Okay I'm way late to this, but the way you have Aquaman fight the perception that he's a dumb character isn't to have that viewpoint brought up within his own comic so that he can refute it
It's to just ignore that perception even exists and make Aquaman a super rad character within his own comic

One is way less awkward, but as the sales show it got the job done
So last year, I asked one of my sister's friends if she was planning on watching Guardians. She dismissed, not just the film, but the entire MCU franchise as 'junk', and then said she was planning on watching ASM2.
I suppose I need to track her down and get her reaction to this news...
with the nature of civil war being what it is I would expect to see a lot of small appearances from a bunch of heroes and spider-man might just be one of those

that depends on how much they advertise spider-man being in it
I mean at work today I had a toooooon of people talk to me about how Spider-Man is gonna be in Captain America 3 (Cause I had ASM playing in the store)
and a few that he's gonna be in Avengers 2
so regardless of how well they advertise it, people are expecting it at this point because it is the narrative that has spread
