Are there more creative games like Minecraft ?

JR.SutmanJR.Sutman Registered User regular
My 6 year old is a gamer. He loves Minecraft, and I like the creative aspect to it. I like that he's building and being creative. Are there more games that require the player to be creative. And build?
Any and all help would be great!

There's Starbound and Terraria, which are pretty much the same but in 2D.

It's an early access game on Steam that I am enjoying the crap out of. Similar to Minecraft but mostly non blocky graphics. No gore. You are on an alien world full of dinosaur like animals, some hostile, but also big ogre like humanoids, giant killer robots and UFOs. I think you can turn those off (called build mode), if you prefer to dig and build in peace. Last time I played base building felt rather unfinished but they release new updates all the time. But the way you can design your own vehicles and weapons is amazing. There are a bunch of fan videos of peoples creativeness and gameplay on youtube and Steam.

Some parts of the game might be too complicated for a 6 year old. I'm not sure. Some kids just get crazy good at this stuff. But if voxel shaping and designing is too complicated you can download recipes from other people (in the game or of steam workshop) and at that point the crafting works pretty similar to Minecraft.

    Kerbal Space Program

Rocket building simulator and orbital simulator in one, but, like Minecraft, very cartoony and simplified too.

The in-depth part of orbital mechanics MIGHT be a bit difficult for a six year old, but my little cousin is seven and has a grand time just building rockets and crashing them all over the place. That's a good thing, because it means it's a game he can grow and enjoy more and more as he gets older. And you probably would enjoy it too, as it's not silly or simple.

Kerbal Space program could be a real potential hit, and factors in some fun new math and science.

Terraria/Starbound isn't really "exactly like minecraft" because it's got a whole lot more sidescrolling platformer combat and a whole lot less architecture and engineering. It's still super good, but if the kid only loves building houses and doesn't want to play the platformer part, it might not work.

I'd steer clear of early access games for a kid, as they've got a lot more potential for problems that could be frustrating to a kid.

There's a nearly infinite supply of games that are fundamental copies with tweaks of Minecraft and Terraria/Starbound. There's also a new genre of zombie survival that factors in some of the building themes, but they're way more about combat and have adult themes that would not be suitable for a younger kid.

What is this I don't even.

This is super early alpha and only has a coupla hours of missions, if you don't mess around with different constructions, but it's worth the 7 bucks right now. It does have some cartoonish gore if that bothers you. Running over chickens and people makes blood splatters.

I'll throw my hat in for Terraria or Starbound (either would be good choices in the 2D side-scrolling fasion), and Kerbal is just a LOAD of fun building rockets and seeing what would work and what doesn't. You can be as practical or absurd as you want.

Between you and me, Peggy, I smoked this Juul and it did UNTHINKABLE things to my mind and body...

Just wanna throw Pontifex on to the list. It is limited in scope as it is all about building bridges and see if they can carry the load they need to, but it is good fun to toy around with.

The risk is that it may to demanding for your 6 year old, but there is a free demo so no risk in trying (except you might be grabbed by it yourself).

    Bones heal, glory is forever.

I was just about to post this. The things you can build with just the few basic blocks they have are incredible, and it can only get better.

To get more leverage out of minecraft there is modded minecraft that add....so many things. My daughter (9) just started working with bees and will be breeding them to produce materials hopefully soon.

Careful, this game has the magical ability of making you not even care that you're seeing the sun rise while you continue to build an ever expanding factory. I can only recommend this to those with only the strongest of wills.

Imagine if you were playing Civ and the next turn you are guaranteed to win the game. If you're will is strong enough to save and go to bed instead of hitting the next turn button, you might be prepared for this game.

Yeah, more than cartoonish I'd say. Probably not appropriate for a 6-year-old.

As someone else mentioned, try looking into Mods for minecraft. The minecraft forums themselves have a forum dedicated to them. They modify minecraft so that it expands the game any number of ways. Airships, sea ships, rockets to the moon, the moon, mars, alternate demensions, new crops, new monsters, new technologies, new magic, new biomes, new graphics, pretty much anything you can think of there's mods for. Your kid likes minecraft, so you can give them more minecraft.

Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

Blood aside, my son loves this game (but he's 10). It may make me sound like a bad parent but I think in the past week he's logged over 8 hours in it. 6 years old is tricky because reading is a challenge though. How about the Sims? That allows you to build houses and mess with people. The camera and building controls might be slightly hard to get used to - but that's basically a big sandbox (especially if you enter some money codes in).

Oh - Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 or 3 would be pretty great too - 2 might be easier to build with as it's 2D, but 3 has a true sandbox mode with everything unlocked and unlimited funds.

Spoilered for big. Once they put a completely open sandbox without the 'kill the army' aspect, i think that games going to be pretty big. Here's Optimus Prime for instance.
