My 6 year old is a gamer. He loves Minecraft, and I like the creative aspect to it. I like that he's building and being creative. Are there more games that require the player to be creative. And build?

It's an early access game on Steam that I am enjoying the crap out of. Similar to Minecraft but mostly non blocky graphics. No gore. You are on an alien world full of dinosaur like animals, some hostile, but also big ogre like humanoids, giant killer robots and UFOs. I think you can turn those off (called build mode), if you prefer to dig and build in peace. Last time I played base building felt rather unfinished but they release new updates all the time. But the way you can design your own vehicles and weapons is amazing. There are a bunch of fan videos of peoples creativeness and gameplay on youtube and Steam.

Some parts of the game might be too complicated for a 6 year old. I'm not sure. Some kids just get crazy good at this stuff. But if voxel shaping and designing is too complicated you can download recipes from other people (in the game or of steam workshop) and at that point the crafting works pretty similar to Minecraft.
Rocket building simulator and orbital simulator in one, but, like Minecraft, very cartoony and simplified too.
The in-depth part of orbital mechanics MIGHT be a bit difficult for a six year old, but my little cousin is seven and has a grand time just building rockets and crashing them all over the place. That's a good thing, because it means it's a game he can grow and enjoy more and more as he gets older. And you probably would enjoy it too, as it's not silly or simple.
Terraria/Starbound isn't really "exactly like minecraft" because it's got a whole lot more sidescrolling platformer combat and a whole lot less architecture and engineering. It's still super good, but if the kid only loves building houses and doesn't want to play the platformer part, it might not work.
I'd steer clear of early access games for a kid, as they've got a lot more potential for problems that could be frustrating to a kid.
There's a nearly infinite supply of games that are fundamental copies with tweaks of Minecraft and Terraria/Starbound. There's also a new genre of zombie survival that factors in some of the building themes, but they're way more about combat and have adult themes that would not be suitable for a younger kid.
This is super early alpha and only has a coupla hours of missions, if you don't mess around with different constructions, but it's worth the 7 bucks right now. It does have some cartoonish gore if that bothers you. Running over chickens and people makes blood splatters.

The risk is that it may to demanding for your 6 year old, but there is a free demo so no risk in trying (except you might be grabbed by it yourself).

Careful, this game has the magical ability of making you not even care that you're seeing the sun rise while you continue to build an ever expanding factory. I can only recommend this to those with only the strongest of wills.
Imagine if you were playing Civ and the next turn you are guaranteed to win the game. If you're will is strong enough to save and go to bed instead of hitting the next turn button, you might be prepared for this game.

Yeah, more than cartoonish I'd say. Probably not appropriate for a 6-year-old.
Blood aside, my son loves this game (but he's 10). It may make me sound like a bad parent but I think in the past week he's logged over 8 hours in it. 6 years old is tricky because reading is a challenge though. How about the Sims? That allows you to build houses and mess with people. The camera and building controls might be slightly hard to get used to - but that's basically a big sandbox (especially if you enter some money codes in).
Oh - Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 or 3 would be pretty great too - 2 might be easier to build with as it's 2D, but 3 has a true sandbox mode with everything unlocked and unlimited funds.
