Dragon Dragon, Rock the Dragonball [Xenoverse]

This is Goku. OR IS IT????

Dragonball Xenoverse is a video game for PC, PS4, XBOne, PS3, and Xbox 360. It's a lot like the Budokai Tenkaichi series of DB games, which means:
  • Over-the-shoulder perspective
  • Chain combos
  • An ungodly character selection
  • Some sort of retelling of the DBZ Saga

HOWEVER, two things make Xenoverse unique:

First, the ability to make custom characters and fill them out with whatever moveset you see fit, subject to earning those abilities in-game. The possibilities are limitless! Make a Saiyan(M/F)! Who loves WEED

Or make a Majin(M/F)! In the fiction, Majin Buu has been cloned so many times over the years that a diluted, non-evil race of similar puttymen exists. Mine is 2cool4u. Male Majins look like basic Buu, while female Majins look more like Perfect Buu.

VMhSWna.png

Other races include Earthling(M/F), Namek and Frieza-Race

The OTHER noteworthy factor is that even though you are playing out the aforementioned famous battles, you are doing so from the perspective of a Trunks-led force of TIME COPS who operate out of a city on Shenron's back. This may be a turnoff for some people, but you can also access one-and-done "parallel quests" where you can more accurately relive battles by selecting actual DBZ characters.

Other modes include the bogstandard VS and open-world treasure hunts you use your Scouter/Energy Sense to complete.

Currently I'm playing on PC, but I might get the PS3 version soon to play with RL friends. You can add me up on Steam as #COOLTEENS. Post your platform, your relevant username, and show off your custom characters! Above all else, though, ROCK THE DRAGON.

I didn't know that! Will edit. I assume the same is true of "Frieza-Race", which will never stop being funny. They didn't even think of a name! Just tons of Friezas runnin' around!

Tiny male Majin with maximum fatness.

It's also worth noting that the servers are sadly pretty fucky right now.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Namekian life cycle doesn't make very much sense. The original Piccolo spit up an egg containing a clone of himself right as Goku killed him, which grew into a new Piccolo, who was treated as the same individual by Kami. And Piccolo and Kami were originally one being that intentionally split itself into good and evil sides. And then later the original "good side" and the clone child of the "evil side" recombined into one being again... but not before Piccolo had absorbed the body and consciousness of an unrelated Namekian.

I guess all the fusing and splitting might not be the primary method of reproduction but, still, what the fuck.

    Namekians are like Yoshis

So I'm gonna need the world's foremost Yoshi reproduction specialist to come in here and explain it to you.

@Speed Racer how do Namekians actually reproduce?

Everyday we stray further from God's light

I don't think were given enough info to know, the obky thing we know for sure is they reproduce asexually

I'm pretty sure it's implies that the nameless namekian splitting himself was more of a magic thing than a biology thing, and it's not clear if the same goes for the way demon king produced majunior

If I had to guess though I'd say the egg vomitting thing is how they reproduce tho

Wait, what, only five years span between Dragonball and Dragonball Z? How does Goku go from a kid to an adult?

5 years span between dragonball and DBZ, but dragonball itself spans a whole bunch of years. Starts as goku is a kid, but when he beats piccolo, he's a full grown adult

Also recommend tracking down DBZ Kai if you want to watch DBZ.

It is... heavily edited, in the best way.

If you're wondering just how severely they cut the filler, I believe it is almost over at episode 35-ish

I've spent about five hours in Xenoverse so far and I've come to the conclusion that it is, in fact, THE best Dragonball game

The original villains are super dumb but I'm giving the creators the benefit of the doubt in assuming it's intentional, they feel like the logical conclusion of GT's character design and it seems totally intentional

also, the online play in this game is rocksolid

The servers seem to have chilled out a bit, and I was able to connect with a friend and do Parallel Missions with no lag from Georgia to SoCal

I'm playing on PS4 and after 7 hours I can't tell if I like the game. When the game works it's pretty great, but... the award system is based on a dice roll, the camera is *awful*, the basic attack system is different for every selectable character yet your create-a-character doesn't get to pick theirs, stats-wise picking your own character is a handicap for the early game parallel missions, there are a ton of bugs in the presentation (wrong names being used, wrong portraits being used, wrong pronouns for the create-a-character) and the AI doesn't have to follow the same resource rules that you do.

