The Spanish government has failed to contain the outbreak. The disease appears to be contagious before the point where infection is readily apparent. There have been no deaths yet, but the sudden fall from rash into unconsciousness is startling. More so is the fact that this appears to be entirely new - Not a permutation of another disease. It's got the World Health Organisation worried, but the actual impact is relatively small. Hopefully a cure of some sort can be worked out soon.
The world is currently at peace, though Russian forces have been massing on the Ukrainian border for the last couple of months. It's made Europe nervous, but an actual invasion into Europe is practically laughable. Hopefully it's just post-imperial grandstanding.
The Greek situation is reaching ahead. It's finances are dire and a special session of the UN has been called to see if a resolution can be worked out. Ordinarily this would be an inter-EU matter, but fears of another economic shock if they were to collapse has drawn attention from across the globe.
There is nothing else exceptional happening on the international stage.

The General Assembly,
Greece faces a potential collapse of its banking sector. For the Greek people, this would be a humanitarian disaster. Already they have faced their dreams and prospects shattered, now they face a ruin unlike any seen in the western world in decades.
We ask that the International Monetary Fund helps provide financial support in these trying times and that our debt is restructured so the burden is made bearable.
If the issue is resolved: European Economies will take a hit to income as debts are cancelled and investors move away from government bonds. Germany and the UK will be particularly affected.
If the issue is not resolved: Potential civil unrest. Greece will become more unstable and will be forced out of the European Union.

Q: What happens if Upkeep isn't paid for a military unit?
A: It doesn't do anything unless directly attacked for a turn. You can skip paying upkeep if something isn't needed for a turn without worrying about long term issues.
Everyone can PM. The game is designed so diplomats have less things to worry about so they can do more of it. Everyone's got access to twitter these days...
Also the USA would like to diplomatically remind everyone to behave appropriately. We have bigger guns than you. (Unless you're Russia, but that was old ages ago).

I don't think it's been said anywhere else, so just so everybody is aware, Science updates are on a bit of a different schedule than the other parts of the game.
Whereas the general day ends at 5pm EST, Science updates will happen at 8pm EST.
Thus, you should expect you science briefing in approx. 2 hours.

I do say, this whole "disease" business sounds quite alarming. Let's hope those boffins down at the lab can get to work on fighting the good fight, before this scenario reaches levels that could pop my monocle.
