I think 6 Days at The Bottom of The Ocean deserves representation too. My fav Explosions song.
I just started listening to John Frusciante's solo stuff tonight.
I am very pleasantly surprised by it so far. It's all really just him jamming on a guitar, it's really something different from the Peppers. It's nice though. Kind of like Jack Johnson except with a bit more instrumentation. And that's a good thing.
I don't approve of your comparison to Jack Johnson, but as long as you're enjoying John Frusciantes solo stuff, that means I like you.

I am listening to the Ongoing History of New Music for the first time in a *long* time right now, and it's the early history of Radiohead this episode (lucky). They're playing something from off their first demo tape, and no word of a lie, it sounded like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! to me. I mean... I thought it was for a second. And yeah CYHSY always get compared to Talking Heads due to the vocals... but damn.
I called it: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! is the next Radiohead. Give them five or six years (the recording I'm hearing is from 1990 or 89)

Oh man, I just listened through The Crane Wife a couple of times and I really, really love it. I'm a big fan of the Decemberists, and although Picaresque blew me away, it was kind of outshined by Illinois that year. Also, I tend to like the style of Castaways and Cutouts more these days.
Crane Wife, however, freaking rocks. It's tough to say whether or not it'll have the lasting strength that C&C does to me, but it's simply a very well put together album. Christopher Walla did a pretty great job producing it.
Edit: Also, I still haven't checked out Tv on the Radio's new album. A lot of people seem like it, though. Is it that good?

I didn't think it was all that great. Wolf Like Me is amazing, and I really love it, but everything else is so forgettable. This seems to be the case with the other Tv On the Radio albums. Off of Desperate Youth, I only like Staring at the Sun and King Eternal. On the Young Liars EP, I only like Satellite.

Is the reason you don't like it maybe because it's a little different from the Decemberist's norm? I like The Perfect Crime because of the pretty much funk baseline. Meloy's repeating of "the perfect" gets a little old towards the end, but it doesn't ruin the song for me. I think the Crane Wifes are great, and that Sons and Daughters is really interesting and a great end song, even though it's overshadowed by #1&2 in my mind.
I've noticed that, as a whole, they seem poppier than normal, but I don't think it's a bad thing. What did you think of the Tain?
Also, I'll check Destroyer out. Is that one of the the New Pornographers' vocalists I hear? It is!

I think Sons and Daughters is the greatest song on the album.

I love the imagery of Sons and Daughters. It might be my favorite, too.
I guess as a fan it's hard not to correlate the label and experimentation, but I don't think that it's necessarily a bad thing. I'm enjoying the variety, if anything, and their traditional style songs are still there to bring it all together.

I saw TV on the Radio live earlier this year and they were fantastic, and that was before I had gone out and bought any of their albums.
EDIT: Anyway, something to continue this thread, how about that Mars Volta? New Drummer yes please. Blake quit after only 3 months and they've got a replacement who goes by the name of Deantoni Parks and he is ABSOLUTELY amazing, unfortunately according to "Jeff" who maintains his myspace he's only in the band for 3 weeks before a permanently replacement is sought out. My money is on Zach Hill but that's just me.
Before the first show he had ever played, he had only had 3 practise session with TMV, and their set lists with him (3 shows so far) have been Rapid Fire Tollbooth, A 45 min Jam then Viscera Eyes, and I've been hearing many MANY complaints about them but when I finally got my hands on these 3 bootlegs they sounded fantastic to me and Deantoni definatley has the style to be a permanent replacement. But that's just me. The Jam was fantastic but Viscera Eyes sounded like ass.
Cool stuff going on, which is nice since the end of this year is altogether pretty unremarkable for indie/alternative music.

Mixed feelings about this. They've gone off into "epic" territory and have all but completely lost the dancey, punky edge found in songs like Helicopter. There are some brilliant songs in the first half, like Hunting for Witches, Waiting for the 7.18, and Uniform, but the second half of the album gets all mellow and shoegazey, all synth layers and epicness. It's okay, but it's not what I was expecting from Bloc Party. This will probably take a while to grow on me.
The new Shins song is pretty great too, but they're also moving into some heavily produced, synthy territory.
Been hearing good things about the Swan Lake album (collaboration between Spencer from Wolf Parade, Dan from The New Pornographers and Destroyer, and Carey from Frog Eyes), which is good because usually these supergroups tend to be shitty, but I had a good feeling about this one.
Also I listened to Surfer Rosa for the first time today and it rocks so fucking hard.

That is my most-listened to song on Silent Alarm, easily. And a band's sound does usually evolve between albums... I mean, so many examples come to mind. Kasabian -> Empire. Naveed -> Clumsy. Morning Glory -> Be Here Now. The Bends -> OK Computer. Old World Underground -> Live It Out. Any Groove Armada...

