not all of the guys I know from those are going to Pax South... just the group that goes to Dragon's Lair on Thursday nights locally... could exceed 30 people. I've been telling folks 100 or more.

If I get the chance to go, which I'm still hoping I will, though not certain yet. I can definitely run the official D&D Next Candlekeep, I've done it before at Pax Prime (as a volunteer DM) and Pax East (on my own). Seats a group of up to six. But it takes about 2.5 hours so don't plan on doing that AND something else. If six people want to do it, and actually show up, and I am able to attend ( caveat caveat caveat ;) ) then I'll run one. Alternatively, if that doesn't work out, Kobold's Ate My Baby is quick, fun, and much easier than D&D for the un-initiated. I will also be running the occasional D&D game during Pax itself. Probably posting on whatever twitter hashtag ends up being used for D&D stuff.

Geekdom is confirmed as an overflow/additional space. I'll be setting shop up there along with most of the Geekdom game night folks. I can't remember what time I asked for (6pm or 7pm) but I will get back with that info. Just know that we now have confirmed space for up to 100 additional folks!

    Thanks for the reply.

My plane lands at around 3PM so by the time I get there, drop off luggage at hotel, find somewhere downtown to buy a box fan (seriously, I can't sleep without one :) ) get back, freshen up and get a bite to eat it will be well past 5 I'm sure. I'm hoping that the weather is nice there because I will be walking everywhere I go.

I hope to see everyone there!

Checking the weather history, for the last ten years it's been between 40-60 F here on January 23. So, warmer than it usually is at Pax East in Boston :)

I've played D&D for years and am a big electronic gamer. I can tell you, board games are a GREAT expansion of both of those hobbies. I can't always get together with my friends to play video games, but we set aside every Wednesday to play board games at a local game store. Don't feel bad about being a noob and not knowing what those games are. You have to start somewhere. Five years ago I had NO idea any of these even existed. Now I've played hundreds of games.

We're going to bring our usual giant tub-o-games so it will probably include:

    Castles of Mad King Ludwig
    Evolution
    Splendor
    Dominion
Cards Against Humanity (all expansions and then some)
Ticket to Ride (plus 1910 expansion)
    Rampage (maybe)
    Gloom
    Munchkin
    Flux
    Smashup (with 2 expansions)
    Lords of Waterdeep (plus expansion)

Generally not all of these fit in the box but we'll see what we can do.

You forgot to mention one other rule:
    - If you are drinking alcohol or eating food around the games, please be careful. Some of these games cost $50-60 or more. Others are irreplaceable.

Shamelessly stealing this from @s3prototype‌. Can you update the main post to also include something about this?

Where: Geekdom SA Event Center (131 Soledad St, San Antonio, TX 78205) - Map
    When: Jan 22, 2015 @ 6:00 I'll setup shop around 6:00 with the games I have.

The Geekdom event has been cancelled since we have more space at the Hilton now.

I don't want to trample on the original event, @s3prototype‌ worked hard to put it together. But I do feel we will need more space. The lobby to the hotel might be pretty full by 8pm.
