A REALLY basic Guitar Hero III Question

Okay, so GH3 on wii is the first guitar hero I've owned. So I have a really simple question. Is there a way I can find out what I need to do to unlock stuff without actually finding out what it will unlock? I'd like to keep the element of surprise in unlocking things, but I don't have any idea what I need to do.

Did that make sense?

    1) Play through the career mode in its entirety.
    2) Earn money to buy unlockables (some of which are only available after completing career).
    3) ????
    4) Profit

    Yep. But I thought my simple little question would get lost in there. Plus it seemed more directed at getting an online group together, so I started this specific thread.
