There is a simpler solution to my problem. although it probably wasn't intended.
You can grab an office chair from a few rooms back and use that instead of a box.

    That's what I did. :P

    Heh, take that puzzle!

    Nice avatar :)

Now I'm stuck again, but its because I keep failing to set up the portals right for an inertia jump not that I don't know what to do. Bah.
I tried an office chair but it kept falling over so I portal'd all the other chairs and computers to made a pile, which took a lot of random hopping onto to get just right. Grabbing a cube sounds a lot less time-consuming.
I stood on a computer case while it was vertical, worked for me the second time. (The first time, it must've tipped over, so I went back to get a chair, but never used it. Also, I never saw the cube in a glass case or whatever. I still don't know where it is.
I remember seeing a clear tube streaming cubes somewhere around there, I should go back and try to get a missile fired at it.

The bit where you have to 'jump' over a glass wall, through a force field. There's a little enclave to the left where I can get a load of speed, but I can't fire a portal through to the big wall in the main chamber to take advantage of it.
jump into the floor, pop out of the wall, and shoot a new portal into the floor. You'll pop out of the wall again, this time iwth enough force to get over the fence.
Well that's what I thought, but I can't even get enough momentum to clear the non-portable floor, so I can't create a second portal :/ I know I'm missing something really obvious and that's what makes it more annoying!

Edit: Oh man, I got it! Awesome, thanks.

This is cool because usually my mom ticks me off for playing my PSP or TF2 or BF2 but when she saw me shooting a portal and walking through it she proceeded to stay and watch me play through the rest of about 3 hours of the game.

And I usually don't get along with my mom very well. The wonders of Physics!

Also, crossposting from the orange box thread since I kind of forgot about this topic and it's more appropriate to put it here:
They said that you'd be able to understand more about who you were in HL2 if you played Portal...well, so far all I've understood is that whoever built the goddamn Portal training centre certainly loves to screw with people's brains. What's with the rampant A.I.? What's the scene at the end mean where all the A.I. heads are still operational? Why were you even there? WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? This doesn't answer a single thing, yet raises even more questions.

    Also:
Does anyone know the significance of the reference to Black Mesa in the credits song? I don't get it.

Was googling for the song lyrics, couldn't find them, so since I'm bored...Yes I forgot to screencap the lyrics, someone please help me vet them.
    This was a triumph
    I'm making a note here
    HUGE SUCCESS
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction
    Aperture Science
We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us
except the ones who are dead
but there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
    and if science gets dull
    and you (???)
for the people who are still alive

    I'm not even angry
    I'm being so sincere
    right now
Even though you broke my heart and killed me
    And tore me to pieces
And threw every piece into a fire

As they burned it hurt me because
I feel so happy for you

Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta were releasing on time
    So I'm not I got burned (???)
Think of all the things we learned
    For the people who are
    still alive

    Go ahead and leave me
I think I prefer to stay inside
Maybe you will find someone else to help you
    Maybe black mesa
    That was a joke
    haha
    Fat chance
    Anyway this cake is great
    It's so delicious and moist
Look at me still talking when theres science to do
When I look up there it makes me glad that I'm not you (???)
    I've experiments to run
There is research to be done
    On the people who are
    still alive

    When you leave me I'm
    Still alive
    I'm doing science and I'm
    Still alive
    I feel fantastic and I'm
    still alive
While you're dying I will be
    still alive
And when you're dead I will be

As in, competing to develop teleportation technology? It would be interesting, but I don't see how it would play a significant role in the HL universe. I can see how a combine portal ---> Aperture Science portal link would be made though, even the turrets and the design of the facility looks kind of alien-esque and combine-inspired.

It ought to be mandatory to check out the stuff at Aperture Science prior to this game's release.
Use login, followed by any username to login, password is "portal" or "portals". Use "apply" to take the application form to Aperture Science.
Commands from the command prompt are (probably complete, not sure): dir, lib, ls, apply, logoff, interrogate, and valve. And (website application spoiler):

You can't memorize it, because it is always changing. Unless you have amazing memory, the string changes several times before you would have a chance to memorize it or write it down. Besides, it is case sensitive and you can't enter case sensitive strings when they prompt you to. They are fucking with you. If you want to know what you can type there, it is in this spoiler

It's not a 1-time button. Just go back and try again.
    I'm not understanding this

How do I go back? You mean, like through the door? Because I go to the wall that's supposed to come out and press E and it makes a door opening noise but nothing happens.

You've turned on the middle platform, correct? Use that to jump under the room with the box, which should have a button in plain view. That button will activate the moving wall thing.

Portal was quite the experience. I'm sure I'll be able to justify why it is, without a doubt the single player game of the year in a few days, when I'm less giddy; when I'm not recalling the game's best moments and bursting into fits of giggles. Though I'm sure there will be complaints regarding the length of the "main" game, I found it to be brilliantly paced and, just when I was convinced there were no more unique puzzles to be had, that in those nineteen rooms they had exhausted every possible brain-teaser, the game gets turned on its head and the focus seamlessly switches from puzzle-solving to exploration. The writers deserve credit for penning a script that gives the LucasArts games of old a run for their money on the laughs-per-minute, yet also creating a scenario that provided some brilliantly tense and genuinely panic-inducing survival sequences.

I doubt I will forget that final boss sequence any time soon. Not only has Valve set the new standard for puzzle games, but for first person shooters.

Utterly astounding. A puzzle game and a first person shooter without parallel. A true work of art.