I liked The Musics second album.
And I want to hear the new Bloc Party more from the description of it. Bloc Party are one of the only telecaster weilding post=punky type bands that I like, and thats mainly because of the amount of detail and experimentation theyve got going on.
Also, they're one of the few good bands I can name from north London.
I would just like to point out that earlier in this thread someone made the claim that the lostprophets are from Liverpool when in fact they're Welsh, from the back end of the valleys somewhere.
And they suck, they suck rock hard horses and would do anything to keep selling some albums
Try listening to Lightyear if you can find some of their stuff. They broke up a while ago but recently reformed for a tour so new things may be in the works...also they arent so alternative as sort of punky-ska-ish-with a bunch of other stuff thrown in there. Very worth listening to i reckon

I like Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven a lot more than f#a#infinity.
For Sigur Ros, I'd say Takk is a good place to start, it is probably their most accessible album.

Opinions on Rilo Kiley? I remember liking what I'd heard of them before. And hey, it has one of the kids from Salute Your Shorts.
My lady and I are into Rilo Kiley. I especially appreciate the way they genre-bend within their albums. I guess thats what qualifies them in my book.
Frankie likes them a lot. I think the lead singer is that girl from that 80s autistic video game movie The Wizard, which kind of elevates them IMO.
Rilo Kiley are a total mixed-bag. Many of the songs are complete awesome, but others are almost unlistenable. I have their second album, The Execution Of All Things, and their last album, More Adventurous. I like The Execution better overall, but "Does He Love You?", "Porions For Foxes" and "I Never" are amazing Jenny Lewis songs.
As a side note, Jenny Lewis has got to be one of the best female vocalists in indie/alternative music today. Up there with Fiest, Amy Milan and Neko Case. She is also a fantastic storyteller. Listen to her songs on The Execution and you may just swear that she's describing the highest highs and lowest lows of you life. She has a wonderful solo album and also sings back-up for Postal Service.
Some Cardigans popped up on my Pandora and I think I've fallen in love again. "I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer".

So the new Brand New (The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me).
Fucking excellent. By far their darkest album. Possibly one of the darkest CD's I've ever heard. Sowing Season is such an awesome song.
I really like The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. I liked it when I first heard it, but not as much as Deja Entendu. It's growing on me though, I just think there are times when the music is all too depressing. In the past they've had upbeat sounding songs that are very sad lyrically, like the second half of I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't. There's no break from the mood of the record. This isn't an overtly bad thing, just something I noticed. They've totally left the pop-punk roots behind.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just listened to the song Archers. It's exactly what the record needed.
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is a great indie pop band. With a fantastic name. I actually saw them perform at a local bowling alley- it was a great show, and the bassist almost hit me in the face with his bass when he came down to dance with us.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Doolittle and Bossanova are worth picking up as well, but Surfer Rosa is their best.
Thanks for bringing up Bloc Party, I was hoping to hear new stuff from them soon. the thing about them though, is that Silent Alarm was just so damn good that their second album is almost bound to be less good. Sort of like The Music, IMO. In any case, I can't download the leaked files so I have to go by your descriptions. If these are more songs like So Here We Are - I say bring it on! That is my most-listened to song on Silent Alarm, easily. And a band's sound does usually evolve between albums... I mean, so many examples come to mind. Kasabian -> Empire. Naveed -> Clumsy. Morning Glory -> Be Here Now. The Bends -> OK Computer. Old World Underground -> Live It Out. Any Groove Armada...

I liked The Musics second album.
And I want to hear the new Bloc Party more from the description of it. Bloc Party are one of the only telecaster weilding post=punky type bands that I like, and thats mainly because of the amount of detail and experimentation theyve got going on.
Also, they're one of the few good bands I can name from north London.
And they suck, they suck rock hard horses and would do anything to keep selling some albums
Try listening to Lightyear if you can find some of their stuff. They broke up a while ago but recently reformed for a tour so new things may be in the works...also they arent so alternative as sort of punky-ska-ish-with a bunch of other stuff thrown in there. Very worth listening to i reckon
My lady and I are into Rilo Kiley. I especially appreciate the way they genre-bend within their albums. I guess thats what qualifies them in my book.
So, the new Incubus album, Light Grenades, is pretty good.
So I'm getting my Christmas gift list together to give to the wife and I'm really jonsing to get some "new" stuff--new meaning discs I've missed over the last few years... albums I've wanted to pick up but just never got around to it. With that in mind, here's the list so far:

For Sigur Ros, I'd say Takk is a good place to start, it is probably their most accessible album.

Rilo Kiley are a total mixed-bag. Many of the songs are complete awesome, but others are almost unlistenable. I have their second album, The Execution Of All Things, and their last album, More Adventurous. I like The Execution better overall, but "Does He Love You?", "Porions For Foxes" and "I Never" are amazing Jenny Lewis songs.
As a side note, Jenny Lewis has got to be one of the best female vocalists in indie/alternative music today. Up there with Fiest, Amy Milan and Neko Case. She is also a fantastic storyteller. Listen to her songs on The Execution and you may just swear that she's describing the highest highs and lowest lows of you life. She has a wonderful solo album and also sings back-up for Postal Service.
Some Cardigans popped up on my Pandora and I think I've fallen in love again.

Fucking excellent. By far their darkest album. Possibly one of the darkest CD's I've ever heard. Sowing Season is such an awesome song.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just listened to the song Archers. It's exactly what the record needed.
