I don't get the Jesse Eisenberg hate. I've always found him to be pretty good in most everything I have seen with him . He's my much less annoying Micheal Cera.

I don't hate him, but like Cera he pretty much is similar in all of his movies. A fast talking awkward white guy completely indistinguishable from a lot of white young actors.

Yeah, that's the biggest change. Supposedly the studio forced the exposition speech the theatrical cut begins with because audiences are morons that can't think for themselves so let's spoil the whole setting!

Director's cut has no voice-over at all at the start.

O_o Nope, don't see that. I can see the Cera-Eisenberg thing to some extent, but even there they each have their niche; Cera usually is either more likeable or has a somewhat desperate "Like me" thing going, whereas Eisenberg pretty much tends to come across as asocial and misanthropic. They both have a geeky, indie outsider thing going, which Grace (in the stuff I've seen him in) pretty much misses entirely. And Reynolds? He's a frat boy.

I agree that they're all white, though.

don't talk bad about Ry Rey, the lovely canadian that actually likes to long distance run and is naturally much slimmer than the weight he bulks up to for movies where he takes his shirt off

he has way more charisma than Eisenberg and he's gonna be great as Deadpool

The DC has a scene or two added that give you the information spoon-fed in the expunged VO. I felt the pacing caused by the addition of these scenes felt a little weird, but I'm someone who had seen the theatrical cut of the film several times before, so maybe that was just a side-effect of being so used to that edit.

I've seen interviews with Eisenberg where he comes off as a dick, but I've always enjoyed his acting even if it is pretty one-note. American Ultra seems like it'll have some funny moments but looks awful similiar to Eisenberg's other pothead comedy, the pizza one.

I think it's time for the Batman pendulum (bat-pendulum) to swing back the other way - away from grittiness and back towards campiness

I want a bright, stylized, colorful, goofy movie about Batman plus Robin that also has genuine heart and pathos

Movie month power rankings, from best to worst:

    May
    June
December (it loses points because people think just putting a movie here makes it better than it really is. Like American Hustle)
    July
    November
    April
    March
    October
    September
    February
    August
    January

Eh August should be over February because the first of the month gets some left over block busters, where as February gets movies that weren't quite awful enough for January.

I caught Mitt a while back and it's an interesting movie - it doesn't really deal with politics at all, and is basically just a look at Romney hanging out with his family in the run up to the election. So you see him tustling with his sons, and getting a back rub from his wife before a debate, and sitting with his family around the table listing to David Sedaris on NPR, and talking about how much he loves O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and dorkily trying to iron a shirt while he's still wearing it.

You could accuse the documentary of feeling like a puff piece, and many people have, but I'm glad I saw it. I think the takeaway is basically: hey, you know those evil republican politicians that are trying to destroy the country? Well, they're human beings just you, and aren't really even evil. And I think that's something that's good to be reminded of, from time to time - that just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean they aren't a person.

So I sat down and watched all of Raimi's Evil Dead movies for the first time.

Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness were pretty much what I had expected, tone-wise. But The Evil Dead was a pleasant surprise, just a straight up low budget horror film that holds up surprisingly well (the following two films, while utilizing more elaborate technologies for effects shots, suffer way more from effects/composite shots sticking out like a sore thumb). I was also super surprised that Ash was extremely different in the beginning with none of Campbell's trademark swagger and charm; he's downright timid! I was not prepared for that.

The first movie's a great horror film, the second and third films are fun cartoons.

Lets also not forget the old piece of advice "If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person."

Mitt Romney is a classic case of that, you only have to see the 47% gaffe to get to know the real Romney.

Next, that was frustrating. Hella interesting premise teased by a nice opening voice over and world building-turned chase scene, completely ruined by slow, dull, check the boxes hollywood moviemaking.

Older actor sort of past his prime and big screen earning potential? check
Young, not-as-known actress half his age as love interest, complete with over the top use of [instant pathos creating occupation with audience] dealing with [minority group]? check
Older, well known actress as head of big government group who is tough because reasons and is a match for the protagonist but just phoning it in? check
White, european, and therefore safe bad guys? Czech
Old, acclaimed actor a few years from death apparently needing money for a pointless appearance? the saddest check of all
A total Fuck. You. ending? check plus

The relationship between Cage and Biehl feels totally one-sided and poorly executed to boot, with no real chemistry and it makes the middle of the film become a slog, bad guys come and go for plot purposes simply to let us remember there's something happening for the third act but you don't really care by then, cheap CGI and after the fact greenscreened stuff that must have been reshot because Cage might have been crazy on location that day, laughable ending.

The flash forward stuff is interesting, and how it's used works. Most of the time. Like the opening casino work/chase, meeting Biehl for the first time, that's good. It's clearly a clever idea that Guy Ritchie stole for the Sherlock Holmes movies. But by the end of the movie the flashes are cheap looking and dull for no reason compared to the future stuff. It's literally just another take, but whatever. The guy who made this directed Die Another Day, which makes everything seem to fall into place upon further reflection.

Nic Cage peaked at The Weather Man, National Treasure 2 being the only anomaly in that constant decline since.

But this movie's ending, this movie's fucking ending.....

    Saw Man from UNCLE.

Decent movie and Caville did a decent job.

A much better spy movie than Rogue Nation.

It had a chase scenes that actually contributed to the plot, the villains were actually entertaining, the fakeout triple agent thing actually made sense, the ending was satisfying. The only thing that was strange to me was the action scenes where they decided to shoot in what looked like 48 FPS for some reason. Not all action scenes did that so it made it even weirder. The 60s Cold War aesthetic was visually pleasing, and the intro to the movie introducing the history around the Cold War at the time was fun to watch.

It didn't seem like the usual Guy Ritchie style, but I've only seen Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels so eh.
