So tomorrow I'm going to go for my first x-wing night at my FLGS! My first time playing against not my friends. I imagine I will get crushed but learn a lot, and hopefully make some friends.
The best thing to do, honestly, is to just show up, find someone who has spaceships, and introduce yourself. Let people know that you're new to the scene, but you're excited about it and really looking forward to becoming a regular. I can almost guarantee that you will find some super accepting people who will bring you under their wing, introduce you to people, and play fun lists and help you learn.
There could be neckbeards (there's usually one or two), but just avoid them/tolerate them as best you can, and you'll fall in with the good guys
Good luck!
The following people are amazing and I love them: Wildcat, Timspork, Kias, Denada, susan, Sharp101, [GHSC]Ryctor, Matev, Matrias, ItBurns, Slapnuts, Dayspring, see317, and the unknown poster that sent me a box of Death Company! If you get them as Santees you should buy them amazing things!

Heh, i'm probably also headed to my first X-Wing night at a FLGS tomorrow night. Either that or a different shop over the weekend. But this will be my first time playing at all. I've done a stupid amount of reading up and playing with squad builders for a game i've never played. I still anticipate a lot of "missed it by that much" or worse when maneuvering is going in earnest though. Should be fun

I cannot stress how helpful this forum post is when describing small ship movement. Makes visualizing your moves a lot easier. Check it out and grab a few bases and movement templates to practice.

ME! This thread is the bane to my wallet and nerd porn to my mind.
Look guys, I'm really sorry to burst your bubble but the Lambda shuttle is the only ship cool enough for both the emperor of the galaxy and Han Solo to kick around in.
I can't wait for them to put the assault gunboat in, since it's basically a better, cooler-looking Lambda
No, you're thinking of the Sentinel-class landing craft.
nah
I don't know, the gun-boat (from the game, anyway) is essentially an Imperial Y-wing. It's a one person fighter with thick shields, ion cannons, warhead launchers and a hyperdrive.
I can't really see it filling the same role as a better or cooler looking Lambda (that role being "lightly armed transport").

you're arguing with 12-year-old me, bud, there's no winner here
I think my favorite might be the special forces tie/fo, honestly
asymmetrical black and red is a snazzy paint job, plus it's actually had some screen time
I can't wait for that to get a mini.
Speaking of things we'd love to see in miniature form, I saw this ship in the SE++ Star Wars thread.
Apparently it's a piece of unused concept art from TFA, and I'd love to see it hit a table.
Looks like the unholy offspring of a TIE Interceptor and a B-wing, and I wants it bad.
Just got back from my first X-wing night at my FLGS.
What a blast! I got there at 5 and just got home now at 11:30. They had a turn out of about 24 people. I played one casual game while people were still showing up. Apparently they were doing an original trilogy themed x-wing league and this was week two of it, meaning you needed to fly 80 points of things that had shown up in A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Well there I was with two original ties, three tie/fos, and a tie defender. The people playing however were super amazing and spotted me three tie miniatures and dials so I fielded a list of Howlrunner with Swarm Tactics, Backstabber, Winged Gundark, and two of the 4 PS regular tes (I was really just trying to get close to 80 points).
I went 2 and 1! First game I went up against a chewie flown falcon with 3po and some x-wing, can't remember which. At time over I had killed the x-wing and gotten the falcon down to under half for only losing a tie, so took the win on points. The second game was against 3 academies and boba fett. Despite us organizing a range one joust near the start of the game we just couldn't damage to stick. The end result of my 4 ties shooting at range 1 and 2 with howlrunner was zero damage, his return fire was 1. At the end of the game I killed two academies to losing one unnamed tie, which gave me the win but barely. Last game was against a kitted out look and Wedge. I think we did 5 straight turns of just manuvereing before shots were exchange. I just couldn't overcome wedge, his minus agility ability is BRUTAL against Ties. I did manage to get him down to one health before I lost all my ships, if I had gotten a little luckier with crits (or if he didn't have that dang integrated astromech!) maybe I could have pulled something out but oh well.
I flew my 4 ties in a miniswarm with backstabber running separate from them, starting off far away from the swarm in deployment. For whatever reason, everyone seemed to want to send their force up against just my backstabber and would set up across from him and zoom after him first turn, and I would have have backstabber hard bank and barrel roll in towards my edge of the table while the rest of my swarm went for their side. I got lots of compliments over the night on how pretty my tie formation flying was, I guess all that practice on my desk at home helped. (It also probably helped that I read up on asteroid placement theory in order to create nice channels and passages for my formation to fit through).
I had a great time, everyone was very friendly and welcoming, I'm amazed that everyone just spotted me the things I was missing. Unfortunately the guy running the league got stuck in traffic so all the games had really tight time limits but still it was really fun. Next week is 120 points and all 3 movies which I might just skip out on because there is just no way I can get 120 points going myself at this point and I'd have to borrow waaaay too much stuff. But the week after that I will definitely be there to play

