Coming over to Melbourne a few days early this year and wondering if there is any "must do" "must eat at" that Melbournites recommend. We have been to Melbourne before but you guys are the pros and we are sure there are hidden gems we can explore. Also probably relevant for others on the forum?

Touristy you can do the Eureka Tower Skydeck for cool view, Even more touristy but more fail is the big ferris wheel in docklands.
Definitely wander into the alleys in Melbourne, very safe and many cool shops/cafes to find.
Other than that it is down to taste, state library, art gallereries, museums, sporting grounds, theatre, games laboratory is always cool to visit, there will be a games night prior to pax.
The Queen Victoria Markets are massive - and there is plenty to enjoy there (Melbourne is really great for shopping, overall), but the markets have plenty of good food and clothing, and they even offer tours. Check out www.qvm.com.au
I'll join in with others about ACMI - www.acmi.net.au - it is a great museum of moving images - including games, and it's worth a look. It has a pretty cool David Bowie exhibition up there now - but even if you aren't into that - it has plenty to offer. And ACMI is in Federation Square, which is always housing something or other, but is also home to National Gallery of Victoria (only the Australian collection, but it's still impressive).
Across the road from ACMI and NGV is St Paul'a Cathedral http://www.stpaulscathedral.org.au/, which is a beautiful cathedral and they offer tours and services.
Luna Park www.lunapark.com.au is a short tram ride away from the CBD and offers a dozen or so rides - including the famed Scenic Railway. It's small, but it's a nice little trip, and the area has a few other attractions to check out.
Dracula's Cabaret Restaurant https://draculas1-px.rtrk.com.au/ is a dinner theatre which is an institution in Melbourne - and has another one in Gold Coast. I haven't been to the Melbourne one, but I've been to the Gold Coast one three times and enjoyed it each time. The food is pretty decent, and you will enjoy the show. They are doing a retro vampire show at the moment, all 70's glamour and very kitsch.
The Tramcar Restaurant is interesting http://www.tramrestaurant.com.au/ - it takes you around the city on the tram at night. I've never been on it - but the reviews are quite good.
Crown Casino http://www.crownresorts.com.au/ is big - has some nice clubs, some restaurants, a bowling alley, and a huge gaming arcade called Galactic Circus.
Eureka Tower has a skydeck and observation area, as well as The Edge, which is a glass floored area that hangs off the edge of the building, a full 88 floors above ground level. It's not cheap, but the best viewing experience in Melbourne, if you're into it. http://www.eurekaskydeck.com.au/
There's plenty to do. The guys at the tourist info centre are really nice, and there are some good souvenirs to get from there as well. They'll help you out. As with most major cities, theres a zoo and parks and museums, I tried to steer you towards unique or outstanding Melbourne experiences.

Tram distance for sure. It is on the North East edge of the CBD grid, whereas the convention centre is on the South West edge. Trams are now free within the CBD grid area though, so definitely within range.

Cookie in the CBD on Swanson St is your best bet in terms of convenience, rotating taps and heaps of bottled.
8 bit burgers are delicious, and have a menu inspired by classic 8 bit era games.

But i would want anyone - ANYONE - to do the same as i did. I want you to LOOK down that alleyway and discover that down every single alleyway or side street, is little treasures wanting to be discovered. I want people to find these things, knowing full well that there are HUNDREDS of other places as yet, unexplored. If i give someone a ''cheat sheet'' it would feel like i would be selling the city woefully short on anything that is not on that list.
Last month i found an amazing little Japanese sweet tooth haven where they sell everything sweet that comes from anywhere in Asia. I want people to discover it for themselves, or better yet be SHOWN these little gems by a local as there is no better thing than be taken around to a local's own little favourites.
I would love to take some international visitors around the city for a few hours as i would like to see their reaction to the things i personally show them.
EDIT - If any international visitors are in Melbourne CBD during the day on Thursday and want do some exploring with me personally, since i will already be there to pick up my badges for PAX, i would be happy to show them a few spots i personally like. (Would be like 1% of the city as this city is huge)
