Funny thing, all my squad members who had the flaw 'Darcsen Hater' just happened to get shot and left to bleed out.
Fighting racism, one squad fatality at a time...
My only gripe about this game is that the rating is only and entirely based on speed. No other performance factors apply - basically rewarding you for how degenerative you are with cheesing mechanics.
Snuck one guy across the map (maybe sniping an ace or two for some extra exp/gold along the way) and planted them in on the enemy's flag - the enemy that currently otherwise surrounds and outnumbers you 3-to-1 I might add. I guess that means...they have to leave now...? :?
Well, the game is fun at least, bizarre rules of war aside.
Yeah, very addictive game. I made it to finish the mission past that one last night.
In that mission
Rosie walked past two tanks and 2 shock troopers taking shots at her straight to the enemy flag giving a grand total of ZERO fucks. She may have some serious personality problems, but after that all is forgiven.
Can you refuse offers from the old dude in the graveyard, and later go back and redeem them? Because this heal thing is fecking 6500 xp :< That's 3 and a half levels for my classes...
Ah nvm, a quick save cleared that up for me. Which this game really reaquire a lot of? It's save at the beginning of every turn, at the least! You never know when a character is gonna spend her whole magazine shooting into the top 10cm of the rock she's using for cover or the the railing of the bridge she's standing on... It's a real fun an endearing game but there's also a lot of "WTF ARE YOU DOING!?!?!"...

Yes, it might not be the same one he offers next time you visit though. He cycles through ones you don't buy, I'm not sure how long till he repeats. I wouldn't worry about it too much. The orders are nice and there are certainly some OP ones but keeping your soldiers trained and fully equipped is a higher priority early on.
But yeah, I just got into the habit of having at least 2 saves, one of them in book mode just in case. Still, sometimes suiciding is better, as you also get an option to restart the battle from the planning stage.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Oh God, I need to finish this game. I was loving it and then suprise! escort the cripple mission and just nope, died the first time and I don't think I ever even started it up again.
That first skirmish mission is really good for grinding (the incredibly obtuse way) of hidden potentials. Most of the time you'll still take it in one turn so you'll get a decent slice of xp/cash too. Just send out a couple of fuckers into the firing line and send your levellers after them to bring'em up and shoot dudes on your way to the flag.
That Alice/Rosie/Largo add action points to the group was a fact that would've been welcome before the fourth mission or so... :x
It was kinda entertaining to discover that one of the shocktroopers was 12 (JAAAPAN!), but I was ok with her being some sort of Natalie Portmanesque murder-machine...
Some grinding later and 5 out of her 6 potentials are negative. :[ Into the box you go!
And on that same line, that "looking out for no1" sniper dude that was some sort of badass antisniper got Acrophobia when unlocked. Yeah you'll never see the battlefield again mister.
BUT! Jane is a fucking monster! Anti-imperial, antipersonnel +damage potentials and and slew of other ability heighteners (NO negatives)!? It's you and that Lynn (double actions? lol) lady that'll mow down shit on the front line!

Jane is awesome. I always kept her on the field.
I really, really wish other strategy games would level up classes instead of individual characters. It gives me peace of mind that I can bench or use anyone and there won't be crazy level disparity.

Well, there's some crazy disparity between potentials, but that's not a matter of time using someone and is out of your hands.
Uuh, I think the word was that the sequel was crap? I dunno if the third one was more playable but that one was on PSP...

The story was quite meh in 2, but the gameplay itself was top-notch. Some people complained about maps changing from one large map to a group of smaller ones, but that didn't bother me at all.
The problem with Valkyria Chronicles 2 is that it flips to that stupid fucking japanese trope of *everything* being in high school. because war aint hell enough without wondering if sempai will notice me and take me to prom and midterms are tomorrow! >.>
I may have chosen some extremes, but I wish I wasn't telling the truth.
The characters in your team are pretty interesting, even if some of them again, fall into well trodden tropes. The new class divergence is interesting, changing lancers into mortar launchers or taking an assault and giving them an LMG so they are super strong with interception fire (not so much for fighting since their spread is the entire screen).
The gameplay is solid, and it would be an awesome game if they just got rid of the whole school aspect of it.
VC3 goes back to what war is and doesnt fuck around.

I just finished that stupid mission, and good god is it lame. It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for the fact that every time I failed it I had to sit through shitloads of exposition just to get back into the map. The elite shocktrooper cost me so many damn runs that I finally gave up and cheesed him by getting lucky with headshots.