Also got back from my FLGS who also had a league going on X-Wing night. It was just a general league with 100pt squadrons. Tonight, I flew:
- Keyan Farlander with Veteran Instincts, Heavy Laser Cannon, B-Wing/E2, Kyle Katarn and Sensor Jammer
- Ello Asty with Autothrusters, R2-D2 and Veteran Instincts
- Prototype Pilot with Chardaan Refit and Stealth Device
I can honestly say that Keyan is probably one of my favorite B-Wing pilots of all time. With Kyle on board, they make a great combination.
Keyan can be really mean with this setup, though, since he can consistently throw 4 dice from any range, and deny ships the Range 3 defense bonus with HLC. The B-Wing dial also becomes more open when you consider his ability, giving him the opportunity to get an extra level of defense. Even if he didn't get an opportunity to attack, opening up the next round with a critical green maneuver meant getting a focus and a target lock in would do some serious damage.
The first game was up against Miranda Doni with Twin Laser Turret, Poe Dameron with Autothrusters, R5-P9 and Veteran Instincts, and a Blue Squadron Novice (with an upgrade or two that I cannot remember now). An early bump with himself caused his squadron to up-end itself over time, but having Miranda there seemed pretty intimidating. Ello Asty was able to Tallon Roll a few times (love his ability!). Eventually, the focus-fire did her in and it was down to the two T-70's, whom didn't fare quite well in the end either. It was an experiment for him to get his T-70's on the board, and overall it was a pretty good match.
The second game was a bit interesting. This time I was pitted up against Poe Dameron with Autothrusters, R5-P9, Juke and Comm Relay, Kyle Katarn with TLT, Moldy Crow and Jan Ors, and Hobbie Klivian with R3-A2 and Integrated Astromech. Having Poe with Juke and Comm Relay was interesting, since he was able to hold on to that evade token round-after-round, all while getting to take a focus for his ability. It was an interesting synergy, but I quickly learned that Kyle was target #1 and focus-firing him would put him out quickly. I was able to get the A-Wing in position, losing Stealth Device in the process, but got it in the TLT donut hole in one swift move. The Most critical moment was when Ello had a Range 3 shot on Kyle, who had 1 hull left. Ello still had a target lock engaged on Kyle, but I had forgotten about it somehow. Managed to roll 1 hit, and Kyle's defense roll showed up completely empty-handed, which gave Ello the sniper-shot of the night. Once Kyle was off of the board, it was a matter of whittling down both Poe and Hobbie. We did not finish the game completely, but on the last round Poe did get shot off by the A-Wing. I almost forgot to use R2-D2 a couple of times...
Overall, it was a fun night. I was able to spectate some of the other matches as well for a brief moment. There was also a game of Imperial Assault as well as two Armada battles happening, so plenty of Star Wars throughout the night (of course there was Eldritch Horror in the back room as well, so technically it was a pseudo-FFG game night).
Playing last night definitely showed me that I need to figure out a storage solution asap though, just having my stuff in my starter box is not going to cut it when it comes to relocating tables and stuff.
Plano seemed to be the popular choice, though I'll probably just start off with just one tray for now, don't see a need to buy a whole tacklebox for what I own yet.

Not too big, but plenty of space for the different tokens and all. Even fits a couple large ships depending on which ones you have.
And I wouldn't hesitate going again, even if they are playing a tournament you can't field, you can play others who either are nicked out or also don't care to play in the tournament. Unless table space is an issue?

With 24 people space was a bit of an issue, well, less space and more having enough 3x3 surface areas to play on. Looks like I might be wanting to get a playmat in the near future as well.
As for that case you linked, $9.99 with prime shipping? Bought! Thanks!
I'm up to 3 planos, and my Rebel and Imperials ones can't fit anything else, I think.
My Scum box has all my pilots/upgrades, so that one's pretty close to full as well.
I was thinking about getting some of that layered foam to build custom inserts for the planos. I might be able to fit things in the planos more efficiently that way.

You might find a better method, but here's how I organized mine:
Now I've since gone and ordered a second case and split off rebels in one and imperials and IG-2000 in the other.
There's been an AWANGENING in the Force.
The REBELS and RESISTANCE are locked in an everlasting war
with the evil GALACTIC EMPIRE and FIRST ORDER.
New pilots enter the fray as readily and willingly as veterans accept their new comrades.
Meanwhile, the pilots of the
wretched hives of SCUM AND VILLAINY swarm
to cash in on the ever-growing conflict.
The fate of the galaxy rests in the commanders brave enough to fight...

ME! This thread is the bane to my wallet and nerd porn to my mind.
Lol if you think anything is cooler than an interceptor
The TIE Phantom. And I say this as a guy who flies Interceptors.
It's like a Lamborghini limo.
That flies.
Sure, but if you wanna fly casual, it's the only way to go.
No, you're thinking of the Sentinel-class landing craft.
nah
Barrel Roll -> Any 3 Move -> Boost. Thats a lot of space cleared by a ship that looks like it should have no business doing so.
Also he lets you spit bombs in the face of your enemies. Massive disrespect to bounce a Conner Net off some rebels hull.

It means don't be a jerk. We are here to have fun with our mutual hobby, so relax...and fly casual.
