if its an older car, it could be a transmission issue of switching between gears

It's a kia rio. Automatic transmission. No lights on on the panel.

Kick it in the slats from a complete stop on a quiet backroad, see if it stumbles then.

The inner wheel bearing on that wheel had broken down so bad that it wore down the wheel hub about 1/16" (maybe more) before I replaced the bearings and the hub, so that may have contributed. Other than that, I honestly have no idea. Shitty alignment?

I'm set up to get four new tires (the others don't have the same weird wear pattern, but they're pretty bald) next week, and I was thinking it'd be a good idea to get everything aligned after that.

Yeah, a collapsed wheel bearing will let the wheel tilt inwards and toe out at the same time. Hence the extreme wear on the inside edge. If the wheel bearings and the hub are good now, you should be fine with four new tyres and a four wheel alignment.

which reminds me I probably need to replace a tyre. Again.

(I got two (or three?) flats on the same wheel in six months by um.... treating gutters with an inappropriate amount of respect aka extreme parking, so after the first one I replaced the tyre with second-hand ones because it seemed more cost effective. But the tread on that one is looking pretty shallow now).

What sort of resources do you guys use when selecting car maintenance services?

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?
Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

It can be extremely difficult to find a reputable reliable mechanic. I would recommend asking around as much as possible, seeing which workshops get multiple recommendations for trustworthiness, then visiting them and talking to the techs there about your needs. If it feels like they are trying to pressure you into getting more work done than you need, then avoid at all costs. If you have trouble making contact with them (phone, email etc.) then avoid at all costs. Even the best mechanic in the world is useless to you if it takes five attempts over the course of a week just to make an appointment to get an oil change done. If you live in a decent sized area there are often smaller guys who work out of small workshop units or their own garage that are well-trained highly experienced mechanics for a long time, but decided they didn't want to work in a dealership environment anymore (for example, Eric the Car Guy or Scotty Kilmer on Youtube). If you can find one of them then you're pretty much set, because they eat and keep the lights on entirely off of their reputation, so they like to fix things right the first time, and get the work done quickly and for a reasonable price.

When I needed a mechanic the two last times I did some googling for shops that specialised in my car's make, googled them to find what other enthusiasts were saying about them and went from there. Has worked excellently both times, found people just like Numbers mentioned, guys in a small local shop trading on their reputation and enthusiasm.

I hadn't realized how far the Cadillac "V" series cars had dropped in value in the last couple of years.

There are second-generation CTS-Vs (so the ones with the LSA) going for like $35-$45k with next to no mileage on them.

9 year old STS-Vs (with the 4.4L supercharged Northstar V8) go for around $20k with mileage in the low 40k range.

Those seem like pretty great performance per dollar buys.

  • Donovan PuppyfuckerDonovan Puppyfucker A dagger in the dark is worth a thousand swords in the morningRegistered User regular
    Go with the CTS-V.

    Go with the CTS-V.

I mean, of course. But the STS-V still doesn't seem like a bad deal when you don't have that extra $20k to spend. You can make an STS-V into this banshee:

Honda has said it'll come over here, but it won't be until the 2017 or 2018 model year? Or something like that.

Well yeah you could, but I'd take the LSA over a Northstar any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

Yeah, I'd be down for a Miata with the 1.75L turbo engine out of the 4C.

Surely this will once and for all solve the argument of whether or not the Miata needs more power.

I think "needs" is the operative word there. The Miata is undeniably a fun car with the power it has right now. There's no "need" for more power in this case, because the every review of the new Miata I've seen doesn't harp on a need for more power.

Will a 240hp Miata be even more fun? Probably, I imagine that chassis is plenty capable of turning 240hp into instant joy. More than anything, I'd be excited to have that engine in a drop-top just for the noises it makes. It sounds great in the 4C, but imagine being able to hear all of those pops and crackles and turbo wooshes when there's no glass and metal in the way.

Man, unless you're going to a track every week, there comes a point where having too much HP becomes unfun. Unless you're a jackass who race stop light to stop light

The popularity of LS-swapped Miatas proves that more power in that chassis is definitely not a bad thing. Especially on the nicer versions with extensive chassis stiffening, premium suspension and brake upgrades, and some nice foged rims with quality fat rubber under the guards, those things are like road-legal classic Can-Am cars.

Yesterday the Evo had its 60k mile service, which entailed something like 30 different maintenance items including a replacement of every single fluid in the car, all of the hoses, the accessory belt, every filter, spark plugs and wires, and other things I'm forgetting.

You know that feeling when every single thing in your car is just a little bit better? That's me right now.

"hellaflush" hellasucks shit. At least bosuzoku cars look like something from an 80s anime, hellaflush is just a hot wet mess of a thing to do to make your car almost undriveable.

I honestly think it is standard issue anymore to first release the lowest HP model in any non muscle car and leave room to go up from there in order to reignite sales as things slow.

Also I sat in a 5.0 Mustang this past weekend, while my dad was buying his new F150. I noticed the clutch is rather soft. Is that typical Ford? Or typical for a modern manual? Does the car have to be on before there's anymore weight? Have I just gotten used to Subaru's admittedly mediocre (being generous) 5-speed transmission?
