Probably? We don't do many polls, I'm not sure if users have that permission or not. There's nothing stopping it certainly.

I think I used the wrong terminology. I'm not sure what they are a called, but I was thinking about the things like "Hail Hydra" and "So Raven."

Could you give us some examples of a good time to use the Report button versus simply ignoring or debating with the user? I don't think I've ever actually used the button (edit: Huh. Apparently it isn't even a "Report" button, it's a "Flag" button. Did it used to be Report?).

Would this include violating the Glorius Edict? I seem to see that a little more in recent times, and have probably done it myself at some point.

This is the best admin'd/moderated forum I've ever posted on, so before anything else, thanks for that, to you and all the other staff!

The Glorious Edict is still officially in effect, but that in practise I rarely see it exercised. Is that something that the mods feel has essentially "done it's job" in reducing hostility and toxic behaviour on the forums?

I only ask because Geebs once infracted me for calling Spider-Man a douchebag or some such. Which was pretty funny, but I've always just been curious about the enforcement of the Edict.

Regarding the general forum rules, are current rules ever 're-evaluated' or are they generally only referenced when adding new rules, as opposed to modifying existing ones?

I should probably spring clean them at some point. We're loathe to add new rules if it's not necessary, but if a rule isn't working we'd edit it. Broadly speaking, our rules work.

How often do you receive harassment from someone after banning them from the forums/booting them from a thread?

About 20% of the time, which means it's a frequent occurrence.
Do you or any of the moderation staff ever look outside the forum (either at other forums or at articles/discussions on moderation) for new tools/ideas, or is it pretty much an internal affair?

Does the nature of our specific community affect mod policy; for example if you were admining a different forum would your rules for bans/punishments be different?

I manage and consult for other communities and write professionally about community management best practises, so I keep myself up to speed.

Very useful, there are specific tools that are only accessed through geth.
What recent trend on the forums do you like the least and why?

Oy, that's a loaded question. It's not a new thing, but I think the tendency to pile on people with views that differ from the majority is damaging to the long term health of the community.

I was just about to ask this, basically. I've never used it (or if i have i've forgotten), and the times I have thought about using it, I felt like a tattle tale and didn't. I wasn't sure how much it was even needed since it seems like anything I see that might need moderation, gets it (but then maybe someone else reported it instead)

The Glorious Edict is still very much in effect because insults are pretty much when the conversation starts to go straight to hell. If you think it's rarely enforced that's probably because people have learned not to insult one another.

It's flag > report. Use the report button when you believe a user is actively posting in bad faith or breaking rules. Then ignore them. If someone is breaking a rule/trolling/posting in bad faith, you should never be engaging with them. 95% of forum problems would be solved if people ignored the culprit.
Would this include violating the Glorius Edict? I seem to see that a little more in recent times, and have probably done it myself at some point.

Edict violations are always reportable. It's so easy not to violate that there's no excuse for doing so.

The edict prohibits directly insulting people. Insulting their opinions is a different kettle of fish, although obviously you can easily cross a line there.

Not that I'm complaining one way or the other but I feel like there's quite a few of them active at the moment (superhero stuff, Nintendo thread, PlayStation thread, etc) and wondered if this reflected a change in policy or just general indifference.

Many jobs that involve dealing with end-user complaints or behavior result in burnout over time (only dealing with people when they are reported / misbehaving can be exhausting and lead to a rather warped view of things). Do you worry about that for your staff? What kind of things do you or the mods to do avoid such burnout?
