Sad news! Station Master Tama has died.

    mwWeux0l.jpg

In the early 2000s, the Wakayama Electric Railway destaffed all stations on the Kishigawa Line to cut costs. Instead, local townsfolk were chosen to be the "stationmaster", and in 2007, Tama - a stray cat who was fed by the Kishi Station master - was chosen by the company to become the new official station master of Kishi. Her role mostly consisted of greeting passengers, and in lieu of a salary, she was paid in cat food.

Tama grew to be a local superstar, directly contributing to increased tourism in the region and use of the train line in general. She was promoted to Super Station Master in 2008, gaining an office with a litter box; in 2010, she was promoted to Operating Officer, making her the first cat to be an executive in a railway company.

She was 16 years old when she died.

May she ride the train into the afterlife, shiny and chrome.

Of course calling Obamacare socialism is a bit like calling a subway sandwich food.

Obama care is literally the largest wealth transfer to wealthy interests in decades. It is a massive hand out to the insurance industry, which forces people to obtain coverage but which does not require the insurers to control their spending.

i'm not saying that at all, btw

i'm just saying that citing yourself as representative of a view that most americans hold but do not understand is not really an argument

a far better poll would ask their opinion on socialism, ask if they benefit from any social programs in america (but not call them that - just simply list the programs they are enrolled in), and then ask if they considered those programs socialist

There's definitely changes that happened in the period, and the presentation I'm giving at a conference next week is mostly about the changes in narrative structure that changed between the pre- and post-1990s, but Miyazaki has always loathed the animation industry spawned by "Tezuka's curse" (aka anything limited animation).

Alright, so after reading this post I wiki'd Tezuka to see what else he'd made besides for Astroboy and Metropolis, and I'm ashamed to learn that he had made a film in 1970 called "Cleopatra: Queen of Sex" and I didn't even know about it!

It's really bad - it was made as part of Tezuka desperately scrounging for money wherever he could, and it was a dismal failure.

Tezuka: really influential dude, but maybe that wasn't for the best in some ways

Here's the study from that graphic Crab linked
    http://www.people.hbs.edu/mnorton/norton ariely in press.pdf

this one I think does this that for you
Overall, these results demonstrate two primary messages.
First, a large nationally representative sample of Americans
seems to prefer to live in a country more like Sweden than like
the United States. Americans also construct ideal distributions
that are far more equal than they estimated the United States
to be—estimates which themselves were far more equal than
the actual level of inequality. Second, there was much more
consensus than disagreement across groups from different
sides of the political spectrum about this desire for a
more equal distribution of wealth, suggesting that Americans
may possess a commonly held ‘‘normative’’ standard for the
distribution of wealth despite the many disagreements about
policies that affect that distribution, such as taxation and
    welfare (Kluegel & Smith, 1986).

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Friends and coworkers of local man Alan Tessler confirmed Wednesday that whenever they feel discouraged or depressed, they need only think of their 36-year-old acquaintance to put everything back into perspective, a fact to which Tessler, by all accounts, remains completely oblivious.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

No. We don't really have a word for it. It isn't even regulatory capture or special interest lobbying. It's really just law makers being bad at their jobs and not being able to imagine a system that is different from the current private insurance system. The ACA is not really such a huge reform. It's mostly some nice changes to insurance laws coupled with an attempt to solve the individual insurance market failure of adverse selection, but with no incentive for insurers to offer their plans at lower prices than they did while the market failure was on going.

    ah yes the gallup poll

that is all well and fine but i am willing to bet a not insignificant percentage of those in the "no" column have a tenuous grasp of socialism

and likely benefit from socialist programs in america

yes the "americans are idiots, if they only really knew what they believed they'd agree with me" argument.

    I'm not a fan.

You know about the polls that said Americans like everything obamacare does when listed out separately

But when asked about obamacare as a whole people were against it

    Lol

    I mean, yeah.

    People like free stuff.

They weren't so thrilled at getting a big fine for not opting in.

    But yes, that was true.

"people like free stuff" seems about as cartoonish as "people idiots who don't know they agree with me"

i don't think there are many people in favor of police departments who don't realize they also pay for them through taxes

But many would agree that we need to have more things given to us that we don't need to pay for, if you offer that option.

    who's offering that option?

    Allegedly a voice of reason.

    God.
That is just... so fucking frustrating.

um, where are you getting that number?

    I think it's just the formatted/unformatted difference.

If I'm right I'm going to lol at you for a few days.
if you're going to do so I'm going to remind you that you're an old
I am younger than the games you played when you were a kid
Probably younger than the games you played while you're in college

who wants to talk about comments made in prior days about breastfeeding and nipple piercing
    i prepared slides

are you pro or anti nipple
that part of the conversation is actually the boring part because there's no evidence that nipple piercing impacts your ability to breastfeed (no strong evidence the other way, either - not something studied rigorously for obv. reasons, altho lots of anecdotal claims that it doesn't matter as long as you get it done well in advance of your pregnancy and take the stud/jewelry out when doing the feeding)

the more interesting part is the claim that not breastfeeding your child is harming them (esp. because i think that claim wasn't made on the basis of the short term benefits of breastfeeding but the alleged long term benefits)

Shameful pursuits and utterly stupid opinions

I pay for water service, my police, fire, and ambulance service, my local schools, social security and medicare, medicaid, the US military, etc etc

all of these are social services provide by my government (which I own and pay for) for the benefit of myself and my fellow citizens

much of this would even be considered "socialism"

    none of it is "free"

to boil it down it "people like free stuff" tells me that you either don't respect the opinions being written about in this conversation or you are uninterested in joining the conversation in a serious manner and are having a laff

    r u avin a laff m8?