And it breaks the First Commandment of Modern Video Games: Thou Shalt Not Take Away The Player's Ability To Rebind Controls.

You're given three presets but man I wish I could fuck with these myself.

I really, really, really wish you could change your basic strings to match other characters. That's my only beef with the create-a-character. I wanna do Captain Ginyu battle pirouettes with my Blue Buu Chick.

Actually, it seems to be based on the overseas-only Dragonball Online.
    Wikipedia wrote:
The events of Dragon Ball Online take place in the age 1000 (216 years after the Buu saga.) with the role of villain going to a group headed by Mira. Mira originates from the Demon Realm and is attempting to invade the Earth in the age 2000, with the help of Frieza's army and the Red Ribbon Army, but currently has his eyes set on the past by way of time travel. The purpose for him wanting to go back in time is so that he can attempt to obtain Goku's DNA which he will then use to strengthen himself for when he invades the Earth in the future. Currently, all known henchmen of the Dark Eye have been under the effect of mind control. Mind controlled victims are characterized by a green gem marked with an "X" that rests in their forehead (in some cases it may be in their chest or could also be a mask instead of a gem).

You play as a character from an unknown time period who is sucked through a crack in time caused by Mira's Army. Eventually, you make your way to the age 1000 (with the help of the Time Patrol Capsule and Trunks) and throughout the game you'll be able to travel through different time periods to alter the past and fix the present.

It should also be noted that all of the events that the player witnesses in the Age 1000 currently only take place on the planet Earth. Both the Majin and Namekian race start their journeys, just like the Humans, on Earth. The new planet Namek was destroyed by Mira in the age 853 and sections of the Earth have since been transformed to resemble the planet Namek.

Each race had their own classes. Humans had the Martial Artist, Spiritualist and the unimplemented Engineer. Namekians had the Dragon Clan and the Warrior. And Majin had the Wonder Majin and the Mighty Majin. Each class split into one of two chooseable ones at Lv30.

This is fairly fun but the random drop system is completely monstrous

Still trying to get the last piece of a few different outfits from basically every PQ I've unlocked so far

Playing it on PS4 if anyone wants to do parallel quest shenanigans or anything

Liking it so far. Wish I had better guidance on the combos. Like how do I do the hard hit that makes them fly, then I suddenly appear next to them to hit them again? i have no idea how I'm doing that.

After the second hard hit in a combo, press jump/teleport I believe, the timing seems kind of finicky though and I haven't really managed to do it reliably

It also takes so much stamina that I rarely bother, I'd rather have that stamina free for dodging or using evasive ultimates

I almost want to remake my Human since I've got a much better handle on how best to take advantage of their racial traits.

Their ki regenerates so fast while using basic attacks that you can use supers and ultimates really rapidly.

I'm thinking I'll pump all my points into health, stamina, and striking supers. Don't need a large ki pool because you can just constantly refill and use your small pool.

I could also wish for a stat reset but since I'm only like level 20 or so that feels like a waste when I could be using that to accumulate more permanent stuff like character unlocks, techniques, or a costume.

If you hit someone into the distance, continuing to hit attack buttons will teleport you to them for the next hit

X, X, X, X, X, Y, Y, Y, Y is the longest string and will leave them on the ground for you to Super

The trade off is that they have lots of opportunities to teleport out. Also, some knockback strikes you cannot teleport to (X, X, X, Y) but they still work as Super setups

I think it's really good! The random drops for items is kind of shit, but it's a mechanically sound game. The combat is solid and the online play seems pretty smooth. The story is...something.

This would be my game of the year of you could have your custom character fusion dance with someone else's custom character and the game knows how to combine the customization options to actually make the resulting fusion look like a cross between them
