so, my housemate bought a ton of x-wing at PAX, so we've been playing games most every weekend.
Here's how the latest match went:
My squad: 5 tie fighters. Almost no augments, just pilot skills, mostly around buffing nearby allies
Housemate's squad: Blinged-out Millennium Falcon, blinged-out X wing.
First dogfight. I was new to flying this many ships at once, especially in such a tight formation. The rebels ducked into an asteroid field to hide from my Imperial might. My inexperience led to my pilots crashing into each other and splitting formation as they dodged the obstacles. Uncoordinated, my ties were easy prey for the rebel's superior firepower and shields. All five of my ships were destroyed. Both the Falcon and the X-Wing still had shields at the end. A shutout.
Second dogfight. I spend some time beforehand training my pilots for more advanced maneuvers. We met the rebel scum this time in unobstructed space. The squad kept tight formation, dodged a few shots from the Falcon and brought a full five-ship barrage down on the X-wing, destroying it in one round of combat. The Falcon caught my brave pilots as they regrouped and briefly broke up our formation; managing to take down one of my key ships and damage another with a well-placed missile. Our firepower was reduced, but the Empire marches on. With the rebel's escort destroyed, we were able to swarm the Falcon, returning its fire twice over. It took out another of my ties as we whittled down its shields, but the first blast to make it through opened a major hull breach, leading to a quick cleanup.
Another rematch seems likely.
life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies
So over the weekend I finally got around to unpacking all of my X-Wing stuff from my move.
I decided to take inventory:
Turns out I am missing 1 peg and 1 base (I inherited about 10 ships from someone else). Guess that means I need to get at least one set of colored bases/stands. Oh darn...
I also need to figure out where to store my scum ships. They've all been opened, but haven't made it out of the boxes fully yet
We've got 6 players so far, so that means we'll have around 6-8 weeks of play.
I'm thinking about posting all the matchups from the start so that people can schedule games as they have time, but still focus on a weekly list of matchups.
I played my first ever really real game of X-wing last night!
I flew a panoply of Scum vs some Rebels. He was flying a couple B-wings with a bunch of stress manipulation/use stuff and a t-70 X-wing. I flew just the stuff I have, a Kihraz, a Y-wing, a HWK-290, and a Z-95.
I felt like I handled myself pretty well even though I ran into my own ships a couple times. Finished the game with the T-70 left with one hull point. I liked the cheap Spice Runner with an Ion Turret and the Y-wing with the BTL title, they really seemed to cause him a lot of problems.

I'd say don't worry and you'll get better about this, but here we are about to start season 3 and I still do this routinely, so ... Uh ... invest in airbags?
If you have two ships with the same pilot skill, is there an official rule on which one acts first?
On opposing teams, whoever has the initiative acts first during both activation and combat phases. Initiative is determined by the player with the lower squad total. If squad points are equal, it's determined by a roll usually (check the rules on this, tournament rules are slightly different than what the base game says).
If they are on the same team, it's up to the player flying them to decide.

Yeah, I meant same team, sorry. So the second part of the question is do you have to give a permanent order to them, or can you switch it up as desired?

I have never played before and really don't yet own that many ships. I want to play, but I'm not quite sure it's a good idea yet.
Bah! Join us in the shenanigans; the worst that happens is you spend an hour (or three) bullshitting with some cool people while making pewpewlazor noises to yourself.
Besides, how are you going to get awesome if you don't play?

If money is a problem (as mine is as I was working the last seasons at minimum wage but no longer!) then buy the smaller ships off amazon as they have deals that lets you get them for 5%-20% off normal price if you look around. I've saved $51 with my ships which I guess that means it time to invest in a big ship... So far I run TIE Fighters, Bombers (rarely) and Interceptors as a 4-6 man squad and I was tied for second place last season against guys who would get 2-3 ships and stacked upgrades on one or two of them. Best part of this game is that that I've yet to feel like the new ships have outclassed me yet (my last buy was the Imperial Aces and Fel's Interceptor) as Flying skill really, really is the most important aspect. You can have all the nice missiles and special droids you want, but if I can barrel roll out of your firing arc consistently, I'm more likely to win.
The game is surprisingly tightly balanced with the sheer numbers and types of ships.
Having a smaller fleet can actually be a boon! Playing the same squad each week allows you to learn the ins and outs of your ships, strengths, weaknesses, etc. If you look at the standings from last season, I think the top 3 all ran the same squad the whole season

... though in my case it was because I kept running out of time to build a new squad in Vassal before gametime hit, so I'd end up running what I'd already built out.
As far as buying ships goes, @D0rkAngl, I use CoolStuff, Inc. Really nice folks with some serious discounts and free shipping on $100 orders (plus a loyalty program!).

I typically use Miniature Market for this stuff. X-Wing prices seem similar to exactly the same, but D&D mini booster bricks are cheaper from miniature market. I'll have to compare loyalty program details.
I'll try a few matches against Fuselage before committing.
Is there a way to put in the info on cards and pilot cards when using them, or do you need them in hand?
There isn't a way, but you can put certain stats on the ship tokens themselves.
I usually use http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build to track my own and my opponents' squads during games, because I'm not usually sitting at home with my collection as we play.

Yeah, definitely give them a try. Also try to pay attention to the hotkeys; it really speeds up play.
I encourage anyone new to X-Wing on Vassal to get it set up and play around with it a few days in advance so you make sure everything is good to go.
If anyone needs any help with anything on Vassal, @ me or send me a message. I'm sure there are others around that will be able to help too.
I love interceptors, I wish they were a bit more feasible.
ie:
5 interceptors, or 8 tie fighters (with almost twice the hitpoints and 1 more hitdie total), or 4 tie advanced's (with slightly less hitpoints but always rolls at least 2 hits and shields).
It's a pity the royal guard title isn't like the tie advanced one, and let it take the second mod for a reduced point cost.
I haven't tried it with @Fuselage yet, we've just been doing small 50pt games, but I'm thinking 4 squints, 2 aces and 2 rookies, aces with swarm tactics and all with autothrusters.
@crimsoncoyote I'm afraid my ships will have to be in the hangar for this round I'm way too busy this semester. Who knew teaching was so hard? Hopefully things will calm down in time for the next round.

Not a problem! Hope the semester goes well for you.
Speaking of league things, I'll close up signups and put up matches tomorrow!
Would you be willing to set the first week so that @Fuselage and I play each other? Gives us time to get familiar with Vassal and him time to get back home?

That'd make an excellent mobile app. The site itself seems mobile-friendly enough

You can switch it each turn
Hooray, I got something right!

There is an app version you can download, I haven't downloaded it or tried it, but it is what the web version is made from apparently.

Depending on your income level it is either the best idea or the worst idea you have ever had.

I'll do it if @Fuselage does it
Don't put that evil on me! I'd be more willing to try it once I'm back "home" with my computer and two monitors.
I was trrbl with Vassal at first, too, but you can pick it up pretty quickly once you get moving.
