This is sort of the point of those microloan places, though at the same time if you can't pay them off with their fairly bad rates you will be under their thumb forever.

If there isn't 1 person that can loan you 246, there has to be 5 people who will loan you 50. Everyone you know can't be broke as hell.

The other idea I have is to find something that will pay cash for labor on craiglist, or find one of those places that takes day laborers, which will also pay cash at the end of the day.

Some combination of those things can likely get you 250.

and I wonder about my neighbors even though I don't have them
but they're listening to every word I say

This is going to be astronomically difficult for someone in your position without a support network (family).

You're going to need to find a job with a consistent paycheck.

Also are you paying like $250 every week for this hotel? You should look into pretty much any sort of permanent residence at that rate, unless you live in NYC, I'm sure you could find an apartment that's probably the same size as that hotel room for half the price.

Craigslist man. I've taken day jobs when I need a few bucks here and there. A lot of people are willing to pony up cash to get other folks to help them load up a moving truck.

    edited, not helpful. sorry.

Yeah extended stay hotels are only cheap compared to a "regular" hotel. They're still way more expensive than actually renting an apartment. "Extended stay" is relative to the amount of time most people stay in a hotel for (3-4 nights tops)... living in one long term is throwing money away.

As an example: I moved to Kansas City a couple months ago to start a new job and stayed in an extended stay hotel for three weeks by myself until my wife could follow me from Ohio with all of our furniture and stuff and we could take possession of our new apartment. It was far cheaper than staying in a "standard" hotel for the same period of time, and while I could conceivably have found another apartment that would let me do a one-month lease and save some money I wouldn't have had any furniture in it and chances are it would have been in a nighborhood that came with a high risk of being shot. So for those three weeks the extended stay hotel was the best way to go. BUT for those three weeks staying in that shitty room, I paid about the same amount as what I pay for rent plus utilities for our 1100 sq ft apartment for an entire month.

Basically what I am saying is that there is a very narrow time window where living in an extended stay hotel makes sense. That windows is a few weeks or a couple months tops. Anything beyond that you are better off just finding an apartment, even for a short-term or month-to-month lease you are still almost certainly going to come out ahead.

Now I realize all of this is not helping you with the immediate problem of needing to come up with $250 in a hurry, but when you get through this present crisis (and you will), PLEASE look at getting out of that hotel. If you are living on a tight budget you are just making things way harder on yourself by staying there.

For your immediate problem, Craigslist sounds like a really good option for picking up some quick day labor.

That being said, given your post history, you've been trying this lifestyle for 5 years now and it doesn't seem to be working out.
I know having no family support complicates things but let's just look at the numbers.

$250 a week for a year is 13,000 dollars. An efficiency in Memphis is like 450-600 a month. That is a 50% reduction in housing expenses alone.
Working a 40 hour a week job even at minimum wage would allow you to make rent every month, put food in your mouth, and give you the opportunity to work up that career ladder until you cap out. You could still freelance in your spare time and work on whatever novel you are doing at that time.
Your current plan doesn't account for catastrophic events and is going to continue to cause you this kind of problem.

A decent first step would be to talk to the hotel manager, offer him proof you have the money coming in on December 1st see if he'll work with you in some way.

The only other angle I can think of is from some asshat with AirBnB did, that is if you've been in that hotel long enough and live in a place with some renters protections they'd probably have to formally evict you and the whole process that involves. This is MAJOR bridge burning time though and I wouldn't be shocked to find out that hotels have a special exemption from those laws. I would work really really hard to avoid this as it's will mean you will probably never be able to stay there again or anyplace else that talks to them and it will get the cops involved so they'll know you in a negative context as well.

I've been making better than full-time minimum wage these days, even taking my 'lay in bed for a week' downtime into account. I'm just paying way too much to live here--$41/day, $1230/mth. Had to get out of my aunt's place on a shorter time table than expected, because she went a little nuts after she started school again (switched over to day shift as a nurse AND started school again at the same time, I don't blame her). Now I'm paying too much to put money back for applications, deposits, and whatnot. But that's more or less solved at this point, I've stepped up on working enough that I should be out of here next month, maybe the 1st of January at the latest.

They've been way too nice to me to feel comfortable doing that to them, nevermind the practical reasons I probably shouldn't.

Your inconsistency with the job is going to cause these problems for you forever, the solution is to not have the inconsistency.

Short term, you're looking at either a minimum wage job (2 weeks to get that kind of scratch) or something on craigslist (probably still 2 weeks to get that kind of scratch).

I want you to be successful long term, like FCC said, you need to do the math here. I realize that $60/hr is great, but if you're only doing 4-5 hours a week, that kind of sucks in terms of budgeting. And plus it's super volaltile.

As for the previous situation that put you here... I understand it was kind of a shit situation, but you've got yourself into a position now where you have multiple hours a day you could be looking for a place. If you're pulling in $1000 a month (just to cover your hotel stay) then you should have no problems keeping that life style and covering catastrophic issues like this going forward.

But as for fixing this issue, I think your only real solution is talk to the owner and work something out to pay them when you get your next paycheck. Don't make a habit out of this. Once you've done this, find a cheaper place, anything, there are probably plenty of studios that allow a dog. Even if they don't say it specifically, ask if they'd be willing to take an extra $50 a month for a dog. This cuts your rent in half, and you can pocket the rest of that money the next time something like this happens to you.

edit: This was a bit much, going to slink away now. Thanks!

double edit: Okay, a bit less high strung now. I'm aware my current situation is dumb, because I'm paying way too much in rent. That is the extent of my current problem. I don't need advice on my career based on how fucked up I've been in years past, certainly not as the majority of content in the thread.

This isn't some permanent insolvable problem with my job, it's a problem with not living to my means, which are actually adequate if not superb these days. Once I'm out of here, I'll put savings back to protect me from these incidents with clients not approving in time. That's the goal! That's my intent! As soon as I'm out of this place! Next month!

Anyway, I'll work this out. I appreciate the effort and the intentions, even if some of it frustrated me--I certainly have a history which warrants 'Have you considered changing your life?' comments. But I really am doing better these days, this rent thing aside. Honest!

Yeah there's really no better option here kamar, I'm sorry :(

aside from grabbing some money from friend or family you're pretty much fucked

getting the loan is going to fuck you worse, unless you can get a bank to loan you something on colateral (that low? Probably not)

Do you have credit cards? Another option might be a cash advance. Still better than a payday loan's terms.

Outside of those I don't think any of us can help you.

I have a solution I'm working at now--I found a content mill that pays very quickly. It's garbage pay, but a solid day's work tomorrow and the next day should get me what I need. It'll be two days of suckage, but honestly I need the practice buckling down and working hard. I've done harder days before (although usually with the added excitement of 'oh man, these jobs pay well, I can clear $300 today if I keep going' to help).
