Marvel: What do you think we pay you for?

Looks like some artists at Marvel are going to have to start working for a living again.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=13

It is the first article on the page. Essentially, Marvel is emphasizing that they expect all artwork submitted to them to be original. Reference material is okay, but no more tracing.

I for one am happy about this, but I've actually seen some people upset because they rather have photo-realism than original content.

I suspect that this is done to protect them from lawsuits more than anything else.
I doubt that Claudia Schiffer really wanted to be in a Fantastic Four comic.

I dunno..maybe it's the tracing? Swiping other artists pictures for his own? The fact that he can't draw the same character in the same way...in the same book?

Greg Land gets paid a lot of money (high profile artists can make $200+ per page, plus royalties) to basically lay a magazine on a lightbox and trace it. This results in unnatural poses and facial expressions that don't match the scene, and the appearance of characters differing from one panel to the next. As an wannabe artist who has always wanted to draw comics, it offends me that a guy like Land can get paid to trace pornstars, actors, and other comic artists' art.

Wait. So he just cuts out the latest E! article about the Super Skrull and traces it? I guess he must have gotten that picture of the Thing from the latest Entertainment Weekly, right?

Look, I am not denying that sometimes Greg Land is a bit of a 'tracer,' but I enjoy reading his comics from time to time. I don't buy them, they're not my thing, but I have perused them while at the shop. I'd rather read him than say Howard ChalkiI'mtoolazytospellcheckhislastname

Why do you think Greg Land is a "high profile artist"?

Because he achieves photorealism through tracing magazines and other artists' work, leading the vast horde of drooling mongoloids who think, "Hurrr it sure do look good but why do Topher Grace look like Mr. Fantastic, hurrrr?" to buy it, since they either don't know any better or don't give a fuck?

Now keep in mind, Tony Harris also does the photo tracing thing for Ex Machina, and I don't have a problem with it, since he sets up his own photoshoots with friends and family, goes to a lot of trouble to pose them and get the expression he wants, and produces a good product in the end. He also doesn't plagiarize the fuck out of his fellow artists.

I like the story in Ultimate FF and now Ultimate Power but goddamn everyone looks so goddamn ridiculous. Johnny Storm has a different haircut in every panel. People always have this goofy expression on their face.

Maybe I'm just not a Greg Land person.

I know I love my John Romita Jr and some people complain about his style.(Not sure why though)
