This is probably because I'm a nerd....but the top swoop orange stroke totally makes it look like some orange caped super hero swooped into the alley between those buildings, went around back, the swooped out across the "camera".

I really love how you use colors, they're always so vibrant.

    Thank you, Ollie.

Did my first real plein air painting yesterday.

I took on a bit more than I could chew, but fun to do.

I vote yay on this! jajaja

Really nice setting and painting mate, how did it feel to paint ala plein air?

Have some time, check out my blog

It is challenging because there's a million-and-one things distracting you, but a lot of fun to try. Will be doing more of these now that the weather's turning for the better.

Today's attempt was an old shoe.

Will take a decent picture at some point. Wet paint + sun = ridiculous glare.

I'm entirely jealous of your little set up. How long are you spending on these paintings?

  • NatriNatri Registered User regular
About an hour - hour and a half. That's as long as I can stretch it before the sun has moved the shadows completely. I know you're supposed to plot in your shadows early on and stick with them, but so far I just haven't been able to do that. So I try to get these done as quickly as I can.

Fantastic work especially given you're only on these for an hour or so. :)

Agree, back in the interiors game I could sell $300 prints of that to any number of customers a week as a go-to. Its damn fine.

Inspiring to see a natural media artist here. I've done field sketching but never plein air. I have to put that on the bucket list.

The textures in that last one are gorgeous. So chunky! but still giving the viewer a lot of detail to work with.

I'll admit it's mostly because my laptop refuses to be friends with photoshop these days.

Thought I'd share some coloursketches, one of these might turn into a bigger painting.

Have you tried a lighter weight program?
    http://jyami.tumblr.com/post/32069786567/holy-free-art-programs-batman

Maybe speedy paint/sai/sketchebook or something will work better with your laptop (depending on how old it is)

  • NatriNatri Registered User regular
Thanks for that list, Iruka! I didn't know there was such a list of alternatives. My laptop is nearly 7 years old, so I guess it's normal things run slower than they used to. I'll check out some of those other programs, I've heard about sai and manga studio. Although it might be a better idea for the future to just invest in a new machine sometime soon.

Anyways, here's what I spent my Sunday afternoon drawing.

What the heck kind of easel is that?

Painting is pretty solid for an hour, I'm sure you're only getting faster and more confident in setting up a portrait.

  • F87F87 So Say We All Registered User regular
I agree, very solid! I love your work, very inspiring! :)

    Thanks F87 and Iruka!

As for the easel, it's a new model they brought in at the local life drawing academy this year. Instead of the traditional wooden ones, this is an aluminum lightweight easel. I personally prefer the old wooden ones as they seem to be far more sturdy, but it is true that these aluminum easels weigh next to nothing so they're a lot easier to move around the atelier.

This is gonna be the biggest painting I've ever tackled on canvas. Is taking me ages too.

    testwipanspachanno15_zps4croro3m.jpg

Need to put in some more hours to pull it all together and subdue some of those bright colors.
