Mad Max is really good you guys. Like, really, really good. Have you seen it yet? No? Well, go see it. We'll all wait for you to get back.

In the meantime, those of us who have seen it can talk about how great it was. And I guess we can talk about all the other movies that aren't Mad Max.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sH0__SpV88

Tomorrowland is out now too. The reviews so far are pretty mixed, but it is a Brad Bird film. It might be worth a watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJJrkyHas78

Jurassic World comes out next month and, I mean, it's a Chris Pratt joint, so of course I'm gonna go see it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L41xwM8tIRQ

I might be wrong, but I don't think we've really talked about Dope? I'm honestly pretty excited for it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngElkyQ6Rhs

I want it now.

And hoo boy, there are a lot of other movies that we can talk about. But especially Mad Max. Have you seen it yet? No? You really should.

(Honorable mentions for trailers not included in this OP: Ant-Man, because we already have a Superhero Thread, and Terminator: Genisys, because hahahahaha, nooooooo, that movie is gonna be hot garbage.)

Me and some friends frequently do theme weekends, wherein we watch 3-6 movies based around a central theme.

This week: 'Space is dark and full of terrors', with the order based on distance from Earth.

Today was Gravity and Moon. Gravity holds up great, and I'd never seen Moon before and now I'm kicking myself for waiting this long because goddamn that was good.

Tomorrow is Armageddon and Sunshine. I fully expect the mood whiplash to break my collarbone.

Fury Road, but make someone who hasn't seen it yet go with you.

    Tomorrowland is...not getting good reviews.

I think the most generous ones are basically "It's alright...if you're eight."

Then witness me witnessing him while he's being witnessed, I guess!

Edit: so apparently the next showing is at 7 Goddamned 30, I ain't waiting three hours to eat popcorn.

Avengers is in an hour, I could stand to try that again.

I'm gonna go see Tomorrowland tomorrow morning and decide for myself

I still don't actually know anything about it

I've been trying to not read reviews, but the meanest thing I've read about it is that it does not feel like a Brad Bird movie

    It feels like Chris Columbus

GAH WHICH MOVIE THREAD IS REAL!?!

Tomorrowland was fun. I wouldn't necessarily call it super great or anything, but it was fun.

Pitch Perfect 2 is pretty good. Glad I saw it before I saw Mad Max

Some good jokes, some ok songs, couple new characters that weren't awful.

It was a solid C average follow up to the greatness of the first movie, but I was ok with that.

    Nothing. Matters.

Brutal Legend is on sale on Steam for 80% off this weekend

And considering how much I've heard people talk about how Fury Road reminded them they should replay Brutal Legend, that is incredibly smart of them

Sometimes I am fascinated by the Special Thanks in credits in movies

I just rewatched Wet Hot American Summer and the Special Thanks include

    Dan Castellaneta
    Stephen Colbert
    Billy Crudup
    Adam Levine
    Mary-Louise Parker
    and Liev Schreiber

And I feel like there are many stories there and I wanna know

That seems like it wouldn't be nearly as good since the sound design and color palette are such wonderful parts of the film but sure okay do what you want George

The silent with soundtrack aspect could go either way, but after seeing this trailer I feel a lot more interested in the black-and-white aspect

You can do a lot with black and white.

If it's just grayscale for the whole movie without much deliberate forethought, then that's not much to get excited about.

    YL9WnCY.png
  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
I mean that trailer looked nice but I think the actual full-color film is much much better

    Like

this movie uses color better than just about any movie I can think of in years

It would be incredible if the color grading was completely redone for the black and white version so that it really popped in B&W.

I am currently watching the original Mad Max for the first time and it is a lot less wasteland-y and apocalypse-y than I thought it would be compared to Fury Road.

We should start putting a notice in the OP that the first Mad Max is technically pre-apocalypse

  • Lost CanuckLost Canuck World's Greatest Escape Artist Doctor Vundabar's Murder MachineRegistered User regular
It's still kinda apocalypse-y, there's clearly been a breakdown in society.

Black, white, and silent is a really excellent way to bring the editing of a film to the fore. Steven Soderbergh somewhat famously gives a whole lecture on editing by using a black, white, and silent presentation of Raiders of the Lost Arc.

Given how revelatory much of Fury Road's editing is, I'm VERY interested in that particular special feature.

That's what they do. They just stole a joke directly from X-Men. They don't make parody movies. They make reference movies.

And the joke itself is a callback to earlier in the movie.

Just before The Rock shows up to the team meeting, Roman asks if anyone else smelled baby oil.
