    - Missile weapons are for geese, energy and ballistics all the way.
    - None of that fancy jumpjet nonsense.
    - Brawling whoooo!

    Recommend a mech/build for me?

    Hunchback or Centurion

Both can take standard engines and do well with a variety of loadouts. Cheap cheap.

260 engines are workhorses in my hunches.

Heavies are always nice, the Thunderbolt is a great starter. One of the only viable IS heavies.

I will still swear by the Cicada, and the 3M is a monster with just one AC5 and 4 Medium Lasers, and the 3C and 2B are a lot of fun. The Enforcer is really starting to grow on me, even the 5P with Dual UAC5's. Embrace the dark side, and reveal your true power with the might of Jump Jets. Hunchbacks are a classic that have survived the test of time.

Zeus or Battlemasters with a huge XL drive like a medium and can pack some serious firepower with nice armor bonuses.

how do you fit enough ammo into the 3M with having 4Mlas on it?

I hadn't tried the 4J after the quirks and hahaha, this thing really does just fart out LRMs like there is no tomorrow. LRMs can be pretty useless but this is kind of hilarious.

An XL280 and some shaved armor CDA-3M. Its not a lot of ammo, but will last long enough to get work done.

Hm..I have XL270s, maybe I can rig up something for my 3M.

Woo, got $10 on paypal for some affiliate advertising stuff, so I spent it on the bare minimum amount of MC you can buy ($7 worth). So, jumpjet Cicada get! I feel like that was an ok way to spend $7.

Welp, did a few rounds in my 4J before I went to work. That was surprisingly fun and I was doing solid work with consistent 400+ damage rounds so yay for that. I feel that while bigger IS mechs may be able to shit out an absurd amount of missiles, the mobility of the medium classes makes them a lot more viable as LRM platforms since you can swiftly maneuver wherever you need to be to bring the rain down and provide MLAS support. With the proper quirks you can really ruin someone's day.

I read somewhere on the PGI forums that the math should work out to make that cicada the best jumper in the game . I didn't check their work, but that might be neat.

I don't think anything can put out missiles like the 4J.

Sure you might get more burst damage from, say, a mech with 3xLRM20

but the 4J will turn the air to missile and explosion and death with its two little launchers.

The fickle nature of target locks for indirect fire make spike > dps for lrms.

If you're direct firing the lrms, you need to answer the question "Why aren't you using lasers or gauss instead?"

The one variant of the Trebuchet that has/had LRM 15 quirks is pretty close.

even with thi supposed ECMgeddon..I've never had issue with my missiles flying high and true.

    Indirect or direct.

Only problem is indirect and not paying attention to the damage indicator. You fail to pay attention you might dump a thousand rounds into a hill side on the other side of the map where another mech has lock.

They're different versions of the same mech. Often times they'll have different hard points and different quirks encouraging specific builds. You can check Smurfy's for more specifics, but I don't know if it has the quirks availble.

If you like energy and brawling grab either a hunchback 4p for 9x medium laser goodness or the glorious and amazing and best heavy thunderbolt 5ss for all the medium pulse laser goodness. Mad wubs yo.

It's not just ecm messing with locks. Everyone running radar derp on everything and breaking locks by darting behind a lamp post is just as much of a problem as ecm.

These days I'd missiles are coming at me, there is a 90% chance that it is only possible due to a UAV. Killing the UAV stops the rain.

Again, I have to recommend the Hunchback, though if you dislike missiles, the HBK-4G and HBK-4H are amazing ballistics platforms, and the HBK-4P is an amazing laser platform. That gets you the 3 variants you need to unlock elite skills and double your basic skills. If you ever want to dabble with missiles, the HBK-4J is an amazing LRM platform, and the HBK-4SP is a great SRM platform.

If you want to throw some money at the game, the Grid Iron, is a Hero Hunchback (HBK-GI) that earns a bonus 30% C-Bills with every match you pilot it, and also is a amazballs Gauss platform.

The reason I recommend the Hunchback over the great heavies like the Jagremech or the Thunderbolt, is because the Hunchback is much cheaper, which allows you to buy them faster and get your elite pilot skills sooner, which really improve how well they drive.

The things the grid iron does with gauss are illegal in 47 states. It's absolutely the best single gauss platform and outperforms a lot of double gauss platforms just due to volume of fire. It's so good.

I think this is literally the only 50% cooldown quirk in the game outside the Locust and Huginn. But don't tell the Clans that, they might lose their illusion of all being horribly oppressed.

Hunchbacks are my favorite chassis. No contest. I have all of them and they're all wonderful.

The 4G and 4SP are my favorite brawlers in the game and the 4P is such a great hit and run platform. After the quirkening they all pilot like lights.

Note: They all have the best Buccaneer paint in the game, too--although the Catapult is also really good.

  • KonphujunKonphujun Illinois, USARegistered User regular
Hunchbacks are probably the best medium in the game outside of clan nonsense. They're fast, don't require XL engines, hit hard and have a lot of options. They're pretty much the best beginner mechs with enough wiggle room to make a veteran shine as well.

Centurions can compete, but they lose out on versatility overall and do require some specialist stuff to really shine (AC/20 modules and an XL on the Wang, for instance).

If I was making a new account today with all the knowledge I have now, I would spend my cadet and tutorial money on two hunchbacks, without question.

If I were starting over, I'd make a beeline towards the clan nonsense like a storm crow or ebon jaguar (in the near future, an Arctic cheater)

Especially with the threat of losing IS weapon quirks in the "rebalance" hanging over every IS mech like the sword of Damocles .

the 4J is nice because it can barf out as many missiles as mechs twice its size, and doesn't take up a heavy slot

I like the 4P, but lately I have kinda preferred to drive the blackjack 1DX or whatever the mla one is (need to finish eliting it still, too)

With the 4J I am generally hiding behind other mechs, low hills, etc. I make sure I'm nearby and being a massive nuisance while minimizing my exposure to incoming fire. The four MLAS on my build come into play when doing cleanup, chasing off lights, and ohshitohshitohshit moments. With bulkier mechs I do agree with the general "why LRMs" sentiment but the 4J has the right blend of stuff going on where LRMs are actually kinda fun.

Yeah, that'd be the 1X: 8 energy hardpoints, 295 max engine size...but no option for jumpjets.
