It sounds like they are going all out for the other playable characters. Took this from their latest update on kickstarter:

Mhmm, still waiting for the DLC. I also forgot this came out on PS4. How's the Kratos easter egg? Does it change the game at all or is it just an homage?
I haven't gotten there yet, I only played up until Plague Knight and Treasure Knight because the thing about having kids is when they see you playing an awesome new game they want to play it too.

Oh man, the idea of having kids play this game as if it's one of the first they play is really endearing. Like having Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combo cart for me, but instead they're playing Shovel Knight. That just seems really cool to me.
Putting him in Smash Bros never made much sense to me, though I'd hardly fight the issue.
Realizing this is possibly the form of the exclusive Nintendo content makes much more sense.
...And then I'm forced to deal with the reality of how stupid that move would be. You need the Shovel Knight amiibo to unlock the bonus stuff? Content you'll never see because you'll never be able to find one. The amiibo situation has improved only so much as it's slightly easier to find these things at launch. Miss or skip that window, and it's the same old story.

I doubt they'd paywall it . My guess is there's an alt unlock like with Mario maker.

Not really? I mean, Shovel Knight while a great imitation of more classic properties and a wonderful game in its own right, has had one multi-platform release. That doesn't scream to me "Smash Bros", as much as I'd personally like the inclusion I don't feel slighted by not having it. I'd rather see more classic overlooked characters added.
