I don't mind the walk speed. It facilitates taking everything in slowly, instead of rushing point to point. Not going to say anyone is wrong for hating it, but I respect it as a design choice. It's a refreshing change.

Dear Esther had a walk speed about that slow and it was excruciating. This game looks a little more content-rich and interesting though.

Dear Esther was a bad game

Rapture looks like at least one that is not good

    I like Dear Esther.

Though maybe that's because I played the original HL2 mod version a bunch first.

Is Rapture a pretty short game? Like can I belt it out over an afternoon off? Or is there more to it?

I have too many damn games to start.

Also if anyone is interested I'm gonna be messing around with Freedom Planet on the Youtubes. Link is in sig.

I've had Esther sitting in my Steam library for like two years.

One of these days I should really just go for it. It's like, super short, right?

  • Ms DapperMs Dapper Yuri Librarian Registered User regular
It's very short and you don't really do much except walk and hear a story.

    It's a somewhat interesting story.

Dear Esther is a very pretty game with a randomized story that is just as likely to be gobbldie gook as to approach coherence

It is a very pretty game though

Dear Esther isn't worth the time it takes to play. Skip!

Dear Esther is something that I found to be an interesting and worthwhile experience, but I also understand why a lot of people do not have interest in it.

Mechanically it fits that whole 'is this technically even a game?' thing that Gone Home has going on; but it's....I guess I'd say that it is slower, weirder, and less concerned with being coherent.

  • captainkcaptaink TexasRegistered User regular
I found Gone Home to be a much better experience. That is the first person walker for me.

Dear Esther is a great game if you're a person who prefers to avoid fast-travel in games like Skyrim

(it's me, I am that person)

I hadn't even considered that Stanley Parable would be a walking simulator

That's my favorite one if that's the case

The randomized story completely kills Dear Esther for me

also the garbage-ass "My First Student Film" ending

Gone Home had a lot of story hidden around that you could find outside of the pretty good main line, which was also good.

Firewatch is very likely to beat Gone Home and Stanley Parable for my favorite "walk around an environment while story is talked at you" game

Yes, hello that is me as well. The closest I got to using fast travel much in Skyrim was a mod that let you ride in the carts in first person the entire way, or if you wanted you could have it fast travel, or you could hop off at any point along the route. It was nice being able to kick back and just enjoy the countryside, then hop off if you saw something cool you wanted to check out.

I'm also the weirdo that turns off the compass and indicators in the game and tries to never use the map so I realize I'm obviously an outlier.

edit: all that is why I'm really excited about that FRONTIERS game because it looks like it's exactly the sort of exploration-focused game that I want.

Firewatch seems to maybe sort of have more adventure game type elements in it? But then again, what is Firewatch?

I really liked The Stanley Parable (it's one of the few games I've legit LOL at) but it didn't make an emotional connection with me like Gone Home.

I liked Stanley Parable because it definitely had Things To Say about the nature of storytelling and ownership, especially in regards to video games

    But it also had
Adventure Line and Minecraft endings and a secret ending based on literally hitting a button for an hour