Don't forget about your loli Valkyrie in a chainmail bikini in VC2...
Yeah, Sega tried SO hard to make the game sell in Japan that there was no room for the rest of the world to like it. Then they backtracked to the proper gameplay, but forgot to sell it in the regions it actually sold back then. Sega just did everything wrong with the franchise after the first game, including putting it on the PSP instead. Then, just to add insult to injury, they NEVER used that awesome CANVAS engine again. I mean they used it in the sequels, but on the PSP screen good luck noticing it.
which leads me to really think that Japan actually has no clue how to do business outside of Japan (save Sony)
Sega and Capcom are oblivious. (Sorry, going into Monster Hunter here) I raged when I found out that Monster Hunter 4U was only going to be 3DS.
They would have made a killing if they released it for WiiU as well like they did with MH3U and actually have decent multiplayer grouping/connection.
Or maybe... and I'm just going to throw this out there... maybe Sega is completely terrible at making video games and only occasionally makes a good game by accident?
I'd agree with that if there wasn't the entire Yakuza series, the Phantasy Star Portable games and Binary Domain all in the last decade or so sitting right next to Valkyria Chronicles.
They do know how to make good games. They just don't a lot, for some reason.
Crap, I dunno if I can really say this game is fun. Trying to do Advance Wars with some sort of Gears of War control scheme, all the while every enemy is shooting at you in real time and your guys' shitty aim is totally random. Having to save/load because "hey, I was a little off today" is totally standard. You can't even have a look around the map to get an understanding of the situation because guys are fucking shooting at you why aren't you ending the turn yet? Your dudes' overwatch or retaliatory strikes seems very random, "when I feel like it", as well. It's like the difficulty of the game totally lies in these tbh shitty mechanics

Well I can understand the frustration seeing as the game does a poor job of explaining its mechanics.
For aiming, yeah it can seem random with low level troops and armaments, but if you're aiming for headshots (which you should) some of the shots are naturally going to miss but their well worth it compared to the dismal damage that is bodyshots. The only thing that improves aim outside of upgrades is zooming all the way in with your sniper rifle and even those can go awry.
As for looking around the map, you can go ahead and aim which will stop all incoming fire as the enemy troops kindly let you take your shot. You can easily cancel your shot and move to the position you want before taking your action. Given it won't stop firing while moving but will give you a better idea without taking the least amount of damage.
As for overwatch, troops (except lancers and snipers) will begin firing as soon as enemy troops come in to line of sight and range. So scouts and engineers will shoot from far off but do so-so damage while a well placed shock trooper can kill off incoming forces. So it is always best to end a unit's turn facing the enemy--and also being attacked from behind negates the chance to evade (drop down taking much less damage). Naturally they stop firing when the enemy takes their shot but if they were hit and live they will then take their retaliation shot. Note that while doing the overwatch shot troops will track their target thus losing their previous LOS. So what might have been an ideal firing squad on a corridor that just took out that suicidal scout now completely ignores the approaching shock trooper.
Yeah, I find shock troopers are actually better for defence than attack; they will absolutely murder anything that walks into their line of sight. Also the aim thing gets better as you level up and your soldiers get more competent. I'm near the end of the game and my sniper's reticules are basically a dot at this point.
And yes, you'll want to save frequently. Every turn. And cycle your saves. I feel like there's a whole different design philosophy going on in a lot of Japanese games, namely that they're not afraid to make you play a section over and over again until you get it right, which means they also don't care about bullshit that pops out of nowhere that you can only properly deal with if you already know its coming. This also explains the A-F grading system a lot of these games have; you're not supposed to get an A the first time, you're supposed to play the map over and over until you can do it blindfolded. Only then have you earned the game's approval.
- Fixed an issue where the firing rates of several weapons/enemies would increase at higher frame rates.
Yesssssss.
That's good. Now if I ever replay the game I can not lock the frame rate down. It was kind of annoying to do so, but less annoying than nearly instantly dying to intercepting fire.
Once you realize all the mechanics you're supposed to abuse the game gets a lot easier. Retaking bhrul is a good example.
Drive your tank right into the enemy, mortar the area in front of you. Drive the tank between the ace and the truck, snipe the far AT tank. Drive the tank one further, turn around and murder the ace tank. Run Alice all the way to the end and win the map in one turn.
As is the mission before that (skirmish 6) which you can win in 4 turns (8 for A/S rank). Potentially 3 if you're gutzy but 4 is safe.

I always cleared retaking bruhl by rushing a stormtrooper up the right side, killing enough to clear a path for a scout, then running a scout through. Still one turn, no need for tank shenanigans.
Yea, but then you can't kill the ace tank and get the upgrade. Only the tank is mobile enough to get there in one turn. (Ad do enough damage to kill it) You can also drop smoke and grenade the AT cannon if you just want to finish the mission.

Perhaps it would be safer to say that Yakuza has succeeded in-spite of Sega, not because of it. :P

I think it's also safe to say that Sega spends more time and money making sure properties sell in Japan. Sometimes like with Yakuza it makes sense and having a small following out West is just a nice byproduct. Sometimes like with VC you alienate the planet while making a product your home country still doesn't like.
which means they also don't care about bullshit that pops out of nowhere that you can only properly deal with if you already know its coming.
Even though I find this kind of design ethos annoying -I mean christ...at least give me some idea if I need lancers for a mission or not- I get it. But man it sure would be nice if I could skip the numerous cutscenes you have to sit through in most of the battles.

I was going to say "Of course there is," booted it up...uhh....hmmm. No, it is only available on defeat so the easiest way to do it is to kill Welkin.
